www.privateofficer.com An Owings Mills woman whose son jumped to his death from a 10th floor window at Mercy Hospital while in police custody is suing the Baltimore police department.
Hazella White claims in the suit filed Monday in Baltimore Circuit Court that a breakdown in protocols allowed her son, 27-year-old Damon Smith, to free himself and commit suicide.
Attorney Selig Solomon says the department’s discipline of the officers watching Smith supported White’s efforts to seek damages.
The officers have said they did nothing wrong.
The suit claims that police knew Smith was suicidal, but an officer loosened his restraints so he could go to the bathroom instead of calling medical personnel.
After Smith crashed on Interstate 795 in October 2007, a check of outstanding warrants revealed that Baltimore police were seeking Smith in connection with his former girlfriend’s death.
