Authorites reponded to the Allegiance Health after being notifed that a man had threatened someone with a firearm.
Hospital authorities locked down their Jackson hospital on Thursday after a man reported to security officers that another man had pointed a gun at him in a hospital elevator.
The man told security personnel about 4:45 p.m. he was threatened while he and the other man rode the elevator, which opens into the main lobby in the hospital at 205 N. East Ave.
Police and security officers responded to the area and locked down the hospital and began a search for the armed man said hospital spokesman Shannon Scholten.
The hospital was locked down while officers and security employees searched the hospital, looking for the man, but discovered by viewing surveillance footage the suspect had left the building immediately after he got off the elevator, Scholten said.
Police stopped a vehicle several blocks from the hospital shortly after the incident and found the man who allegedly had the gun, but officers did not arrest him at that time.
It is unclear what the two men were doing in the hospital, but it appeared the alleged threat stemmed from a family dispute, Scholten said.
Scholten said only law enforcement personnel are allowed to carry weapons into the hospital, but there are no front-door checks.
Scholten said police and security employees were unable to confirm that the man had a weapon. Jackson Police Sgt. Paul Gross said Thursday night it was unknown whether he was armed at the time and the man probably will not be charged with any offense.

Nashville officials question Wackenhut deal www.privateofficer.com

Nashville officials question Wackenhut deal http://www.privateofficer.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Nov 23 2008
wsmv.com — A private security company that is trusted to help keep Nashville safe is accused of twisting the facts in order to get the job.
Wackenhut wasn’t the lowest bidder when Metro was looking for a security company. But Wackenhut got extra points by saying it would subcontract 20 percent of its contract to a local small business, Specialized Security Consultants (SSC), run out of a house in Mount Juliet.
Wackenhut was quick to lay the blame on SSC after the Davidson County Election Commission break-in last December and blamed SSC when Metro discovered it was overbilled.
But now Metro lawyers have said the two companies really aren’t very separate.
Metro alleges that Wackenhut moved some its own guards to the SSC roster, Wackenhut did their payroll, ordered their uniforms, performed their background checks and that SSC used Wackenhut’s office space.
A contract document signed by Wackenhut’s general manager promises Wackenhut is not involved in the operation or management of its subcontractor.
“If, in fact, that’s what has happened,” said Councilman Jim Gotto, “then it was just a subsidiary of Wackenhut.”
Gotto said if Metro lawyers prove the allegations, it’s a case of deception.
“To the extent that somebody goes in and cheats, if you will, to try to gain an advantage, I think they’re doing the whole community a disservice,” Gotto said.
Metro Finance Director Rich Riebling said they’re looking at all of their options, one of which is rebidding the contract.
Because of what it calls “negligent misrepresentation,” Metro wants out of its five-year contact.
Both Wackenhut and SSC’s owner were unavailable for a comment.

An Apache Junction man had an idea of making a little extra holiday income but it has landed him in jail.
Police say that the man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing 13 remote controls from six Target stores.
Peter Maassen, 52, was booked on suspicion of shoplifting and trafficking in stolen property. Target security investigators began an investigation of the thefts and notified police for assistance.
The security investigator told police Maassen entered six Target locations in Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler and Marana from Oct. 13 through Nov. 19 and cut open packages of Universal Remote Control Units, pocketed them and left the stores without paying. The remotes were valued at $2,399.
Security cameras captured several of the thefts, and all were witnessed by loss prevention officers at the stores, according to a police report.
Police arrested Maassen Thursday evening at his home. He told them he repaired remote controls and sold them on eBay. Police found 14 Logitech Harmony remotes listed for auction on his eBay account.
After serving a search warrant on his residence, police recovered 18 of the same type of remote controls.

Security officer receives police award www.privateofficer.com

Security officer receives police award http://www.privateofficer.com

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Nov 23 2008 — A Jacksonville man was recognized by the sheriff’s office on Thursday for rushing to the aid of a woman who police said had been kidnapped and raped. Brad Barnett is being called a hero for putting his life on the line for the stranger. “I just would like to think that someone would help my family if they were in trouble,” Barnett said.
Police said it was June when Steven Wilson abducted and assaulted a woman inside her car in a Wal-Mart parking lot. They said Wilson then drove away with the victim in the car and he was going 100 mph before he crashed near Hodges Boulevard and Kernan Parkway.
That’s when Barnett, who was driving on the Southside at the time and said he saw the speeding car and the woman in the passenger seat mouth “help me” as the vehicle sped by, rushed to help after the crash. “I asked her what was going on with the driver and she said to stop him because he had just ‘kidnapped me, carjacked me, robbed me and raped me,’” Barnett said.
“I went after him and I didn’t get more than 50 feet when he pulled a razor knife out on me. He said he wasn’t going back to jail.” Barnett said he grabbed a hammer from his truck and cornered Wilson in a wooded area until police arrived. “His actions throughout this whole entire ordeal were nothing less than heroic. There are few people outside of law enforcement and the military who would have been able to react the way that Barnet did that day,” said Sheriff John Rutherford. “I wasn’t really thinking.
I just wanted to make sure that she was all right and this guy wouldn’t do this to anyone else,” Barnett said.
A security guard, Johnny Pride, was also honored by the sheriff’s office on Thursday for his crime-fighting efforts.
Police said Pride witnessed two gunmen rob a motel clerk and followed the suspects and called police to give them a description of the getaway car and the tag number, which lead to the suspects’ arrests. Story From: news4jax.com

CONSUMER WARNING; Titans Tickets could be counterfeit www.privateofficer.com

CONSUMER WARNING; Titan Tickets could be counterfeit http://www.privateofficer.com

Nashville TN Nov 23 2008
The 10–0 Tennessee Titans are the hottest ticket in town.
But officials want to make sure that excited fans don’t get burned by counterfeiters trying to cash in on the team’s winning streak.
Police will be on the lookout for bogus tickets and parking passes Sunday when the New York Jets visit sold-out LP Field. Any counterfeiter caught by plainclothes officers could face misdemeanor charges and a possible jail term of up to 11 months and 29 days.
While ticket scams haven’t been a big problem in Nashville this season, Titans officials say the threat grows as the victories add up.
“Counterfeiting occurs more frequently when it’s a big game or when the team is having a good season,” said Marty Collins, the team’s senior director of ticketing. “We certainly don’t see them every game, but when we do see them, there are usually anywhere between 20 to 80, even 100 (bogus tickets) collected.”
Problems were reported at two of the five home games this season.
About 20 unsuspecting fans told Metro police they paid $30 or more for what turned out to be bogus parking passes for the Nov. 2 game against Green Bay. And twice that many paid hundreds of dollars for counterfeit tickets to the Monday night game Oct. 27 against Indianapolis, Collins said.
As a season ticket holder, Morris Haddox of Nashville has never faced the prospect of buying a fake ticket from a street vendor. But he’s outraged just the same.
“This makes the Titans look bad and the legitimate ticket sellers look bad, said Haddox, whose North Nashville drug store is a Ticketmaster outlet. “I hope they catch whoever is doing this and that they are punished.”
Metro Police Chief Ronal Serpas and Titans Executive Vice President Don MacLachlan recommend that football fans without tickets or parking passes buy from family members or friends they know well to avoid being scammed.
Another option is to purchase tickets from Titans season ticket holders online through a ticket exchange program on the Titans Web site, Collins said.
“I urge our fans to be very careful when buying tickets or parking passes on the street from persons they don’t know,” MacLachlan said. “The organization is simply not able to honor a fake document presented to a parking attendant or ticket taker.”
Police spokesman Don Aaron said another way for fans to protect themselves is to ask to see identification from ticket sellers on the street.
“Write down their name and information,” Aaron said. “That way you’ll have some starting point for recourse.”
Titans officials confiscate the bogus tickets. Most, Collins said, are obvious fakes, done as a quick way to make a profit. Others, though, are a little trickier to spot.
Originals have watermarks
There are ways to determine whether a ticket is original. Those issued by the team have several small watermarks on the back. On the ones from Ticketmaster, a blue ribbon can be seen if the edge is torn slightly.
Collins said the parking passes contain a foil treatment embedded in the perforation, visible on both sides.
“That’s the best security feature for us,” he added. “Most counterfeiters can’t duplicate it, though some have tried.”
Counterfeit tickets and parking passes are not unique to Nashville. They appear from time to time at the home stadiums of successful teams, police said.
Aaron said the last real problem with counterfeit tickets was in December 2002. About 100 counterfeit tickets were confiscated at the sold-out Titans–Colts matchup that year. Plainclothes investigators were placed around the stadium for the playoffs in early 2003, and an arrest warrant was issued against one person for counterfeiting at that time.
The Titans have sold out every home game since 1999.

Police officer arrested after gun-waving incident www.privateofficer.com

Police officer arrested after gun-waving incident http://www.privateofficer.com

Buffalo NY NOV 23 2008
buffalonews.com
A Northeast District police officer has been charged with three counts of menacing in connection with an incident early Feb. 16 outside the Town Ballroom in the 600 block of Main Street, The Buffalo News has learned.
Officer Mitchell J. Thomas, 38, of Montcalm Street, is accused of pointing and waving a gun, Buffalo police reports said.
Thomas, suspended from duty without pay last Friday, was booked on the three charges Wednesday morning after an investigation by the department’s Professional Standards Division. He is a 10-year veteran of the force.
According to the complaints filed by the club’s manager of security and two security guards, Thomas was off duty and asked to bring his gun into the club.
“In accordance with our policy, I told Mr. Thomas that he could not bring his weapon into the club,” according to a statement to police by security guard Arthur Mangone. “[Security guard Nathan] Duerr and I explained the policy to Mr. Thomas that no patrons, not even police officers, were allowed to bring a gun into the club.”
Reports stated Thomas then asked to speak with the manager of security, Stanley Susz.
Susz stated: “Mr. Thomas insisted on being allowed to bring his gun into the club and stated that he had previously done so. I explained that there was a new owner in the past couple of years and that, per policy, no person was allowed to bring a gun into the club.”
Susz alleged that Thomas became “belligerent,” saying: “Who you gonna call? You gonna call me. I’m gonna come here, I’m gonna show up, I’m gonna come up here with some guys, and we’re gonna check everything and shut this place down.”
Then, a male and female companion with Thomas, along with two security guards, tried to escort Thomas away, according to the police reports.
At that time, it’s alleged that Thomas continued to carry on.
He, according to Susz’s complaint, then “pulled out a handgun, pointed and waved the gun at [Susz, Mangone and Duerr] and yelled.”
After several more security personnel intervened, Thomas was moved away from the club entrance, the reports stated.

A man was robbed at gunpoint of $5,000 as he walked to a bank on Chicago’s Southwest Side on Friday morning, police said.
About 11 a.m., a man in his mid-50s was walking towards the doors of a bank in the 5600 block of South Kedzie Avenue when a man he didn’t know approached him, according to a Chicago Lawn District police sergeant.
The attacker had his hand in his sweatshirt, then pulled it out and displayed a handgun. He pushed the man into some glass doors and took a black bag he was carrying, the sergeant said.
The attacker then jumped into a waiting silver Pontiac car driven by another man and got away with $5,000 cash that was in the bag, the victim’s credit cards, keys and driver’s license, according to the sergeant. Written on the bag were the words, “LaSalle Bank.”
It was not known if the man who was attacked worked for the bank but the sergeant said he was a security guard.
No one was hurt and the handgun was not fired. The attacker wore a gray hooded sweatshirt.
The two men were not in custody early Friday afternoon.
Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
