Hospital security thwarts baby kidnapping, nabs suspect http://www.privateofficer.com
Police said that a woman attempted to kidnap a newborn baby from the hospital but was stopped by security officers.
According to Kristin Mumford with Metro Police, a woman dressed in the appropriate hospital attire entered a new mother’s room where a newborn baby was rooming in with the mother.
At that point, police said that Johnson tried to leave the hospital with the baby, but hospital security measures caused the alarms to go off and security officers responded and through their investigation realized what was happening. The officers took Johnson into custody and notified police.
Johnson, a Nashville resident, was free on a $2,000 bond after being accused of stealing a baby rocker at a Wal-Mart on Charlotte Pike on Dec. 29 and then attempting to return it for cash.
Police said they are looking for a red Chevrolet Impala because the woman may have had an accomplice who was going to help them escape.

NYC Security officer arrested for taking bribes http://www.privateofficer.com
The payoffs of up to $60 were allegedly exchanged for moving individuals up on a waiting list for home contractors required to register with the Department of Buildings.
Carroll Henry, 56, of Brooklyn, was charged with receiving reward for official misconduct, a class E felony punishable by up to four years incarceration, and receiving unlawful gratuities, a class A misdemeanor punishable by one year in prison.
“A corrupt gatekeeper, ready to manipulate a waiting list at a city licensing office for cash, as charged here, sends the worst message imaginable to contractors just being introduced to city regulation,” said Department of Investigations Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn. “This arrest lets everyone know that it is a crime that will result in arrest and a possible prison sentence.”
Henry was a security guard for Allied Barton International and was assigned as a security guard at the DOB’s Licensing Division in Manhattan.
According to the criminal complaint, Henry maintained a list of individuals seeking to speak with DOB clerks at the Licensing Division office. Everyone was supposed to be listed on a first-come, first-served basis.
However, the investigation found that for more than a month Henry was accepting cash payments for placing individuals at the head of the list, bypassing others, and that he gave out his telephone number to enable prospective customers to call ahead and be placed at the front of the line.
On one particular day, Henry reportedly acknowledged that he had already collected $100, according to the complaint.

Trespasser pulls shotgun on security officers http://www.privateofficer.com
Gainesville police arrested a Newberry man for armed trespassing early Wednesday after security officers at a local apartment complex said he reached for a shotgun after he was told him to leave the premises.
Brandon Arredondo, 20, was being held at the Alachua County jail on charges of armed trespassing and leaving the scene of an accident with damage, jail records showed.
Security officers at Cabana Beach Apartments off of SW 51st Terrace told police Arredondo drove into the complex overnight at a high rate of speed, said Lt. Steve Weaver. He was told to leave the complex but instead drove to another location at Cabana Beach. When the security officers again spotted him, they went to again order that he leave the premises.
Weaver said the security officers reported Arredondo reached for a shotgun in the pickup he was driving. As he did a shotgun shell rolled out of the front seat.
The security officers backed away as Arredondo got back in the pickup and drove away, hitting a car as he left the complex.
Officer Joseph Register spotted the pickup and stopped Arredondo, Weaver said. Police found the shotgun and several shells inside the vehicle. Arredondo was taken into custody.

Target store employee arrested after “unauthorized donations” www.privateofficer.com
Target store employee arrested after “unauthorized donations” http://www.privateofficer.com
news-press.com
An employee of a Super Target store in Cape Coral recently donated items such as meat, a laptop computer, video games, Halloween costumes, holiday decorations and wine to a local wildlife sanctuary
The problem? Cape Coral Police say Target management never authorized the donations to the Octagon Wildlife Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Center in Punta Gorda.
For her alleged generosity at the store’s expense, police arrested the employee, Leeann Wesley, 47, of Cape Coral, on 11 counts of grand theft Monday. She was released after paying $16,500 bail.
Wesley is accused of giving away the 619 items, which totalled $10,822, from the Pine Island Road store on Oct. 13 through Dec. 22. She did not return phone calls for comment, but she did tell police that the incident was just a mistake.
Target had been donating discarded merchandise such as meat and plants to Octagon long before Wesley started working in the store’s receiving department in October, according to Target store theft investigators.
Wesley regularly boxed up items that were picked up on Mondays by Octagon, reports state. Although she was authorized to donate some items to Octagon, she was not allowed to give certain merchandise to the organization, the investigators told police.
Store security cameras filmed Wesley taking the merchandise, reports state. Wesley marked items as damaged even though they were in full working order, police reports state. Wesley said if one item in a box was damaged, she would mark the whole box as containing damaged goods without checking each item, reports state.
Laurie Caron, manager of Octagon, said she had no idea the items weren’t authorized, according to her attorney, Kevin Shirley.
Octagon is a nonprofit organization that cares for exotic animals, and it depends on donations from businesses and private individuals, Shirley said.
“They go through 500 pounds of meat a day to feed the animals,” Shirley said.
The items, Shirley said, were boxed and picked up by Octagon. Caron never got a laptop computer, video games, wine or Halloween costumes from Target, Shirley said.
“We are actively cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation of this matter,” said Kate Gillen, a spokeswoman for the Target store chain.

Nurse takes gun away from angry hospital visitor www.privateofficer.com
Nurse takes gun away from angry hospital visitor http://www.privateofficer.com
tbay.com — The quick action of a nurse at Mease-Dunedin Hospital defused what could have been a deadly situation in the hospital’s critical care unit Monday afternoon.
Cindy Shaw, the nurse, took a loaded gun from Paul Shein after he became “angry and belligerent,” according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Shein, 74, a patient in the hospital’s critical care unit, pointed the gun at another nurse who was in the room, deputies said. The other nurse was not identified.
“I was concerned for the safety of the other nurse in the room and myself,” Shaw said in an e-mail statement from the hospital. “I am so grateful I was able to act quickly.”
Shein, of 710 Roanoke Ave. in Dunedin, was placed under arrest by Pinellas County sheriff’s deputies on attempted murder charges. He remained hospitalized Tuesday. Shein will be booked into the Pinellas County Jail when doctors say he is ready to leave.
Details of Shein’s medical condition were not released.
The incident happened at 5:07 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said.
“He had become angry and belligerent towards the staff,” said Cecilia Barreda, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.
Barreda said Shein’s bed was in a general area of the critical care unit, though she could not immediately say whether the bed was secluded from other patients.
When deputies arrived, hospital security had detained Shein.
Guns are prohibited on hospital property, said Beth Hardy, a hospital spokeswoman. But she said officials at Mease-Dunedin are reviewing their policies and procedures. Hardy said one avenue is to look at other hospitals for guidance and examples.
“First thing this morning, we started investigating the situation and also taking a very serious look at policy and procedures and determining where there might be opportunities for improvement,” Hardy said.
“We do consider this unusual; however, we are taking it very serious.”

NTL. ASSOC. PRIVATE OFFICERS
http://www.privateofficer.com/– A Wal-Mart employee allegedly stole nearly $39,000 from a store here, police said.
The details of the alleged theft were unclear, but police said the employee, 33-year-old Gladys L. Segers, allegedly had been stealing money through return transactions. Police said it was also unclear how long the thefts had been occurring, but it is alleged they have been going on for at least the past year.
Segers, of the 900 block of East Pine Street, was charged with one count of theft by unlawful taking.
Segers was arrested at her home Monday night, police said.
Authorities allege Segers stole a total of at least $38,995 from the North 2nd Street store.
Police did not release additional details about the theft on Tuesday.
Contacted by telephone at her home late Tuesday afternoon, Segers declined comment, except to say she has hired an attorney.
Dan Fogleman, a Wal-Mart spokesman, would only say the company is cooperating with police in the investigation, “and any comment, really, would be best served coming from them.”

Police arrest two woman after running over security agent www.privateofficer.com
Police arrest two woman after running over security agent http://www.privateofficer.com
Police surrounded a Phoenix home Tuesday where two women hid after they allegedly shoplifted at a Walmart and then hit a store employee with their car as they left the parking lot, Phoenix police said.
Catrina Cheatham, 33, and Kristina Miles, 29, were seen by an employee pushing a shopping cart out the front door of the store near 35th and Southern avenues without paying for the items inside.
They quickly got into their car after loading the stolen items and backed into a security guard as he pulled an elderly woman out of the way, said Jon Howard, a Phoenix police officer.
When Cheatham, the driver, failed to pull over for police, they tracked the license plate to a residence at 23rd Avenue and Baseline Road where both women went inside, police said.
They surrendered and were arrested after a brief standoff with police.
Miles was booked on suspicion of one count of shoplifting and an unrelated warrant, a minor offense.
Cheatham were booked on suspicion of one count of aggravated assault and two counts of unlawful flights from a police officer, both serious felonies that could keep her in jail for at least a year, Howard said. She was also booked on suspicion of one count of shoplifting.
Police said they do not know if the women were on drugs at the time.
The security guard had no major injuries and refused medical care.
