newarkvalleynews- A Newark Valley High School social studies teacher and former girls’ varsity basketball coach was arrested Friday after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.
John M. Puglisi, 29, of Airport Road, Endicott, was arrested Friday at the school and charged with third-degree rape, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, according to a state police news release.

He was sent to the Broome County jail without bail.
Police said Puglisi had an ongoing sexual relationship with the 16-year-old girl, taking her to his home in Endicott for sex on more than one occasion. Puglisi also forged a note to get her out of school early, police said.
Puglisi coached the girls’ basketball team in 2006-07 and 2007-08. He also coached the Newark Valley boys’ basketball team in 2003 and 2004.
Orders of protection were issued, prohibiting Puglisi from contact with the teen, the school and other students at the school, police said.
The arrest came after an investigation by state police at Owego, the Newark Valley school district and the district attorney’s offices of Broome and Tioga counties.
Phone messages left at the Newark Valley school district office and the home of Superintendent Mary Ellen Grant were not returned.
