Twenty miles of death in South Alabama http://www.privateofficer.com

SAMSON, Ala. Mar 11 2009 — A man who killed 10 people in two rural Alabama counties before committing suicide had been keeping a list of those “who done him wrong,” a district attorney said Wednesday.
Investigators trying figure out why Michael McLendon, 28, killed relatives and others Tuesday afternoon found the list in his home, Coffee County District Attorney Gary McAliley said. The list was made up of former employers, including a sausage plant where he suddenly quit his job last Wednesday.
“We found a list of people he worked with, people who had done him wrong,” said McAliley in a brief interview outside his mother’s house where the rampage begain.
The killings were the worst mass killings by a single gunman in Alabama state history, and devastated rural communities in two counties near the Florida border. While the list was one of several perplexing clues that emerged Wednesday about McClendon’s life, authorities couldn’t say what set him off.
And the people who might be able to explain — his mother, his grandmother, his uncle and two cousins — were among the victims. A witness said the four had no time to react when McClendon wordlessly and expressionlessly pulled his car up to a house where they were sitting and opened fire.
The rampage started around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, and took only about an hour from start to finish. In that time, McClendon sprayed more than 200 rounds, authorities said.
First, McLendon set his mother’s house on fire and killed her, then drove 12 miles and opened fire on his uncle’s front porch, killing five more people and his grandmother, who lived next door, authorities said. Then, he drove through town and fired seemingly at random, killing three more people. With police in pursuit, he ended up at the metals plant where he once worked, and shot himself after engaging in a shootout with law enforcement officers.
“He cleaned his family out,” Coffee County Coroner Robert Preachers said.
McLendon was briefly employed by the police department in Samson in 2003 and spent about a week and a half at the police academy, dropping out before he received firearms training, said Col. Chris Murphy, director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety. More recently, he worked nearly two years at food manufacturer and distributor Kelley Foods in Elba, about 25 miles north of where he shot most of his victims.
The company didn’t specify what his position was, but said in a statement that he was a “reliable team leader” who was well liked, but quit last Wednesday.
Though Kelley Foods said he left voluntarily, the company was on the list of people he felt had slighted him, said McAliley. So were another of his employers, Reliable Metals in Samson, and a Pilgrim’s Pride plant near Enterprise where his mother had worked. The district attorney said the mother had recently been laid off from the plant.
McClendon worked at Reliable Metal Products until 2003, when Geneva County District Attorney Kirke Adams said he was forced to resign. A co-worker there, Jerry Hysmith, echoed Kelley Foods’ description, saying McClendon was shy, quiet and laid-back.
“Something had to snap,” said Hysmith, 35, who lives in Samson, and worked with McClendon in 2001.
The victims were identified as McLendon’s mother, Lisa McLendon, 52; his uncle, James Alford White, 55; his cousin, Tracy Michelle Wise, 34; a second cousin, Dean James Wise, 15; and his grandmother, Virginia E. White, 74. Also killed were James Irvin Starling, 24; Sonja Smith, 43; and Bruce Wilson Malloy, 51.
The wife and daughter of Geneva County Deputy Josh Myers, who was one of the law enforcement officers involved in the chase for McLendon, also died in the shooting spree. Andrea D. Myers, 31, was visiting the home with 18-month old Corrine Gracy Myers and 4-month-old Ella Myers when the shooting began.
Ella was flown to a hospital in Pensacola and was awaiting surgery for a wound to the leg caused by either a bullet or shrapnel. She was in fair condition, authorities said.
“I cried so much yesterday, I don’t have a tear left in me,” said the girl’s father, who did not know McClendon. “I feel like I should be able to walk in the house and my wife would be there, my baby girl climbing on me.”
The first killed Tuesday was McClendon’s mother. Authorities said he put her on an L-shaped couch, piled stuff on top of her and set her afire. He said McClendon also shot four dogs at the house.
A dozen miles away, he gunned down the other relatives and sent panicked bystanders fleeing and ducking behind cars. His uncle’s wife, Phyllis White, sought refuge in the house of neighbor Archie Mock.
“She was just saying, `I think my family is dead, I think my family is dead,’” said Mock, 55.
Neighbor Tom Knowles saw McClendon pull up and begin firing without saying a word, leaving his victims no time to react.
“He had no expression — just dead,” he said.
McClendon went inside the house and chased Phyllis White out before driving off, Knowles said. He returned moments later in his car as if he were still looking for her. The witness then made eye contact with him.
“He had cold eyes. There was nothing. I hollered at him. I said, ‘Look, boy, I ain’t done nothing to you,’” Knowles said. McLendon then drove off.
After the gunman left, Knowles said he and his daughter found the baby Ella bleeding: “The only thing that was alive was the 3-month-old baby.”
McClendon shot more victims at random as he drove toward the metals plant where he once worked. Smith was struck down as she walked out of a gas station. Malloy was hit while driving. Starling was shot as he walked.
At the Reliable plant, McClendon got out of his car and fired at police with his assault rifle, wounding Geneva Police Chief Frankie Lindsey, authorities said. He then walked inside and killed himself.
Once investigators got a look at the ammunition he was carrying, they feared the bloodshed could have been worse. “I’m convinced he went over there to kill more people. He was heavily armed,” said Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton.
The community was still in shock Wednesday.
“This was 20-something miles of terror in my district,” said State Sen. Harri Anne Smith, R-Slocomb.

Vanderbilt University police take over mall security www.privateofficer.com

Vanderbilt University police take over mall security http://www.privateofficer.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. March 11 2009
newschannel5.com- Vanderbilt University Medical Center recently moved into the 100 Oaks Shopping Center, bringing a lot more traffic to the area – and more security.
The new medical offices have brought thousands of new workers, shoppers, and patients to the mall. With that progress comes more security concerns. Officials said Vanderbilt Police have met the challenge.
Vanderbilt University’s police department has taken over all security operations on the mall property. The armed police officers with arrest powers make all the difference, according to shoppers and merchants.
“I noticed right away when I came in. I saw Vanderbilt patrols out there. I hadn’t noticed before,” says shopper Mary Diehl.
Vanderbilt police now protect and serve the massive 100 Oaks shopping and medical complex. The addition of the university’s Vanderbilt health services means the mall is now an extension of the main campus.
“I see them on foot. I’ve seen them in the car going up and down waving at people,” says Diehl.
“We came out here into the unknown, not knowing how everything would go and how we would be received,” says Lieutenant Terry Hutcherson with the Vanderbilt Police Department.
Hutcherson says they have issued 29 misdemeanor citations, mostly for shoplifting. One store employee was arrested for stealing money.
Officers have also given out 5 traffic citations, mostly for running stop signs.
“We’ve been heavily patrolling the parking areas and made some improvements there,” says Hutcherson.
Mall merchants notice major improvements over the private security guards that patrolled 100 Oaks before. They say police officers are readily available when needed.
“It’s like night and day, three to five minutes when you call. They’re right here and come really fast,” says store owner Ronald Gooch.
Vanderbilt police are on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
“They come in the store and browse the store every 30 minutes to an hour,” says Gooch.
“People go to the clinics and different things and see what kind of security they have out here, word of mouth will spread that it’s a pretty good place to come,” says health services patient Clarence Lewis.
Vanderbilt police plan some outreach education programs for the hundreds of employees on the 100 Oaks campus, including self defense classes and parking lot safety.

A school security guard’s quick actions land three men behind bars.
Shortly after three Tuesday afternoon, a Valdosta High school security guard smelled marijuana coming from an S-U-V.
Police say the guard then contacted an officer who pulled the vehicle over and found one-hundred grams of marijuana and a stolen assault rifle.
“I had no idea of what would happen. I basically just knew the smell and reported it to the officer, and I figured they were students. They looked young enough to be students, but they weren’t,” says Jeffrey Watson, Valdosta High School Security.
21-year-old Darius Norwood, 20-year-old Tony Duncan, and 20-year-old Katuna Gordon were all arrested.
The men face several felony charges, including possession of a firearm on school property and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Police believe the assault rifle was stolen from a home a few days before.

South Alabama man kills 9, commits suicide www.privateofficer.com

South Alabama man kills 9, commits suicide http://www.privateofficer.com

GENEVA, Alabama Mar 11 2009 (CNN) — Authorities in a southern Alabama community are trying to determine what caused a man to open fire on family members and apparent strangers on Tuesday, killing 10 people, before turning the gun on himself.I don’t think anybody has any idea of what the motive is,” said Clay King, mayor of Samson, Alabama, where some of the shootings took place. “The whole community is still in shock.”
King — who spoke to CNN’s “American Morning” — said he knew the shooter, Michael McLendon, and all of the victims.
“I coached him in both T-ball and Little League Baseball along with my two sons,” he said of the shooter.
By the time McLendon ended his rampage, he had fatally shot his mother and set fire to her house, and killed his grandparents, his aunt and uncle, the wife and child of a sheriff’s deputy, and three other people, according to King and the coroners of the two counties where the shootings occurred.
“He was shooting at just ordinary people going about their business,” said Alabama state Sen. Harri Anne Smith.
Smith represents Geneva County, where all but one of the victims were killed. Smith said she had been briefed about the incident by state and local law enforcement.
By early Wednesday, authorities were still trying to piece together the chronology of events and the motive for McLendon’s actions.
Though they have identified all the victims, they withheld releasing their names until they could notify family members.
The shooting started about 4 p.m. at a house that McLendon shared with his mother, Lisa, in the town of Kinston, near the Florida border in Coffee County.
A passerby found the house on fire and alerted authorities. Inside, firefighters found the bodies of Lisa McLendon and four dogs, said county Coroner Robert Preachers.
The mother had been shot, he said.
The gunman then went east into Geneva County. There, he shot his grandfather, grandmother, uncle and aunt as they sat on a porch in the nearby town of Samson, said Geneva Coroner Max Motley.
The wife of sheriff’s Deputy Josh Myers, who lived in a house across the street, was also killed, along with her toddler, Motley said. Both were shot.
A second child was airlifted to a hospital in Florida in critical condition, authorities said.
“I can’t describe what happened, why it happened,” Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward told CNN affiliate WTVY. “It’s just a sad day for Geneva County.”
McLendon, armed with a semiautomatic weapon, allegedly also fatally shot a man who lived in a mobile home in his family members’ yard, Motley said.
At some point, the gunman headed down state Highway 52, firing at least seven bullets into a state trooper’s car. The trooper suffered minor injuries from shattered glass.
The final two victims were a woman killed at a Big-Little Store service station off the highway and a man outside the Samson Pipe and Supply store. Both victims were apparently shot at random, authorities said.
The gunman ended up at the Reliable Metal Products plant in Geneva, where police rammed his vehicle, forcing him to get out. He fired a 30-round burst with what appeared to be an M16 rifle, grazing Police Chief Frankie Lindsey with a bullet.
“Then the subject entered the business. Within minutes, shots were heard. … Law enforcement officers found him dead,” state police Cpl. Steve Jarrett said.
The manufacturing plant is 12 miles from his mother’s house.
Sheriff’s officials say the gunman was a former employee of Reliable Metal, CNN affiliate WEAR-TV reported.
Col. Christopher Murphy, head of the Alabama Department of Public Safety, called the southern Alabama rampage “the worst that DPS has a memory of
Another mass killing occurred in southern Alabama in 2002, when Westley Devon Harris gunned down six members of his 16-year-old girlfriend’s family at their farm in Luverne. Harris was convicted and sentenced to death in 2005.

NATCHEZ MS Mar 11 2009
natchez democrat — Three new arrests have been made and three people originally arrested are facing more charges in connection with the embezzlement of nearly $18,000 in merchandise from the Natchez Walmart.
Arrests of Walmart employees began in January by the Natchez Police Department, which handed down embezzlement and felony charges based on an ongoing internal investigation by the store.
Previously, a total of six employees were arrested for allegedly stealing approximately $9,000 worth of merchandise, including electronics, food, household products and clothing.
Three of the original six employees have been arrested on several charges of shoplifting for their alleged involvement in the scam.
The employees — cashiers — allegedly scanned items without charging them, but disabled the bar code that would activate the door alarm.
They charged few items, and the employees reportedly walked off with many items for very little.
Tiffany Williams, 22, Apt. B, 426 Watts Ave. was arrested in January for allegedly embezzling $1,181.60 worth of merchandise.
She was arrested Monday on 13 misdemeanor shoplifting charges and two felony shoplifting charges.
Erica Marie Jones, 20, 38 Windy Hill Road, Roxie, turned herself in Friday on 13 misdemeanor charges and two felony charges of shoplifting.
She was originally charged with embezzlement.
Gloria McQuarters, 25, 5 John Dale Drive, the only door greeter charged, was arrested originally in January on felony shoplifting charges for allegedly taking almost $700 worth of merchandise.
She was arrested again Friday on one misdemeanor charge of shoplifting, and her husband Alexander McQuarters, 23, was arrested in connection to the scam as well and charged with felony shoplifting.
Two new suspects were charged Friday on Monday.
Daisy Bell Leonard, 53, 610 Carolina Ave., Ferriday, turned herself in on Monday. She was charged with six counts of misdemeanor shoplifting.
Jellena Ivory, 59, 165 Cloverdale Road, was arrested Friday and charged with three counts of misdemeanor shoplifting.
A total of approximately $7,500 worth of merchandise was allegedly stolen among the six employees, in addition to the approximate $9,000.
Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said police officials recovered $2,059.90 worth of merchandise from the McQuarters’ residence.
“Our evidence vault looks like a mini-Walmart now,” he said.
Information was gathered through surveillance video, interviews of other employees and checking cash registers.
Godbold said Walmart is continuing with its internal investigation.

GA. police arrest 18 in child porn case www.privateofficer.com

GA. police arrest 18 in child porn case http://www.privateofficer.com

ATLANTA GA March 11 2009
wsbtv.com — Authorities told Channel 2 Action News they executed more than 40 search warrants culminating a three-month investigation into the distribution of child pornography over the Internet in Georgia.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, along with local and federal law enforcement agencies, made 18 arrests and confiscated 74 computers by Tuesday evening in a sweep that began in the morning.
“We have made 16 arrests for people who have been distributing child pornography,” GBI Director Vernon Keenan told Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones earlier Tuesday afternoon.
Police updated the number of arrests to 18 by 6 p.m.
John Whitaker, special agent in charge of GBI’s high tech crimes investigations, said the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force detected the porn distribution ring through software tools used to find Internet users who were sharing computer files. He said the computer files consisted of child pornography ranging from nude photos to graphic videos.
Authorities told Channel 2 Action News they have arrested some high profile suspects.
“Some of the arrests we know were related to military personnel. Some that we’ve been executing search warrants on are people that were working in school systems,” said Whitaker.
The GBI is not releasing the names of the suspects or where the arrests were made.
Since distributing Internet child pornography is also a federal offense, the U.S. Attorneys Office was involved as well.
The task force is composed of 17 local law enforcement agencies and state and federal agencies, including the three Georgia U.S. attorney offices.
