Suicides in our National Parks increasing http://www.privateofficer.com
SALT LAKE CITY Utah Jan 5 2009 AP— Freshly unemployed, former business executive Bruce J. Colburn flew to the far northwest corner of Montana in search of a place to die.
In early October, he paid a hotel clerk to drive him into Glacier National Park. He spent the night in a campground and then made his way on foot to a valley between two deep glacial lakes. On a forested slope not far from the trail, he shot himself in the chest with a handgun, according to park officials.
Although his motivation remains unclear, investigators found evidence on a computer that the 53-year-old Reading, Pa., resident had searched for information about suicide in Glacier park, according to Patrick Suddath, branch chief of ranger operations at Glacier.
“He clearly intended to come here for that purpose,” said Suddath, who led an extensive search after the man was reported missing.
Colburn was one of at least 33 people who chose to end their lives last year in a national park. The number is higher than recent years, although the National Park Service hasn’t consistently tracked suicides.
“It’s some place where, toward the end of someone’s life, when they’re feeling a total sense of despondency, they want to return to a place of natural beauty … for their final moments,” Suddath said.
Park officials estimate people made more than 274 million visits to the country’s 391 national park units last year. The vast majority are intent on seeing breathtaking vistas, wildlife in its natural habitat or places where history was made, such as the Gettysburg battlefield. A troubled few came to end their lives. Among them:
_ A 46-year-old carpenter with cancer climbed into a canoe and vanished in Everglades National Park.
_ A 49-year-old builder blamed the economy in a note he left for his ex-wife and attorney before killing himself at the edge of the woods at Georgia’s Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.
_ A 65-year-old university biology professor disappeared into Utah’s Canyonlands National Park, telling relatives in a note he was returning “body and soul to nature.”
_ A 70-year-old woman left a suicide note in the trunk of her car at Arizona’s Saguaro National Park before killing herself about a half-mile from a trailhead.
_ Three people, in separate cases, jumped off a towering bridge at West Virginia’s New River Gorge National River.
In 2007, there were 26 suicides or probable suicides in the parks. Park Service search-and-rescue records — which are likely incomplete — show 18 suicides in 2006, 18 in 2005 and 16 in 2004.
More suicides occur in Grand Canyon than any other park in recent years. The park averages two a year. There were three in 2008.
Suicides have been on the rise in some places like Colorado National Monument, where 26 people attempted suicide last year. Two were successful, including a 21-year-old man who hanged himself from a juniper tree near Cold Shivers Point in July.
The numbers there are partly a reflection of nearby Mesa County, where the suicide rate is roughly twice the national average, said Joan Anzelmo, the monument’s superintendent. But it’s also a testament to people’s connections with national parks, places they go to hike, escape urban life and even get married.
“They come here in the happiest of times and unfortunately some choose to come in the saddest time of their lives,” Anzelmo said.
Suicides can take a toll emotionally on rangers and financially for agencies that are part of search-and-recovery operations. After Colburn went missing in Glacier, as many as 40 people from various agencies looked for him. Recovering bodies or cars that go over cliffs can be dangerous as well as expensive.
Most law enforcement rangers in national parks are also trained in emergency medicine, which includes strategies in dealing with people in crisis. Some park employees are taught to keep an eye out for notes taped to steering wheels and at least one park, Colorado National Monument, has contemplated closing certain areas at night.
Several suicides are prevented by rangers each year, but it would be impossible to stop them all.
“I think anybody that does the kind of work that we do would like to offer hope to anybody that’s at that point of despair in their life,” said Lane Baker, the Park Service’s chief of law enforcement, security and emergency services. “But I’m not sure we can do anything to change that.”

STOCKTON CA Jan 5 2009 – Two teenagers were arrested after a Friday night fracas near the downtown theater in which a security guard contradicted the orders of police responding to the chaos, the Stockton Police Department reported.
According to police, around 8:30 p.m. Friday a 15-year-old boy was attacked in a fight at Dean De Carli Waterfront Square and suffered a cut wound to his head.
The boy fled his attackers and took refuge at Starbucks, where he was met by police.
As the officers spoke with the boy, a crowd had gathered in front of the theater. Several officers began to disperse the crowd, but a security guard told several people in it that they did not have to obey their orders, police reported.
That, police said, prompted some in the crowd to charge the officers and try to hit them. The officers involved used their batons and pepper spray to subdue and arrest them.
Two boys – 15 and 17 years old – were arrested on suspicion of attempted battery of peace officers, public intoxication and resisting arrest. They were released to their parents after being evaluated by medics.
The security guard had no grounds for contradicting the officers, Stockton police Lt. Doug Anderson said. The Police Department is talking to theater management to resolve the misunderstanding, he said.
“He didn’t have any right to say that,” he said. “We’re dealing with that internally.”

Helicopter crashes in Louisana killing 8 http://www.privateofficer.com
HOUMA, La.Jan 5 2009 — Federal officials were expected to arrive Monday to find out why a helicopter bound for an offshore oil platform crashed in Louisiana’s marshlands, killing eight and critically injuring another.
The helicopter, operated by PHI Inc., crashed shortly after taking off Sunday afternoon from the company’s base in Amelia, said Richard Rovinelli, a spokesman for the company.
The cause of the crash, which happened about 100 miles southwest of New Orleans, isn’t clear. Rovinelli did not know the type of helicopter or its exact destination.
He said the helicopter was carrying two pilots and seven passengers. Identities of the victims have not yet been released.
The National Transportation Safety Board has been advised of the crash and investigators were expected to arrive Monday, Rovinelli said.
Petty Officer Jaclyn Young said the Coast Guard assisted Terrebonne Parish sheriff’s deputies in recovering the dead and rescuing the unidentified survivor from the marshy Bayou Penchant area. A sheriff’s office spokesman did not return a phone call seeking comment early Monday morning.
Young said the survivor was being transported to an Ochsner Medical facility in suburban New Orleans. Young said the person was in critical condition.
Lafayette-based PHI is a primary provider of helicopter services to oil and gas platforms that dot the coast of Louisiana. It also flies medical helicopters.
Workers typically are flown to and from their worksites from coastal flight bases.
In June, a PHI Air Medical helicopter crashed in Texas, killing four. The accident in the Sam Houston National Forest killed the pilot, paramedic, nurse and a patient who was being transported from Huntsville to Houston.
That crew agreed to transport the patient after another helicopter company abandoned the mission saying that cloud cover was too low, making visibility poor in the early morning darkness

Federal, state, and local law enforcement are still working on a bizarre missing person and possible kidnapping case in North Alabama.
According to a press release from Lt. Jonathan Green with the Decatur Police Department, Decatur Police Officer, Sgt. Faron Eugene White has been missing since Friday night (1/2/09). Sgt. White was last known to be working alone in his office at the Decatur Police Department Training Center. There is evidence to suggest that a struggle took place between Sgt. White and another person or persons in his office.
Police investigators have combed the office and the area of the training center looking for evidence as well as issued a BOLO(be on the look-out) for Sgt. White and at this point it’s a very active investigation said a Decatur police officer. There is a possibility that our officer is in a life threatening situation and we’re doing everything humanly possible to try to find him the officer stated.
Sgt. White was reported missing by his family early Saturday morning after he did not return home from work. At the time of his disappearance, Sgt. White was wearing a gray T-shirt over a tan long sleeve shirt. Sgt. White is five feet six inches tall and weighs approximately two hundred pounds. He is forty-eight years old and has brown hair and hazel eyes.
The Decatur Police Department is currently working with numerous other law enforcement agencies to locate Sgt. White and is aggressively following up on any lead, no matter how small.
A tip hotline has been established solely for information in this case. If anyone has information about the disappearance of Sgt. Faron White, they need to call the Decatur Police Department at (256) 341-4717
