Morgan Hill CA. Feb 1 2009
Morgan Hill police are still searching for a group of men who allegedly stabbed a man and assaulted a security guard outside a bar early Saturday morning.
The incident was reported at about 1:40 a.m. in the parking lot outside Strixe Bar at 650 Tennant Station, according to police.
Arriving officers found that a 30-year-old San Jose man had been stabbed while he was sitting in his vehicle and attempting to leave the area, police said.
The suspects then fled the scene in a light-colored BMW or Mercedes vehicle, according to police. A second victim, later identified as a security guard working at the bar, was struck by the suspect vehicle as it fled the area, police said.
The security guard sustained minor injuries in the assault.
The first victim was taken to a local hospital with a puncture wound to his upper chest and was later released, according to police.
The suspects allegedly were yelling gang slogans at the victims during the incident, police said. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Morgan Hill police Detective Beilmann at (408) 779-2101 or the anonymous tip line at (408) 947-STOP.

Rookie deputy takes machete wielding man into custody http://www.privateofficer.com

LAKELAND, FL Feb 1 2009 — A newly trained deputy helped take a machete-wielding man into custody outside Lakeland Regional Medical Center Thursday night, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
22-year old deputy Kimberly Tuck arrived to visit a friend just after 6 pm, when she was approached by one of the hospital’s security guards.
She was off-duty at the time but was in her marked sheriff’s car.
The guard told her there was a man carrying a machete threatening to kill people in the bay just outside of the Emergency Room. Tuck called for back-up, then got patients and staff away from the man, identified as 46-year-old James Craft.
She then approached Craft, who told her he wanted to kill others and himself, authorities said. Craft raised the machete and waived it over his head, ignoring Tuck’s commands to drop it, deputies said.
After Tuck pointed her weapon at Craft, and reiterating her demands to drop the weapon, Craft dropped to his knees and put the machete on the ground.
The security guard handcuffed him, and a Lakeland Police Officer who had arrived at the hospital helped take him into custody.
“Although Deputy Tuck has only been out of training for one week, she has already proven to be a tremendous asset to our agency and our community,” said Sheriff Grady Judd.
“When confronted with a dangerous situation, even in her off-duty time, Deputy Tuck reacted professionally and without hesitation to ensure the safety of everyone in that ER.”

Teacher charged with 80 counts of sexual abuse http://www.privateofficer.com

CHULA VISTA CA Feb 1 2009— A South Bay teacher was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of more than 80 counts of sexual abuse stemming from a four-year relationship with her former student and godson that began when the boy was 11, police said.
Carmina Erica Lopez, 32, a fifth-grade teacher at Sunnyslope Elementary School in Palm City, was taken into custody about 7:30 p.m. in front of her Mission Hills home, Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Linney said.
Investigators believe that Lopez met and began having sex with the boy, who is now 15, when she was his sixth-grade teacher in 2004 at Nestor Elementary School, said Chula Vista police spokesman Bernard Gonzales.
The family was so impressed with Lopez that they asked her to be the boy’s godmother, Gonzales said.
The allegations came to light when the boy disclosed to the county’s Child Welfare Services that Lopez had forced him to have sex with her, Gonzales said. Chula Vista detectives investigated and found information leading to her arrest. Lopez used to live in Chula Vista.
Police believe the relationship with the boy ended last June.
South Bay Union School District Superintendent Carol Parish called the charges Lopez is facing “very serious” and said the district is fully cooperating with the police.
“Ms. Lopez will be on mandatory leave pending the processing of these charges,” she said. “In the meantime we will continue our focus on teaching and learning.”
Lopez was questioned by detectives until early Thursday, when she was booked into Las Colinas jail on 83 counts, which include continuous sexual abuse of a child, aggravated sexual assault of a child, sexual battery of a child, sexual intercourse with a minor, lewd and lascivious acts with a child under age 14, child cruelty and failing to report child abuse.
According to Gonzales, Lopez is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon. Staff writer Chris Moran contributed to this report.

A switchboard operator received a call at 7:32 p.m. from an unknown male who made threats that a bomb would “go off” at the gaming and entertainment facility, according to Plains Township Police Officer Dale Binker.
“The gentleman stated a bomb would go off in 10 minutes,” Binker said.

Shoplifter steals mall security vehicle www.privateofficer.com

Shoplifter steals mall security vehicle http://www.privateofficer.com

Newark DE Feb 1 2009

A suspected shoplifter gave police and security at a local mall a run for their money after he got caught stealing from several stores. It went from theft to stealing a car to chaos as the shoplifter stole a mall security vehicle as he tried to flee from security officers, police said
Brandon Sanders, 23, of North Broad Street in Middletown faces burglary, motor vehicle theft, resisting arrest, shoplifting, marijuana possession, trespassing and possession of counterfeit controlled substance charges.
He was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institute in lieu of a $6,100 secured bond and ordered not to return to the mall.
According to Delaware State Police, troopers were called to Christiana Mall around 2:30 p.m. Friday after mall security officers reported a shoplifter had stolen a mall security Ford Escape. The suspect then ditched the car and ran back into the Macy’s Department store.
In a search of the store, Sanders — who also is known as Brandon Smith — was located in the linens department storage room by store security and police as he was hiding below storage shelves under a pile of towels, police said.
Police said that the incident started after Sanders had shoplifted about $250 worth of clothing from Macy’s before heading to Abercrombie & Fitch, where he stole a $50 bottle of cologne.
Store security notified mall security for assistance in apprehending the suspect and as mall security closed in on him, he fled to a construction trailer in the mall parking lot where he attempted to hide inside.
When security officers again confronted him there, he fled and then doubled back to the area of the construction trailer, where he jumped into a security SUV and drove away.
Before leaving the mall property, he ditched the SUV and re-entered Macy’s.
At that point State Troopers and additional security personnel began searching for the suspect and he was arrested and taken to the barracks according to a trooper.

Security officers at a business called Home, located at 532 W. 27th St., called police when a man seeking entry refused the usual search for guns.
Police said that at around 1:00am Nathaniel Kempson, 25, tried to enter the establishment, and was found to have a gun on him.
Police said that he was charged with weapons possession after he showed a police officer a loaded 380 caliber Bryco Arms pistol wrapped in a white sock that he was carrying in the crotch of his trousers, police said.
The gun had six rounds in the magazine but none in the firing chamber, police said.
Kempson was taken to the precinct and booked and released with a court date.
A security guard at American Apparel, 181 Eighth Ave. at W. 21st St., stopped John Mercado, 38, for trying to walk out of the store shortly after noon on Fri., Jan. 23, without paying for 27 pairs of women’s hot shorts with a total value of $324, police said.
Mercado was taken by police to a precinct for booking and held on bond.

Police investigate suicide at Wisconsin hospital www.privateofficer.com

Police investigate suicide at Wisconsin hospital http://www.privateofficer.com

GREEN BAY WI Feb 1 2009 – Authorities still don’t know why a man drove his car to St. Mary’s Hospital in Green Bay, stepped into the parking lot, and apparently took his own life Saturday morning.
“It wasn’t a situation where there was a danger to the public or danger to the rest of the hospital,” Lt. Mark Hellmann, of the Green Bay Police Department, said.
Hellmann said it is a sensitive situation when someone takes their own life, especially when it happens outside.
“Obviously out in a public setting, it becomes more difficult,” Hellmann added.
Officials with the hospital are still trying to figure out why the man decided to commit suicide just feet from the emergency room entrance.
“As far as we know, he was not here to see any patients. He had been a patient in our emergency department in the past but not for anything significant,” Kris Nystrom, St. Mary’s Communications Director, said.
Nystrom said it is a serious situation any time a person brings a gun to the hospital property, but Saturday’s incident apparently happened so fast, Nystrom said there was no need to take extra security measures.
“It’s just a very unusual situation … tragic,” Nystrom said.
The hospital never closed its doors and care for others went on uninterupted. A portion of the hospital parking did have to be closed, however, for a part of the afternoon.
The name of the victim won’t be released until his family can be notified.

TSA employee sues alledging unfair pay www.privateofficer.com

TSA employee sues alledging unfair pay http://www.privateofficer.com

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah Feb 1 2009

Brett Davis
Staff Reporter

http://www.privateofficer.com/ A female security officer employed by the Transportation Security Administration is probably one of many woman employees who will file suit alledging unfair pay.
The Bountiful woman may even be one of the first in the country to act on a new law on wage discrimination.
The Lilly Ledbetter fair pay act gives workers more time to take their pay discrimination cases to court. It was just signed into law Thursday by President Obam .
Kellie Nelson says she was a TSA Aviation Security inspector out of Boise, Idaho when she experienced discrimination, harassment, and retaliation by her director supervisor.
In addition, Nelson says she had two more years experience than a man who was just starting out and that she was not treated fairly or equally as required under the new law.
She was upset when she found out he was making more than she did. Nelson was a supervisor and says,” And here I am training him, it was a shock.” Nelson and her lawyer want the TSA to give her back pay for lost wages for the two years she was there and some future pay.
No court date has been set. Nelson still works for the TSA out of Salt Lake City, but travels all around the world for her job.

Armed barricaded casino embezzler ends peacefully www.privateofficer.com

Armed barricaded casino embezzler ends peacefully http://www.privateofficer.com

ATLANTIC CITY NJ Feb 1 2009
pressofatlanticicty.com – A suspected embezzler threatened to kill himself after he was barricaded in a security office at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort at about 8:50 p.m. Thursday, police said.
William Serrano, 53, of Corum, N.Y., was brought to the office by police and casino security after police officers from Suffolk, N.Y., tracked him down and detained him for questioning, Atlantic City police Chief John Mooney said.
At some point during questioning, he pulled out a handgun, police said. One or more police officers pushed him into a holding cell and locked the door, according to Rick Santoro, director of risk management for Trump Entertainment Resorts, which owns the three Trump casinos in Atlantic City. Serrano accidentally fired a shot at one point during an 11-hour police standoff that ended peacefully Friday morning, police said.
“He never made any demands or asked for anything. Eventually he got tired and just wore down,” Santoro said.
Mooney said that at about 7:30 a.m., 20 minutes or so before he surrendered, Serrano inadvertently fired his gun. The shooting caused no injuries and did little damage to the room. Mooney said the gunfire did not escalate police tactics to resolve the ordeal.
At that point, he was completely isolated and could do no harm to anyone but himself,” Mooney said. “We were prepared to let the situation play itself out.”
After Serrano was taken into custody, he was sent to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, for a psychiatric evaluation.
Serrano was being sought on an arrest warrant for a third-degree grand larceny charge, a Suffolk County police spokesman told The Associated Press.
Suffolk County police referred other calls to the Atlantic City Police Department and declined comment about the embezzlement investigation. Mooney said Suffolk police did not provide many details of the investigation or Serrano’s background, except to stress their concern that Serrano could be a flight risk.
Mooney said police arrived with an emergency response team shortly before 9 p.m., and hostage negotiators immediately started a conversation with Serrano. A group of police officers were stationed near a loading dock close to the casino’s new tower, which opened last year.
Members of the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement and casino-security officials assisted the Atlantic City Police Department, Mooney said.
The casino remained in operation throughout the ordeal, unlike during a similar incident at the city’s Showboat Casino Hotel in fall 2007. That standoff lasted six hours after a man claimed to have strapped a bomb to himself, prompting police to shut down the gaming hall’s business for the night. The Showboat incident also ended without injury.
Serrano was charged locally with aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

Two arrested in year old security officer murder www.privateofficer.com

Two arrested in year old security officer murder http://www.privateofficer.com

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Feb 1 2009- The crime happened nearly a year ago. Last March, police found Lettrelle Thornton dead inside her townhome on Pollypine Drive.
Friday, police arrested her former roommate Pamela Campbell and charged her with Solicitation of Murder. Police also picked up Campbell’s brother Tony Smith, Tuesday, in Texas and charged him with First Degree Murder.
“This whole year I suspected her,” said Kenda Thornton.
Thornton has had a whole year to think about her aunt’s death and the person responsible.
“It’s been a tough year,” added Thornton. “Just knowing somebody did this to an innocent person that would give you the shirt off their back.”
Last March, Kenda’s aunt, 69-year-old Lettrelle Thornton was found dead in her Virginia Beach home. Police say she was discovered by her roommate. Thornton died from blunt force trauma.
“I just miss her smile,” said Thornton. “She was a people person and there was nothing that she wouldn’t do for you.”
People in the community found that out first hand. Thornton worked as a security guard at Norfolk State University. Her death shocked everyone and month after month police investigated – finally their hard work is paying off.
“We suspected from the beginning that the person they have in custody had something to do with the killing of her,” added Thornton.
The family’s suspicions were right. Police say they’ve arrested Thornton’s former roommate, 42-year-old Pamela Campbell in connection with her death. Campbell’s brother, 37-year-old Tony Smith is also behind bars, charged with murder. Smith, who’s in the Army was arrested at Fort Hood in Texas.
“It’s a big relief,” said Thornton. “It’s a load off of my shoulders and off of my family’s shoulders.”
Kenda says her aunt and Campbell were romantically involved and something must have gone wrong.
“I would ask her what was the reason for doing this,” added Thornton. “She did everything she could for you.”
Tony Smith and Pamela Campbell are being held at Virginia Beach City Jail. Smith declined our request for an interview.
