Coroner Becky Callihan says 32-year-old Clay Adams, chief in the small town of Nelson along the Pickens-Cherokee county line, and a female passenger were on Ga. 515 in Blue Ridge shortly after noon Monday when another driver lost control on a sheet of ice and struck Nelson’s pickup head-on and then went into and another vehicle.
Police with the Blue Ridge Police Department said Adams’ car overturned and he was ejected and killed. His female passenger is listed in critical but stable condition.
The driver of the F250 is listed in critical condition.
Another car was also involved in the accident and the driver of that vehicle was transported to Atlanta Medical Center.
Names of the injured have not yet been released.
The City of Nelson released a statement Monday evening that said, “The City of Nelson is currently mourning the loss of their Police Chief Clay Adams. It is the Cities understanding he was involved in a three car wreck in Blue Ridge, Georgia.
Chief Adams has been with the City of Nelson Police Department full time since January 2007 and has been the Police Chief since November 2007. Chief Adams will be greatly missed by all.”
Police said the accident is still under investigation. Officials said it was snowing at the time of the accident and there was snow and sleet on the road.
Nelson Mayor Bill Walker said Adams had been a good chief in the city of about 1,000 for a little more than a year and had one part-time officer.
