Two off-duty police officers working as security officers at an area nightclub shot and killed a man who refused to drop a gun that he allegedly fired several times in the parking lot of a Brazoria County nightclub early Saturday, authorities said.
The two off-duty Clute police officers who were working security at the Habana Night Club in the 14000 block of Highway 288 were in the process of clearing the parking lot of patrons around 2:10 a.m. when 21-year-old Kory Smith, of West Columbia allegedly displayed a small caliber handgun and discharged several rounds according to an official Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office statement.
When the officers confronted Smith and told him to drop the weapon, he ignored their commands and leveled the gun at them, authorities said.
The officers then discharged their weapons an unknown amount of times, striking Smith who was taken to Angleton Danbury Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
Smith’s body was transported to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, officials said.
The statement did not specify how many shots were fired at Smith of where he was shot.
