Beware of the “Security Department”scam www.privateofficer.com

Beware of the “Security Department”scam http://www.privateofficer.com

Aiken SC Dec 12 2008
aikenstandard.com

Credit card holders should be wary for yet another scam out there, but this one may take even the savviest of customers off guard, police warn.

In this scam, the caller identifies himself as a security and fraud department employee who is warning you that your credit card has been flagged for an unusual purchasing pattern.
The caller will often give a phony badge number, discuss the phony purchases and then read you your credit card number, said Capt. Wendell Hall, a spokesperson for Aiken Public Safety.
The caller may have picked up the credit card number from any number of places, from a statement thrown in the trash or from online, but what the scammer really needs is the security pin number on the back of the card which many businesses require to ensure the person making the purchases has the card in-hand.
The caller will ask you if you purchased an item that you didn’t buy, telling you that your card was charged with the item.”When you say you didn’t make the purchase, the caller tells you that the security division has been monitoring a group that has been charging items ranging in price from $297 to $497, just under the $500 threshold that flags most cards,” Hall said.
The caller may even give you your address to seem more credible, the captain said, but he’s not.”Here’s the scam,” Hall said. “The caller tells you he needs to verify that you are in possession of the card and asks that you turn the card over to look for the three security numbers.”Those are the numbers they are looking for.
The caller will ask you to read the three numbers to him.The scam was uncovered inadvertently by a victim who called his credit card company back with additional information.”When he did, he realized he was taken,” Hall said.’Tis the season for scams of all kinds, but some are harder to spot than others.”This really has the potential to catch you off guard,” the captain added.
Another scam recently reported involves an Aiken man targeted in a “mystery shopper” scam.He received a $3,500 check in the mail to participate in a paid retail research program, but the resident quickly realized someone had a scam in mind.
If he had cashed the check, his banking information could have been reported back to the company that issued the check, and the victim learned that the “mystery shopper” company didn’t exist.Police said there are a number of scams on going at the moment.
Some victims are targeted online, but others are still being scammed through the mail.”You have to pay attention, especially at this time of year,” Hall said.

Mall security officers nab woman passing counterfeit money www.privateofficer.com

Mall security officers nab woman passing counterfeit money http://www.privateofficer.com

Prescott police and Gateway Mall security officers responded to a report of a woman passing funny money and security officers were able to nab the woman before she could escape from the mall.
Police arrested Sarah Ann Murabito, 22, Saturday on charges of passing counterfeit $100 bills at the Prescott Gateway Mall, said Prescott Police Lt. Ken Morley. Mall security spotted the suspect and took Murabito into custody after she used large denomination bills to make small purchases and then got real money back.
Police believe Murabito was working with a man who stayed with her at an area hotel. Police believe the two, both from Phoenix, are part of a larger organization, Morley said, and is looking for others who are involved in the scheme.

Police said that the couple passed the fake bills at least 10 times in Prescott during the past week, Morley said.

They would make small transactions buying five or ten dollars of merchandise and use the $100 bills for the purchase. Cashiers would then give them $70-$80 of “real” cash back as their change.
Investigators are still trying to locate the others that they believe are involved and ask that anyone with additional information should call the department at 778-1444.

1 Dead, 5 shot in Ohio bar chaos www.privateofficer.com

1 Dead, 5 shot in Ohio bar chaos http://www.privateofficer.com

TROTWOOD OH Dec 12 2008
daytondailynews.com — One of six people shot at a Trotwood bar early Friday has died.
David Watson, 21, of Dayton was seriously injured in the shooting inside Higgins Station, 420 E. Main St., about 2:12 a.m. Friday. Watson was one of four men and two women who were shot after several fights broke out inside the bar.
Trotwood Police Sgt. John Porter said more than 100 people fled the packed bar after shots rang out. The gunman fired 10 to 15 rounds.
“We know it started with some type of argument,” Sgt. Fred Beck said. The bar was holding an weekly Ladies Night, he said. “It’s one of their busier nights,” he said.
Trotwood police received several calls from people at the scene right after the shooting, Porter said. A Trotwood police officer who had been sitting in his car in a parking lot across from the bar called in for mutual aid assistance after seeing the bar patrons rush out. “We try to be at bars at closing time so the closings are peaceful,” Beck said.
Help responded from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Dayton Police, and other surrounding agencies, Porter said.
Three of the six victims were removed from the scene to Good Samaritan and Miami Valley Hospital by Trotwood medics and three others were removed to the hospitals by family or friends, Porter said.
As of 10:30 a.m., three of the victims had been released from the hospital, Beck said.
It’s not clear whether the victims and the shooter knew or were related to one another, Porter said.
Beck said investigators recovered at least eight .380-caliber shell casings from the scene, likely fired from a semi-automatic pistol.
So far police have not identified the shooting suspect, he said, though they do have a description of him from eye witnesses. He’s described as a light-skinned black male of thin build, between 25 and 30 years old, clean shaven, with a mole on the left side of his face.
Porter said he was described as wearing blue jeans, a red T-shirt, a black puffy coat, a Cincinnati Reds ball cap and red Nike Air Force One shoes.
It’s not clear how he fled the club area, whether on foot or in a car, he said. Beck said detectives were running down leads.
“Because of the chaos at the scene, we were not able to get a lot of eye witness reports,” he said. “People just scattered and ran. “
“We are not getting a lot of cooperation from the witnesses or victims,” Beck said. “There was security, a bouncer at the door, patting down people. We’re trying to find out how the gun got in.”
Bartender Lori Taylor said the shooter was not a regular. “It was only the second time I’ve seen him,” she said. Taylor said three of the victims were regulars at Higgins Station, a place she said she considers home.
“Of all the places I’ve worked, this is the safest. Our regulars know each other and each others’ family, We all laugh and joke around,” said Taylor, who has bartended at nearly a dozen Dayton-area watering holes.
Taylor said the shooting began when security started urging people out of the bar as it prepared to close. She said a scuffle broke out, then escalated. She was on the phone to police when shots were fired.
“We had six security people and three bartenders here,” owner Luke Gosnell said. “We wand and pat people down at the door. But some folks will hide things in their shoes or places you’d never think of.”
“We are a quiet little neighborhood bar — a Cheers. I guess this can happen to anybody,” said Gosnell, who has owned the bar for 10 years.
According to Beck, there have been sporadic calls for police to the bar: a fight in October 2007, gunfire in August 2007 and gunfire again in December 2006.
The shooting is still under investigation. They’re hoping other eyewitnesses will come forward with information to help identify the shooter. Anyone with information can call the detective department at 854-3988.

Security guard arrested after stabbing apartment resident www.privateofficer.com

Security guard arrested after stabbing apartment resident http://www.privateofficer.com

ANTIOCH CA DEC 12 2008 — A security guard at an Antioch apartment complex was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of fighting with and then stabbing one of the residents he was charged with protecting, police said.
Antioch police say the private security guard, Kendall Small, 37, of Oakland, has a criminal history that includes arrests on suspicion of drug possession, auto theft, weapons offenses, assault with a deadly weapon and battery.
The stabbing is believed to have occurred about 10:20 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 3900 block of Delta Fair Boulevard. Antioch police Sgt. Diane Aguinaga said Small admitted to getting into a fight with the 38-year-old resident, but denies that he stabbed him. A weapon has not been recovered by police.
The resident, who discovered he had been stabbed twice in the stomach only after he got home from the fight, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. He is expected to survive.
According to police, the fight started when the victim heard his car alarm go off and went outside to find Small nearby. They got into an argument, which led to an exchange of blows. Aguinaga said residents suspected the guard of tampering with their cars in the past, which may have led the victim to confront him.
Police say Small is employed by an Oakland-based security company called Silent Partner Services, which contracted with the apartment complex. Attempts to reach the security company and the complex manager were unsuccessful.
Aguinaga said private security guards are not allowed to carry firearms. They must obey the same statutes as other people for carrying knives — they must not be concealed, cannot have a blade longer than 2 inches and cannot be released with a switch or flick of the wrist.
Small was booked into County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He was held on $30,000 bail.
Russ Heimerich, a spokesman for the state Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau of Security and Investigative Services — which licenses alarm and private security companies — said if the allegations prove true, the guard and his employer could face licensing sanctions or revocation.
Brian Livingston, a two-year resident of the complex and friend of the victim, said he was startled by the stabbing but said that even with security guards present, residents have to rely on themselves for safety.
“You’re pretty much on your own,” Livingston said. “I watch for myself, for my neighbors, and hopefully they watch over me.”

Teen bank robber killed by police www.privateofficer.com

Teen bank robber killed by police http://www.privateofficer.com

MCLEAN, Va. Dec 12 2008
foxnews.com – Police say the person who robbed a McLean bank on Wednesday was a teenager from Arlington.

Investigators say the 19-year-old suspect, Hailu Brook, went to Yorktown High School.

Police say that around noon on Wednesday, Fairfax Police were called to the BB&T Bank on Old Dominion Drive in McLean for a bank robbery. Officers were alerted to a crash at Old Dominion Drive and Valley Wood Road, not far away in Arlington. According to police, the suspect ran from the scene when police caught up with him, and when he showed a gun, officers opened fire, killing him.

Students are in disbelief that Brook was the person police shot and killed on Wednesday after he robbed the bank. His friends noticed he wasn’t in class on Wednesday or Thursday, but word spread throughout the day that he was the person behind the robbery and chase through nearby neighborhoods.

Brook had been a student at Yorktown High for the last three months, and he was a junior.

“Today in my math class, someone went online and figured out that it was him,” said Virginia Shutler, a fellow Yorktown student.

“All my friends today were so upset,” said Hannah Adams, another student. “He was in a lot of our classes. I have a couple friends that had him in photo class, and they all say he was the nicest guy ever.”

Lucy Sgroi sat next to Brook in one of her classes, and she says she considered him a friend.

“He told me that he wanted to go to GW University and that he wanted to be a diplomat for the United States,” said Sgroi.

“He was very nice, always said hi to everybody,” said Nick Gunn, another Yorktown student. “Didn’t have a problem with anybody.”

Brook had family members living in both McLean and Arlington. All of them were too distraught to talk about their death of their loved one on Thursday.

Oregon attorney issues officer second ticket http://www.privateofficer.com

PORTLAND, OR Dec 12 2008 – A Portland lawyer who successfully cited a police officer for parking his patrol car in a no-parking zone during lunch says the officer violated the rules again.

Attorney Eric Bryant says he spotted a patrol car parked in a “Government Vehicles Prohibited” zone alongside the downtown Justice Center last month and traced it to Officer Chadd Stensgaard, who was fined $35 last spring.

Bryant says he also gathered enough evidence at the scene to cite Multnomah County Sheriff’s Lt. David Rader for parking his vehicle in the same zone. Bryant has filed complaints against Stensgaard and Rader.

Sgt. Brian Schmautz of the Portland Police Bureau says a long-standing informal agreement police have with the city allows officers to park wherever needed while on duty. The agreement is expected to be put in writing.

Martha Vineyard teacher arrested for “hosting” underage parties www.privateofficer.com

Martha Vineyard teacher arrested for “hosting” underage parties http://www.privateofficer.com

West Tisbury MA. Dec 12 2008
vineyardgazette
A West Tisbury school teacher was arrested on Tuesday amid charges that he provided alcohol and pornographic materials to minors and hosted underage parties at his Vineyard Haven home.

Daniel K. Johnson, 43, was arrested by Tisbury police at his home on Mariner’s Road and charged with five counts of furnishing alcohol to minors, one count of assault and battery and two counts of dissemination of obscenities to minors. Police also confiscated a personal computer from Mr. Johnson’s home.

He was arraigned in Edgartown district court on Wednesday where he entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. He was released on $5,000 bail.

A police incident report requested by the Gazette, with the names of victims and other personal information redacted, states that a parent went to the Tisbury police station on Dec. 1 to report concerns that his teenage son might be receiving alcohol from an adult.

The nine-page report by officer Daniel Hanavan said the father found his son with a bottle of 100-proof vodka; the father subsequently took the bottle to an Island package store and asked who purchased it. An employee checked the UPC scanning code on the bottle and determined the time and date the bottle was purchased.

During a review of the store’s security video, the father recognized the person on the tape as Mr. Johnson, an industrial arts teacher at the West Tisbury elementary school.

The father then went to Mr. Johnson’s home and spoke to him about his teenage son, a former West Tisbury school student who is now a student at the high school. Mr. Johnson reportedly denied buying the alcohol for the student, and said the boy took the bottle from his truck.

The police report includes an account from a parent who became concerned after her son provided inconsistent information about where he was spending the night on several occasions.

The mother said she spotted her son driving with Mr. Johnson and pulled the vehicle over, telling her son to get into her car. Mr. Johnson then reportedly followed them to a West Tisbury home and came inside to talk. Mr. Johnson, who according to the report had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, told the parents he brought their son to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at a downtown church earlier that day.

The police report also contains an account of a parent who confronted Mr. Johnson, to which Mr. Johnson reportedly replied: “I’m really sorry that this got out of hand and went this far.” The parent then contacted the West Tisbury school and the Vineyard schools superintendent’s office.

The report details numerous interviews with students who said Mr. Johnson routinely purchased alcohol for them and hosted parties at his home attended by underage people, sometimes playing beer drinking games on a table the teacher built in his basement.

The report indicates Mr. Johnson provided his cell phone number to students so they could call him to purchase alcohol.

The report also indicates that Mr. Johnson showed pornographic films and offered to perform sex acts on students.

Mr. Johnson also worked as an emergency medical technician with the Tri-town squad up-Island. He reportedly has been placed on leave from his duties pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Tisbury police chief John Cashin said the investigation is ongoing. He encouraged any other students or parents with information to come forward and talk with school or police officials.

Chief Cashin said investigators are analyzing the computer material seized from Mr. Johnson’s house, and he said additional charges could be filed. He praised the students who provided information to investigators.

“These young people who came forward were very courageous to do so. They opened themselves to a lot of scrutiny and deserve credit for their bravery . . . I am sure it was not easy,” he said.

The chief also praised the police work of Officer Hanavan.

Vineyard schools superintendent James K. Weiss confirmed yesterday that Mr. Johnson had been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal school investigation. He said Mr. Johnson has worked at the West Tisbury school since 2001 and is currently a half-time teacher with professional status.

Mr. Weiss said school officials had heard rumors of inappropriate behavior involving Mr. Johnson prior to his arrest. The superintendent said he had a meeting with Mr. Johnson on Monday, the day before his arrest, to give him an opportunity to state his side of the case.

“He denied any involvement at all to me. Then we heard from the police,” Mr. Weiss said.

Following the arrest, West Tisbury principal Michael A. Halt talked to students in grades 4 through 8 about the matter. A letter was also sent home to parents explaining the situation.

Mr. Weiss said he plans to discuss the incident with the staff to emphasize the importance of boundaries between students and teachers to prevent future problems.

“A vast majority of those people — maybe 99.99 percent — are doing a fantastic job and are deserving of the trust we place in them. I hope people do not lose sight of that,” he said.
