A former employee of a local church who was charged with theft of funds appeared in court this week to answer to the charges.
Thirty-one-year-old Kimberly Ann Childers is charged with breach of trust of more than five-thousand-dollars in a recent theft case involving her employment with a local church.
Authorities noted that the wife of a South Carolina State Trooper is alleged to have embezzled more then one hundred and eighty five thousand dollars from the church and this week she faced a judge.
Childers worked as a financial assistant at Summerville Presbyterian Church on South Laurel Street for seven years.
According to court documents, between January 2nd and November 25th of this year, Childers transferred more than one hundred and eighty five thousand dollars from the church’s account into her own bank accounts. Investigators who were called in by church officials said that Childers was entrusted with the accounts of the church as part of her employment responsibilities.
Police said that Mrs. Childers does have a prior conviction for financial crimes and these are very serious charges. According to court records, Childers also told police she has taken money from the church since 2007. In 2000, Childers was convicted for stealing money from a bank, and received five years probation for that crime. Judge Tom Finucan said, “I’m going to take into consideration that you’ve been down this road before. I’m amazed that you’re sitting here today. I hope you’re not guilty, but if you are guilty, then you must suffer the consequences of your actions. “
Detective Sgt. Cassandra Williams with the Summerville Police Department says the church did not know about Childers’ previous conviction. She says, “People do seek churches as a place of refuge, and knowing they have been violated, I can’t imagine how someone would feel at this moment. “
Jeff Bowers who serves as the lay leader for the Summerville Presbyterian Church released a statement, “We are saddened that this has happened and are in prayer for Kimberly and her family…. We are a Christ-centered church which values an open and friendly congregation. This incident will not change the mission of our church. “
Because of the prior criminal activities of Childers and the substantial amount of the thefts in this case, Assistant solicitor Jean Popowski told a judge in court, “The state in this case is asking for a substantial surety bond
The judge agreed and set bond at two hundred thousand-dollars.
Police say this is an ongoing investigation. If convicted, Childers faces 10 years in prison, she would also have to pay restitution, and court costs. Childers is scheduled to return to court January 12th in Dorchester County.
There was no word if Childers had made her bond or was still incarcerated at the county detention center.

Bomb explodes inside bank, 1 dead http://www.privateofficer.com
A spokesman for the Oregon State Police, Lt. Gregg Hastings, said three officers were seriously injured in the explosion. But he said he would not discuss whether there had been fatalities. “We are not ready to address that question at this time,” he said
“We are only confirming serious injuries to three officers,” he said at the scene.
He said two of the officers were with the Woodburn police department and the other was with the state police bomb squad.
Marion County deputy medical examiner Rodge Womack said he had been told of at least one fatality. He said he did not know the identity of the victim.
Bank President and CEO Bob Sznewajs told The Associated Press that some bank employees might have been injured by flying glass but that none was seriously hurt.
Before the detonation, a Wells Fargo Bank branch nearby got a call that was “a potential bomb threat” but police searched and found nothing, Sznewajs told The AP.
He said his bank then got a call “from an unknown person saying that we should look for one as well. We called authorities, but they looked and found nothing.”
Sznewajs said one employee saw a device in the bushes near the bank and called the authorities. “We looked at it and evacuated the branch and sent people away,” he said.
Authorities decided to move the device inside the branch, apparently scanned it, and then it went off, he said.
Sznewajs said he did not know if the bomb went off on its own or as a result of the technicians’ investigation.
The CEO said he knew of no previous threats against the bank, which employs 3-5 people.
The branch normally closes at 6 p.m., but closed early Friday after the threat.
Late Friday night, federal agents were talking with security people at the bank about any information they may have, Sznewajs said.
Woodburn is an agricultural town south of Portland.

azfamily.com — Two suspects are in custody and two more are on the loose after an early morning robbery at a Phoenix Wal-Mart.
It happened Thursday at 51st Avenue and Indian School Road.
Police said eight people pulled up to the store in Chevy Tahoe. Four went inside the store while the others waited in the vehicle.
Police said two of the people started shoplifting while the other two surrounded the customers, held them at knifepoint and robbed them. One of the suspects allegedly groped a female customer, as well, investigators said.
All four suspects ran out of the Wal-Mart and jumped into the waiting SUV.
When a security guard confronted the suspects, police said the men jumped out of the vehicle and started swinging bats at him.
A helicopter search spotted several of the men getting out of the SUV in a nearby neighborhood.
Police caught up with those six people and interviewed them.
After a time, victims and witnesses identified two of the people as being involved in the crimes inside the store, said Sgt. Michelle Thiry of the Phoenix Police Department.
Those two people were taken into custody. The other two suspects from inside the store are still on the loose.
No information about those other suspects was immediately available.
No serious injuries were reported.

Gainesville police arrested a Wal-Mart employee earlier this week after she was accused of stealing hundreds of dollars from the business.
Regina Lang, 36, of Gainesville, is facing theft and fraud charges after police alleged she stole more than $2,000 from Wal-Mart off of Waldo Road, police reported. She was booked into the Alachua County jail on Wednesday and later released.
Lang undercharged friends who purchased merchandise from the store and was taking cash from a store register, according to police. A surveillance video showed what was occurring. Police said money turned up missing on at least 25 occasions.
The thefts started in mid-October and continued until Lang’s arrest, according to police.
Questioned by officers, Lang later admitted to the theft, said police spokeswoman Officer Summer Hallett.
Earlier this week police arrested another Wal-Mart employee, alleging she was involved in a gift card scheme to steal from the store.

Authorities investigating embezzlement from the school district have now charged a former Woodland Park School District employee with the theft.
Police said that Deanna Moore turned herself in to authorities Friday after being at the center of the ongoing embezzlement case.
The school’s supervisor of finance, Moore, 60, came to light when police were informed of a substantial amount of funds missing from the school district bank accounts.
Woodland Park School District officials say they first realized more than $400,000 was missing and assumed it had been stolen.
Moore was fired by the district and was formally arrested and charged Friday.
She was being held at the county detention center pending a bond hearing.

Retired NC police officer charged with shoplifting, assault http://www.privateofficer.com
wcnc.com — A retired Concord police officer is accused of stealing $900 worth of clothing and jewelry from a Kohl’s department store.
The retired officer agreed to speak exclusively with NewsChannel 36 on Thursday under the condition that we not record her face.
She said she is disgraced by what she did and doesn’t expect any special treatment from the justice system.
We spoke with a remorseful Janine Gebhardt at her home.
“In a million years I would never have thought I’d have done something like this,” she said.
Police say Gebhardt walked into Kohl’s with an empty handbag. But when she paid for a few items and left the store, that handbag was then bulging.
“I’m willing to admit that I did something wrong,” Gebhardt said.
When she got back to her car, she explains that a loss prevention officer asked to see her handbag.
“I said, ‘No, you have no right. Why do you want to see my pocket book?’ And we started fighting over it,” she said.
After a short scuffle, Gebhardt says she pulled out her retired Concord Police Department badge.
“I said, ‘No, don’t. I’m a retired police officer. I’m not going to cause you any more problems, I promise,’” Gebhardt said.
In her handbag, police found $900 worth of stolen watches, clothing, and earrings. She was arrested and charged with larceny and assault.
She says she has prayed for forgiveness ever since.
“I’ve just disgraced myself … my family, the police department, the whole police profession,” Gebhardt said.
Officers with the Concord Police Department say Gebhardt was allowed to keep her badge when she retired several years ago. They say that is a fairly common practice among departments.
Gebhardt says she wishes she never showed the badge that day.
