http://www.privateofficer.com/A shoplifting suspect who jumped off the second story of a parking garage to escape police Sunday died yesterday, authorities said.
Chula Vista police said officers had chased Manuel Bareno, 26, of Chula Vista into the three-story garage on F Street. They were about 15 feet away, yelling at him to stop, when he looked back at them and jumped over the side.
He hit the ground and suffered a broken leg and major head injuries. He was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where he died about 12:30 p.m. yesterday, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Police first received a call involving Bareno, a parolee, about 9:20 a.m. He allegedly battered his grandmother on Roosevelt Street, police Lt. Scott Arsenault said.
Officers were at the grandmother’s house when, 10 minutes later, employees at La Bella’s Pizza Garden on Third Avenue reported that a man had stolen two six-packs of beer and told employees he had a knife. He was seen running toward Memorial Park, and officers saw him run from there to the garage.
Arsenault said officers were told that just before Bareno went to La Bella’s, he tore up the coffee shop next door by throwing things to the floor.
