An attempted robbery at an area Wal-Mart has been thwarted by an employee and an armed guard according to a police statement just released.
Police said that on Feb. 2 there was an armed robbery of the retailer’s cash room at its store at 6600 Glenwood Ave., police said.
The guard was picking up a deposit when a suspect emerged from an adjacent bathroom, displaying a gun and demanding cash. The guard and a store employee managed to quickly shut a door and lock the thief out of the room and according to store employees he eventually fled the store without taking anything.
Police are looking for the suspect described only as a white male in his early 20s, 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a medium build, wearing a toboggan and sunglasses. Police could not provide other distinguishing characteristics, such as the suspect’s weight or hair color and said that they are reviewing store surveillance and that the investigation is continuing.

A Cheektowaga police officer was dragged a distance of two or three car lengths — with his arm caught inside a fleeing suspect’s vehicle — before he managed to fire a warning shot that prompted him to be released.
The officer was not seriously injured, and police later caught two men after a car and foot chase that ended in Buffalo late Tuesday afternoon.
The incident began at about 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, when J.C. Penney security officers spotted two people stealing perfume and cologne from the store. Security officers watched the two flee and contacted Cheektowaga police with the license-plate number of the getaway vehicle.
Officer Brad Hebeler stopped the vehicle, which had become tied up in traffic on Galleria Drive.
“He approaches the car, they roll down their window, his left hand gets inside the car, they grab his arm and begin to pull away,” Capt. John Glascott said, based on the police report of the incident.
Hebeler used his other arm to fire one round at one of the tires, which apparently prompted the two to release his arm. He later was treated for arm bumps and bruises and released from St. Joseph Community Hospital.
Meanwhile, the getaway vehicle took off westbound, in the eastbound lanes of Walden Avenue, before moving into the westbound lanes and going into Buffalo, with police in pursuit. The pursued car then struck the rear of a car at Genesee and Barthel streets, and two men got out of the vehicle.
Several police officers from Buffalo and Cheektowaga gave chase, capturing the two men on foot. Police also recovered more than $2,000 worth of stolen perfume and cologne.
Officers charged Carols Rivera, 27, and Jorge Estremera, 38, both of Hudson Street, Buffalo, with criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle and resisting arrest.
Police also charged Rivera, the driver, with assault and reckless endangerment.

http://www.privateofficer.com/ Authorities in the small town of Lebanon have confirmed in a press release that a city police officer was found slain in his home in central Kentucky.
Kentucky State Police were called to the home of 40-year-old David M. Ford and said that they are now investigating the death as a homicide. Police say he was found by his wife when she arrived Tuesday afternoon at their home in Taylor County.
Trooper Billy Gregory says Tonya Ford reported that her husband had been shot. Police and emergency personnel rushed to the home but Gregory says he was pronounced dead at the scene.
KSP investigators have not released any other details about their investigation and officers at the city police department said that Ford had been with the Lebanon police force in neighboring Marion County for 3½ years.

startelegram.com — A Haltom City man accused of robbing a convenience store with a toy handgun remained in jail Wednesday after he was arrested shortly after the holdup.
Another man who was with the Haltom City man during his getaway also was arrested on drug and weapons charges, police said.
Police identified the man arrested for the robbery as James May, 23, who was in jail with bail set at $25,000.
Tex Martin Jr., 40, of Cleburne, was in jail under suspicion of possession of a controlled substance/marijuana and possession of a prohibited weapon.
The holdup happened about 3:20 a.m. Tuesday at Doc’s Food Store, 1718 Haltom Road.
A man walked into the store and brandished what employees believed was a handgun, police said. The robber took an undisclosed amount of money, lottery tickets, cigarettes and the wallets of the employees, police said.
The bandit ran out of the store and jumped into a vehicle that sped away, police said. Officers in the area saw the vehicle driving away from the store and followed it until the driver lost control and slid into a ditch on an access road on Texas 121.
Police detained Martin and a woman who also was in the vehicle. May fled on foot, police said.
But within minutes, a security guard approached police and told them that he had May in his van. May had tried to hitch a ride with the guard, but the guard had heard the sirens and drove to the officers, police said.

Shoplifters beware.
Orland Park police want the authority to impound vehicles used in retail thefts.
“It’s another tool in the toolbox,” Chief Tim McCarthy told the village board’s public safety committee this week.
The committee approved the request and a similar request for vehicles involved in car burglaries. The full board is expected to vote on the changes at its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday.
If approved, the measures would go into effect immediately.
Orland Park is a regional retail center with Orland Square Mall, Orland Crossings, Orland Park Place, Orland Plaza and smaller strip centers throughout the village. Shoppers are expected to generate $12.7 million in home rule sales tax revenue for the village in the upcoming budget year.
McCarthy said he hopes the proposed measure will protect retailers by deterring shoplifters.
He said the village saw retail thefts increase by 12 percent last year. Burglaries to motor vehicles also are up, but he did not have those statistics readily available.
“They drive around in crews of two or three and work an area,” he said of the burglars.
As a home rule community, Orland Park can move to impound vehicles used in crimes.
Under the proposal, police would impound a vehicle that a person who is charged with shoplifting more than $150 in merchandise drove to the store, McCarthy said.
The vehicle owner would have to pay $500 to get it back. It is the same procedure the police department follows for drunken driving, prostitution and driving with a suspended license, he said. The department has been impounding vehicles for certain offenses since 2006, he said.

Deputy sheriff wanted sex with 10 yr old http://www.privateofficer.com
A Bibb County sheriff’s deputy was charged Wednesday with attempting to have sex with a 10 year old minor girl.
According to police records, an undercover agent, posing as a mother of a girl under the age of 10, made plans to meet Gregory Todd Bowden, 42, in Atlanta.
Authorities say that federal agents were on the internet conducting an undercover operation when they were contacted by Bowden.
The deputy and agents talked repeatedly online and on the phone, an FBI spokesman said.
Bowden, of Byron, allegedly wanted to have sex with the minor and her mother, the spokesman said.
