West Virginia State Troopers Speak Out In Survey www.privateofficer.com

West Virginia State Troopers Speak Out In Survey http://www.privateofficer.com

StateTtroopers in West Virginia were recently surveyed by state officials and their responses were eye opening and not well received by some in the State Police command.
Nearly 70 percent of State Police Troopers don’t believe that there are enough officers in the field throughout West Virginia. Currently there are less than 500 assigned to posts throughout the state and most troopers say that is far less than their workload or minimal staffing requires.
Besides patrolling the interstate systems, State Troopers also patrol and respond to calls in many small outlying rural areas and often without immediate back-up nearby.
A new survey also found that nearly a fourth of troopers complain State Police brass impose an unofficial monthly quota for traffic warnings or citations, something that their superiors deny.
About 30 percent say they’re punished for not meeting that quota.
And more than one-fifth of those surveyed believe troopers are arbitrarily transferred or relocated as a form of discipline, though that’s against state law.
Though most of West virginia remains rural, there is an increasing number of calls for service and assistance calls from other agencies said one trooper.
At least 82 percent of the troopers responded to the survey, and the 26-question survey yielded more than 1,800 comments.
State Police officials dispute the quota allegations, and say they’re addressing the manpower issue.

LAS VEGAS NV Nov 20 2008– Police have arrested a woman’s ex-husband in connection with her shooting in the parking lot of the Gold Spike Hotel on Monday.
Metro officers said they booked Mauricio Ernesto Solano-Mejia, 24, of Las Vegas, into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of attempted murder, child endangerment, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of stolen property/firearm and violation of a temporary protective order.
The woman who was shot was identified in the police arrest report as Yeni Osorio-Solano.
Police said at about 12:35 p.m. Monday officers responded to the area of the Gold Spike Hotel at 400 E. Ogden Ave. to investigate a report that a woman had been shot
Police said the preliminary investigation revealed Osorio-Solano, her current boyfriend and an unrelated male juvenile had arrived at the City Hall Parking Garage to meet her ex-husband to pick up their 18-month-old daughter of the woman and Solano-Mejia.
The male juvenile who accompanied Osorio-Solano and her boyfriend was being babysat by Osorio-Solano, police said.
When Osorio-Solano met Solano-Mejia at the parking garage, he asked her to come to his car, which was parked nearby in the Gold Spike parking lot, in order to receive the child. Osorio-Solano did so, and while holding the child and starting to gather some clothes, an argument ensued, police said.
Police said during the argument Solano-Mejia allegedly grabbed Osorio-Solano by the throat and shot her in the left temple with a small caliber handgun. She fell to the ground, still holding their infant daughter. A passerby grabbed the child and ran into the Gold Spike Casino seeking shelter and assistance.
Two Gold Strike security officers, along with Osorio-Solano’s boyfriend, who had remained at their car with the male juvenile, restrained Solano-Mejia until Metro officers could arrive and take him into custody, police said.
Osorio-Solano remains in critical condition in an area hospital. Her daughter, who was un-injured, was transported to an area hospital for a routine check-up before she and the male juvenile were turned over to local child protective services. The male juvenile has since been released to his parents, police said.

David Fredrick Luna, 47, of Bell was arrested Thursday on suspicion of the theft and posted bail Friday.

13 Arrested in riot at Nashville High School www.privateofficer.com

Metro Nashville Police central dispatchers began receiving 911 calls from an area school and radio transmissions for help from a school resource officer assigned at the Hunters Lane Comprehensive High School and knew that it was more than a routine fight.
Police dispatched more than thirty officers to the school located at the upper end of Dickerson Pike in what metro police describe as a riot.
Thirteen students were eventually arrested and cited for disorderly conduct after police say that a massive fight broke out in the hallway during a class change, according to Metro police.
“There were about 100 students in the hallway at the same time,” said Metro police spokesman Don Aaron. “There was one fight that was broken up, and a lot of other disorderly students in pockets of other altercations … there were students throwing gang signs at each other, but we don’t know if gangs had to do with the initial pushing and shoving.”
School system spokeswoman Olivia Brown said the school was locked down for 15 minutes while the fight was contained.”It was the first incident to occur here since early in the summer,” Brown said. “In fact, incidents have been down significantly this year over last year.”Some students have reported that the disturbance started inside a freshman assembly on safe driving put on by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office. According to freshman Courtney West and her mother, Amy West, a DJ put on a song by the rapper Young Jeezy and several students started throwing out gang signs.
Aaron said in a press release that they were not fearing or expecting it to turn into a riot, but the large presence of police officers was intended to get everyone back under control.Several parents arrived at the school to pick up their children, but classes resumed and school was scheduled to end at the regular time.Charles Pitts went to the school to pick up his daughter after she called and said there was a big riot and she wanted to go home.”
I was concerned,” Pitts said. “I don’t feel too good about it.”Students leaving school early described it as a large gang fight. Police said one fight led to cheering and adrenaline-fueled students throwing up gang signs, but the disruption didn’t rise to the level of a huge fight or riot. All 13 students were taken into custody at least one of whom was female, and were transported to Juvenile Court.
Aaron said that no one was injured in the melee, although the student resource officer assigned to the school was punched while trying to get to the middle of a rowdy group.

Macy’ security officer charged in theft scam www.privateofficer.com

Macy’ security officer charged in theft scam http://www.privateofficer.com

MIAMI TWP OH Nov 20 2008 — A loss prevention officer responsible for preventing thefts at Macy’s in the Dayton Mall has been arrested for assisting shoplifters, including his sister, with stealing $10,000 worth of clothing from the store Tuesday night, Nov. 18.
John DiPietro, deputy chief of the Miami Twp. police, said the 24-year-old West Carrollton man had been working at the store since February and had duties such as monitoring surveillance cameras from the store’s security office.
The loss prevention officer intentionally looked the other way when a group of four thieves he apparently knew came into the store between 9 and 10 p.m. Tuesday and carried away $10,000 in merchandise without paying for it.
“This was a man I had worked with; somebody who was entrusted to be a loss prevention officer,” DiPietro said. “I’m very angry about this. I just hope it isn’t a sign of the times.”
Police, who were alerted to the theft by another Macy’s security employee, confronted the thieves in the parking lot and recovered the stolen goods.
DiPietro said the five people taken into custody Tuesday night had not been formally charged as of Wednesday morning, so their names were not released. The suspects face charges of felony theft and complicity to felony theft, and DiPietro said evidence in the case will be reviewed with Montgomery County Prosecutors Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning.
DiPietro said Tuesday night’s theft was discovered because a loss prevention manager who supervised the arrested loss prevention officer had suspected the man for some time and had been watching him.
DiPietro said it is extremely likely that Tuesday night’s theft was not the only time the group of thieves and their inside accomplice had stolen merchandise.
“We don’t know yet what they were doing with the clothes they stole,” he said. “We don’t know if they were connected with some kind of fencing operation. They might have been returning the clothes to other stores trying to get cash. All that will be clearer once we’ve had some time to investigate.”
In addition to the loss prevention officer from West Carrollton, police arrested four people from Dayton who they believe took merchandise from the store. They included a 28-year-old woman with a criminal record who was the loss prevention officer’s sister. The others were a 29-year-old woman and two 22-year-old men.
