Chemical fumes forces Wal-Mart evacuation www.privateofficer.com

Corpus Christi TX Feb 22 2009
A local Wal-Mart evacuated last night after what may have been a chemical spill. It happened a little after 9:30 at the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Greenwood.
Customers and employees began to feel sick and were complaining of burning eyes and sore throats.
Customer Yolanda Ramirez says, “I was taking some items to be checked prices and it hit me all of a sudden something just hit me. I felt like I was choking my nose was burning my throat was burning. I just turned around and walked away because I thought I was going to black out.”
Once fire officials and haz-mat arrived, they found no spills inside the store and dubbed the Wal-Mart as safe, but they say, it’s good the store acted with precaution.
CCFD Battalion Chief Jeff Willis says, “The store did a great job in fact they immediately hit an alarm and I believe they got on the intercom and moved everyone out of the store very quickly so it seems like it went very well.”
Wal-Mart’s assessment team will now come in to try and determine what may have caused customers and employees to feel ill.
The store is now back open.
