A security officer working at a jewelry store in Knoxville Tennessee shot two people Saturday after responding to a fight in progress.
Knoxville police said that the unidentified guard shot a man and woman Saturday in the parking lot of Markman’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry, 6932 Kingston Pike at around 2:45 p.m.
Arrison Kirby, who was nearby when the shooting happened, was working at Papa Johns Pizza next door to the jewelry store.
Before the shooting, he says the couple was arguing in front of Papa Johns. A few minutes later, they walked to the Markman’s parking lot where the argument turned physical.
One of the jewelry store managers saw the argument become physical and told the security officer and that’s when he went outside and got involved.
“It was crazy. I looked outside and saw this guy on the ground bleeding pretty bad then police started showing up,” said Kirby.
Knoxville Police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said that prior to the shooting they had received calls of the domestic fight and had officers responding to the shopping center to investigate.
The victims have been identified as Elizabeth Day, 18, and Kevin Bowman, 22, and both were taken to UT Medical Center. Day is listed in stable condition and Bowman is in critical condition.
The name of the security guard is not being released while police investigate but area media reported that he was in his sixties and has worked for Vinson Security since 2006.
Police say they do not know what caused the security officer to open fire and charges may be filed after they meet with the district attorney on Monday

Police say what started as a minor shoplifting incident involving a $3.26 item escalated quickly into a felony robbery charge.
Police said that when Logan Lynn Campbell, 18, of Diana was stopped by Wal-Mart security and told to come back inside he began fighting with them and injured one security officer escalating the theft charge to robbery.
Campbell was subdued and police arrested him and transported him to the county detention where he remains jailed on a $7,500 bond, charged with one count of robbery.
Officers responded to the she shoplifting call at Wal-Mart, 515 E. Loop 281, around 6 p.m. Friday.
According to an arrest report, Campbell attempted to shoplift an unknown item and resisted all security atempts to detain hm.
Police said that regardless of the value of a shoplifted item, when force is used to steal that item, the state law elevates the charge to robbery, a much more serious offense.

Off-duty deputy kills unruly bar patron www.privateofficer.com

Off-duty deputy kills unruly bar patron http://www.privateofficer.com

CHESTER NY Mar 2 2009 — An off-duty sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a bar patron in the Chester Mall parking lot Saturday as the frenzied man repeatedly throttled his SUV at a bouncer who had ejected him from the bar, police and eyewitnesses said.
The dead man was identified as a Goshen resident. Chester Mayor Philip Valastro said the victim’s name was being withheld because police could not find his family.
Sheriff Carl DuBois identified the deputy as 30-year-old Jeremy Yela, a K9 officer who’s been with the sheriff’s office since 1998. DuBois said Yela has been placed on a seven-day administrative leave, but he would not offer details about the shooting because the investigation was turned over to Village of Chester police, state police, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
The shooting happened about 12:15 a.m. at G.W.’s Sports Grill in the Chester Mall. The patron was kicked out of the bar after he got into an argument with another customer. He then got into his silver SUV and sped toward the bouncer, who was standing outside.
Bar owner John Salerno was not at the bar when the incident happened, but his workers told him that the crazed driver threw his SUV into reverse after his first pass at the bouncer and tried twice more to hit the man. At some point the driver struck the bouncer, who suffered a broken leg.
Witnesses told Salerno that Yela, who was off-duty, identified himself as a police officer several times as he tried to stop the driver. He then pulled his gun and shot the man, killing him.
A bullet also struck a bystander, who was in stable condition according to Valastro and police. It’s unclear how many shots Yela fired or why he was outside the bar.
“This is not a happy day for this whole community,” Valastro said. “But that deputy stopped something that could have been a lot worse than it was.”
All police agencies refused to provide details about the shooting, including the names of victims, when contacted by telephone and in person by reporters on Saturday.
Cops, firefighters and medical workers cordoned off a large perimeter around the bar, and dozens of people stood behind the yellow police tape as the driver of the SUV, dressed in a dark short-sleeve shirt, lay on his back, bleeding badly. Salerno said the victim was not a regular at the bar and that his staff “never expected him to do this” when they escorted him out.
A helicopter landed in the mall’s parking lot and took one of the victims to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
Later Saturday morning, a construction crew fixed broken glass and a dent in the bar’s facade where the man’s car ran up onto the sidewalk. The bar was open Saturday night. A note left by a friend on the business’s MySpace page Saturday told customers to come to G.W.’s, calling it a “great bar.”
“We’re not going to let one incident change that,” it said.
The case will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether Yela followed police protocol when he shot the man.

Best Buy store evacuated after armed shoplifting http://www.privateofficer.com

A Best Buy store in Smyrna was evacuated Thursday evening after an alleged shoplifter claimed to be armed. He wasn’t, but 51-year-old Otis Hutcherson still managed to cause a stir.
Two stores adjoining the Best Buy in the Promenade shopping center also were evacuated and remained empty for nearly 90 minutes while Hutcherson played possum, vanishing as employees and customers fled the premises, police said.
“He had crawled up into the ceiling to hide,” said Michael Smith, spokesman for the Smyrna Police Department.
Some Best Buy employees had spotted him disappearing into the store’s office, so officers knew where to look.
“It would’ve been unsafe for an officer to just pop his head up through one of the panels not knowing whether the suspect had a gun,” Smith said.
Hutcherson, of Atlanta, finally gave up shortly before 7:30 p.m. He was taken into custody and charged with shoplifting some DVDs. Smith said the suspect could face additional charges.

Authorities say that they are still investigating the robbery of a Barefoot Landing security guard which occurred on Thursday.
According to the security officer, he was robbed at gunpoint early Thursday by two men in a parking lot, according to the police report.
The guard told police he was sitting in his vehicle about 12:20 a.m. Thursday when he noticed two men walking across the graveyard toward his car, police said. When the guard started to get out of the vehicle, he said one of the men put a handgun to his head and demanded money.
The security officer said that he told the robbers several times that he was a security guard and had no money, according to the report. The men ran back across the graveyard toward a nearby church. The security officer said that he tried to follow them, but lost sight of them and called police.
According to police, no suspects were found in the area and there’s no leads to go right now but the detective division is following up on the robbery attempt.

Concerns raised over TVA security guard hiring http://www.privateofficer.com

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. March 2 2009 (AP) — The Tennessee Valley Authority’s decision to put nuclear power plant guards back on the payroll has raised safety and job security concerns with a labor union.
The nation’s largest public utility announced in September it was taking over security services at its three nuclear plants after contracting for guards through Pinkerton Government Services since 2002.
As TVA moves ahead with those plans, members of the 500-guard force wanting to stay with TVA are having to apply for “at will” positions without union representation, the United Government Security Officers of America union complained Wednesday.
In a statement, the union said the “direct” hiring of guards at the Browns Ferry plant in Alabama next month “has caused significant concerns among officers about job security.” It also “raised questions about previous safety issues and a possible increase in safety infractions during the changeover and beyond.”
TVA spokesman Terry Johnson said having guards that are TVA employees rather than contractors will improve “lines of communication” between the security force and their managers at Sequoyah, Browns Ferry and the Watts Bar plant near Spring City.
It also will “allow TVA to better focus on the most important aspect of our work, which is insuring the health and safety of our employees, the public and our plants.”
TVA developed a detailed plan for the changeover that will insure “security is maintained at a high state of readiness during the transition,” Johnson said.
The UGSOA represented guards at two of the plants — Sequoyah near Chattanooga and Browns Ferry near Huntsville, Ala.
Johnson said newly hired guards will have the “same rights and protections as other employees of the agency,” including the “right to choose whether or not they want union representation.”
The transition is slated to occur in April at Browns Ferry, in May at Watts Bar near Spring City and in June at Sequoyah, Johnson said.

Woman arrested in pain medicine caper http://www.privateofficer.com

Bessemer NC Mar 2 2009

Private Officer News Network
http://www.privateofficer.com/
A woman from Bessemer City must have had a mighty headache because police said that she went into a local Wal-Mart store and is accused of stealing 27 boxes of pain reliever on Saturday.
Loss prevention agents told police that they watched Sheila K. Bridges, 41, of 303 E. Maryland Ave., take 25 boxes of Advil and two boxes of Tylenol from the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 3000 E. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia.
A store loss prevention employee said in an arrest warrant affidavit that Bridges concealed the pain relievers in her purse and shopping cart, then left the store without paying for them.
The over-the-counter medications have a combined value of $232.04, according to the affidavit.
As she left the store, the loss prevention agent stopped her and notified police.
Bridges was charged with misdemeanor larceny and booked in the Gaston County Jail under a $1,500 secured bond.
If she didn’t have a headache at the store, she probably does now.

Plainville CT Mar 2 2009
A family of four spent part of Thursday night in the town lockup after a mom and 13-year-old daughter were charged with shoplifting and the father and teen son were charged with probation violation when they tried to bail out the woman and girl, police said.
“I don’t ever recall having four related people in lockup at the same time,” Lt. Brian Mullins, on the force since the 1970s, said Friday.
“It’s pretty unusual.”Elizabeth Russell, 45, of Cromwell and the juvenile were arrested at 7:30 p.m. after store security at Kohl’s Department Store alerted police that a woman and child were stealing clothing and jewelry, Mullins said. The mother was charged with fifth-degree larceny, conspiracy and risk of injury to a minor.
The juvenile was referred to juvenile authorities, Mullins said.
Daryll Russell, 47, came into the police station to free the two and was arrested on a warrant alleging he violated conditions of probation for burglary and larceny in Cheshire.
Jonathan Russell, 19, came in next to free the three and was charged when police checked his name and found he was wanted for violating probation in a Southington larceny and motor vehicle case.”They both said they were surprised when we told them of the warrants,” Mullins said.Three of the four eventually were able to post bond and were released.
The father was held overnight, with bail set at $50,000, and arraigned Friday in Superior Court in Bristol. Police contacted state child protection officials about the juvenile’s welfare.
