Gunmen kill 10 in South Alabama www.privateofficer.com

SAMSON, Ala. Mar 10 2009– At least ten people were shot and killed Tuesday in south Alabama, including the gunman, officials said.

Six people were confirmed dead in the town of Samson, said police dispatcher Jim Stromenger.

Samson Police Chief Gary Weeks said the suspect was shot and killed. But it is unclear whether it was self-inflicted or whether he was shot by police near the Reliable Metal Products company outside neighboring Geneva.

Stromenger said the gunman started firing at a gas station in Samson, shooting a woman there.

He then went to a Samson home and shot five people, Stromenger said. He said it was unclear how the shooter might have been related to the people at the house.

Stromenger said the shooter then drove 12 miles east to Geneva “and apparently he shot some people there and he made it to Reliable metal and that’s where the incident ended.”

The suspect’s name was not released.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation said it would have a statement later on the shootings.

Reliable Metal Products makes grills and vents for heating and AC systems, mainly for hotels. A call to a person who answered the phone at the plant said no one could talk about the shooting.

The towns of Geneva and Samson are about 11 miles apart, and roughly 30 miles south of Fort Rucker, near the Florida border in southeast Alabama. Geneva’s population is about 4,400 and Samson, 2,000.

Fight breaks out at “Stop the Violence” event www.privateofficer.com

Fight breaks out at “Stop the Violence” event http://www.privateofficer.com

Silver Spring MD Mar 10 2009
A fight broke out Saturday night after a youth-led “Stop the Violence” concert in downtown Silver Spring, leading to 16 arrests for offenses including assault and disorderly conduct, Montgomery County police said.
About 7,000 people gathered Saturday on Ellsworth Drive for a concert organized by Mixed Unity, a coalition of youth from various organizations that formed after the shooting death of Montgomery Blair high school freshman Tai Lam on Nov. 1, 2008. The concert’s theme was “Stop the Violence” and included live music, break dancing and poetry.
At about 9 p.m., as the concert was ending, fighting began near the stage on Ellsworth Drive, according to a police news release. About 30 officers serving as event security responded to the fighting and about 45 more responding officers from various agencies arrived to help quell the violence, using pepper spray to subdue the fighting, said Lt. Paul Starks, a spokesman for Montgomery County police.
The fighting spread away from the stage to the surrounding blocks in downtown Silver Spring before the responding officers controlled the area, Starks said.
Of the 16 arrests, “roughly half to two-thirds” were adults, while the rest were juveniles, Starks said. There were no serious injuries but Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service treated people for the effects of pepper spray, Starks said.
The motive for the fight is still unknown and there is no indication whether weapons were used or if there was any gang involvement, Starks said.
“This is something the police department as well and other sponsors are going to look at and review,” Starks said. “…This is an area that is a good area where events like these occur quite often and now we are getting into the season where they will occur more often.”

Virginia shoplifter’s boldness lands him in jail www.privateofficer.com

Virginia shoplifter’s boldness lands him in jail http://www.privateofficer.com

Wytheville WV Mar 10 2009
Some people apparently just can’t resist shoplifting at the Wytheville Walmart.
A second trip to the local store resulted in multiple charges against a West Virginia shoplifting ring and the recovery of thousands of dollars of high end electronics, a stash of drugs and large amounts of cash.
According to Chief Deputy Keith Dunagan of the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office, investigators were called to the Wytheville Walmart early Thursday afternoon.
They were told by employees that while viewing security tapes from Feb. 28 they had observed individuals shoplifting electronics.Investigators were asked to look at the tapes to see if they recognized any of the suspects in the video.
They were unable to identify any of the men.Approximately an hour later, Dunagan said, investigators received another call from the Walmart security team telling them the suspects were back in the store. They also were told the suspects were working the same scam as they had done in February.Walmart security and the Sheriff’s Office officers took two of the suspects into custody and recovered approximately $1,700 worth of electronics stolen from Walmart. Officers also located a third man in the getaway vehicle and took him into custody.A follow up investigation, Dunagan stated, led investigators from the Sheriff’s Office and Walmart security to seek assistance from the West Virginia State Police in obtaining a search warrant of a residence in Pax, W.Va.
The chief deputy reported the execution of the search warrant on Timothy A. Bowyer’s residence resulted in the seizure of three and a half kilos of cocaine, four pounds of marijuana, $66,000 in cash and approximately $100,000 worth of Walmart property from stores in Virginia and West Virginia.
A Chevy model pickup truck was confiscated, too, Dunagan said.Arrested and charged in Wythe County as a result of the investigation were: Sidney Ballard Williams, 33,n of Scarboro, W.Va.
He is charged with two counts of conspiracy to sell stolen property, two counts of larceny with intent to sell, conspiracy to conceal stolen goods and larceny with intent to sell. Brandon Roy Dickens, 22, ofn Pax, W.Va. He is charged with shoplifting, conspiracy to commit shoplifting, conspiracy to sell stolen property and larceny with intent to sell. Johnn Daniel Shifflet, 20, of Fayetteville, W.Va.
He faces charges in the Feb. 28 crime of conspiracy to shoplift, shoplifting, larceny with intent to sell and conspiracy to commit larceny. He was arrested Friday afternoon in West Virginia and waived extradition to Wythe County.Dunagan reported Bowyer is being held at the Southern Regional Jail in Beckley, W.Va.
He was unable to determine the charges against Bowyer.Charges against the driver of the getaway car, the chief deputy stated, are pending.

Charlotte school bus crashes, driver charged with DUI

CHARLOTTE, NC March 10 2009 (WBTV) – A Charlotte Mecklenburg School bus driver was charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving following a crash near Mint Hill Tuesday morning.
The wreck happened along the 8900 block of Truelight Church Road around 6:45 a.m.
“We were fortunate that this bus did not actually roll over,” said Mint Hill Fire Department Chief Jeremy Russell. “The injuries could have been much worse.”
Desiree Kelly, 32, was driving the bus.
According to a Mint Hill police officer who responded to the scene, Kelly was driving under the influence of some type of impairing substance.
She was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews for a DWI test. Then, she was taken to the Mecklenburg County jail for processing. She has been charged with commercial DWI and reckless driving.
Charlotte Mecklenburg School spokeswoman LaTarzja Henry said 15 Independence High School students were on bus #948 when the crash occurred.
Four of the students were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The remaining 11 students were treated at the scene by MEDIC.
“Incidents like today reinforce why paramedics from both Medic and Mint Hill train to work together as well as to operate on large scenes,” said Eric Morrison, spokesman for MEDIC. “Paramedics could have been faced with up to 15 patients with the potential for numerous serious injuries.”

Security nabs man smuggling gun into court www.privateofficer.com

Security nabs man smuggling gun into court http://www.privateofficer.com

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. Mar 10 2009 — DeKalb County police said Monday a Stone Mountain man tried to smuggle a loaded gun into a metro Atlanta courthouse by hiding it in a diaper bag.
The man is out on bond. He and his girlfriend said they didn’t know the gun was there.
“It was loaded and it was in a diaper bag,” DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown told Channel 2 Action News reporter Mark Winne. “Employees are trained to react a certain way and they did that.”
Inside one diaper bag Friday at the DeKalb County Courthouse security checkpoint, deputies said some bottles contained formula and a 9 mm pistol contained bullets.
“The technician saw the weapon come through the X-ray machine, called for the deputy who came over and confirmed that that’s in fact what it was,” said Brown.
“I reached inside the X-ray machine after it was shut off, pulled the bag out and asked the public whose bag this was. The gentleman, he identified that it was his,” said Deputy John Feltz with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
A report indicated Steven Richardson, 29, of Stone Mountain was arrested.
Deputy Ann Marie Ramey said the woman with the baby echoed Richardson’s claim that they had retrieved the baby and the bag from a relative’s home that morning and they didn’t know about the gun.
“He did say that was his baby bag so they came in together, she held the child and he claimed the bag, so therefore he was the one arrested,” said Ramey.
Richardson was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a weapon at a public gathering, carrying a pistol without a permit, and theft by receiving stolen property.

A security officer attempting to stop a shoplifter at the Weis Markets in Millersville was attacked, police said.
Authorities said that on Monday at about 10:20 p.m., security officer Chris Koelsch said he witnessed a man about to leave the store at 1204 Millersville Pike with food shoved down the back of his pants. Koelsch stopped the suspect and when he tried to detain the man he became violent, police said.
Police said the suspect, David M. Drummond, 40, of West Charlotte Street, Millersville, struck Koelsch in the stomach and then in the throat with a closed fist.Officer Justin Miller said the blow to Koelsch’s throat was hard enough to keep the security guard from breathing for a few moments.
Drummond was subdued as officers arrived, and they said he appeared to be intoxicated.According to Miller’s report, the suspect had a “strong odor” of alcohol on his breath, “spoke with a slur, had bloodshot eyes and swayed back and forth while standing.”
Drummond was arrested and will be charged before a magistrate district judge with simple assault, retail theft and public drunkenness.
According to police, the food Drummond was attempting to steal was worth $5.66.
