A man who had been arrested on accusations of shoplifting at a Wal-Mart in Dallas today slipped out of a pair of handcuffs, carjacked a pickup with someone still inside and ultimately escaped in an Irving neighborhood, police said.
A Dallas police officer had arrested a man at the Wal-Mart at Interstate 30 and Cockrell Hill Road and was finishing paperwork in the loss prevention office about 2:40 p.m. when the suspect broke free and ran into the parking lot, police said.
He commandeered a red Dodge pickup and drove off, dropping the 24-year-old man who was inside off about 2 miles away in a neighborhood near Hale Street and North Bond Avenue before leading police on a short chase up Loop 12.
It’s unclear if the man was injured, but an ambulance was dispatched, officials said.
The suspect ditched the pickup in a ravine on Singleton Boulevard near Loop 12 and ran away, police said.
Officers set up a perimeter and continue to search for the suspect. Police said they know the suspect’s identity, but they did not release it this afternoon.

Mall shooting leaves man dead http://www.privateofficer.com
The man was stopped in an older model white Cadillac at Broadway and Main Place Drive when another man walked up to the vehicle and fired shots inside 12:30 p.m., police said.
The Cadillac then apparently careened through a wall of landscaped vegetation at the entrance to MainPlace and continued 250 yards more before hitting a tree and bursting into flames.
Neil Jessen, 39, of Anaheim, said he saw the man slumped inside the vehicle as it burned and rushed to pull him out of the wreckage.
“I pulled him out – he was dead,” Jessen said. “I checked for a pulse – nothing.”
Police said the victim died at a hospital.
Jessen said he saw several bullet holes, including in the man’s white T-shirt, the driver’s side seat headrest, and seat. Both drivers’ side windows were shot out, he said.
The dead man’s identity has not been released.
Jessen said the dead man appeared to be in his early 20s, with a bald head and tattoos, and was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

Alabama officer leads police on chase http://www.privateofficer.com
An off-duty Prattville police officer was arrested on drug charges Wednesday afternoon in Montgomery following a car chase.
Christopher Eldridge, 35, of the 600 block of Wisteria Lane in Prattville, was charged with possession of a controlled substance in addition to misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, said Maj. Huey Thornton, a spokesman for the Montgomery Police Department.
Thornton said the controlled substance was crack cocaine. Eldridge also was issued “several” traffic citations, according to Thornton.
Prattville Mayor Jim Byard Jr. confirmed Thursday that Eldridge is a third-shift patrol officer with the Prattville Police Department. Byard said Eldridge was off duty due to military leave.
“Right now this is a personal and legal matter the officer has to work through,” Byard said. “In the future, it will become a personnel issue for the city. We don’t comment on personnel or pending personnel matters.”
Eldridge could not be reached for comment Thursday morning. There is no number listed for him in the Prattville phone book. Directory assistance listed a “C. Eldridge” on Wisteria Lane, but that number is unpublished at the owner’s request.
Prattville Police Chief Alfred Wadsworth said he would not comment until he had a chance to speak with Eldridge.
Eldridge allegedly was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala the wrong way in the northbound lanes of Interstate 85, Thornton said. A Montgomery police officer tried to pull him over, but he led police on a chase, he said. The pursuit never exceeded 50 mph, he said.
Police pursued Eldridge as he exited the interstate at Day Street and went through downtown Montgomery to Atlanta Highway, Thornton said. When the chase neared Greenwood Funeral Home on Lincoln Road, the pursuing patrol car tapped the back of Eldridge’s vehicle, which spun out, Thornton said.
Eldridge then became combative with officers and was hit with a Taser, Thornton said. He was taken by ambulance to Jackson Hospital for treatment, Thornton said.
Eldridge was booked into the Montgomery County Jail at 6 p.m. Wednesday and released on bonds totaling $16,000 at 8:07 p.m. Wednesday, said Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall.

At a press conference Friday, Lawson announced the arrest of Officer Gustavo Rivera for principal to theft, malfeasance in office, and obstruction of justice. In addition, Lawson said they have terminated Rommel Figueroa, Doug Zemlik and James Gregoire III for violation of department regulations.
According to Lawson, the four officers were off duty at a lounge when another man who had been riding a motorcycle came inside the building. Lawson said the man and at least one of the officers exchanged unpleasant glances and that led Gustavo and another bar patron, identified as Daniel Kempton, to leave the bar and move the motorcycle several blocks away.
The motorcycle was reported missing on Dec. 19 and was recovered earlier this month.
Lawson said the investigation was turned over to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office task force and the officers in question were asked about the bike’s disappearance and denied any involvement, but he said a surveillance camera caught the move.
Gustavo was arrested for his involvement, while the other officers were fired for their knowledge of the incident and their failure to report it, according to Lawson.

Alexandria Police officers were called in after a shoplifting suspect tangled with mall security officers trying to bring him into custody, police reported.
A Burlington Coat Factory employee told authorities that he saw Kendric McGee, 30, of 620 Bogan St. taking off the tags and sensors from clothing items and putting the items in his pants, authorities reported.
Two mall security officers attempted to place McGee in handcuffs, but McGee allegedly resisted by hitting one officer in the hand with the restraints and pushing the other away while trying to escape, officials said. The officers managed to restrain McGee and handed him into police custody.
McGee was charged with simple battery, aggravated battery, theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.
