Memphis security officer fires shots at carjacker www.privateofficer.com
Memphis TN Mar 14 2009
A manhunt is on for a suspect who stole a car at gunpoint in busy shopping center parking lot.
What began as your average armed robbery left behind broken glass, a busted car bumper and two victims – one of whom is a store security guard.
The victim told police he parked at the Trolley Station shopping center and began to walk into Sammy’s Men’s Store.
That’s when he noticed three men sitting in a green Suburban SUV and one of the men jumped out, armed with a gun.
The suspect demanded the man’s keys and began to steal his brown Crown Victoria.A store security guard ran out to intervene, but police say the suspect tried to run him over with the stolen car.
The guard fired two shots, shattering at least one of the Crown Vic’s windows, but the suspect got away.
Police say the armed robber fled in the stolen car down the wrong way of Interstate 240.
They lost sight of him somewhere between Getwell and Lamar.
Meantime, investigators are searching area hospitals to see if the suspect may have been injured during the confrontation.
Police think the victim’s flashy new 24-inch rims may have caught the suspect’s eyes.

T.V. thefts at Wal-Mart lands man behind bars www.privateofficer.com
Des Moines IA. March 14 2009
desmoinesregister.com
Waterloo man’s unusual way to get TVs out of Wal-Mart landed him in the Polk County Jail this week.
Willie Fitzgerald Ford, 41, was arrested and charged with second-degree theft related to a pair of August incidents at the south Des Moines Wal-Mart, 5101 S.E. 14th St.Twice during late-night hours, police say Ford took a cart full of flat-screen televisions out through the store’s garden section. He scaled a 10-foot chain-link fence, TV in hand, and dropped the TVs down to the ground one at a time.
On Aug. 1, store security camera footage shows Ford pushing a cart filled with six TVs into the garden section of the store. On Aug. 22, Ford tried the same trick with four more TVs, a police report said. The value of the 10 TVs was $3,468.Police believe the plan was for Ford to drive around to the building’s edge and steal the TVs.But off-duty police officers and Wal-Mart security on both occasions discovered the TVs with damaged boxes before Ford could make it back to the loot.
While the store recovered the TVs, Ford proved more elusive.Sgt. James Butler, working off-duty at the store, spotted the license plate number of Ford’s vehicle on Aug. 22 and requested a warrant for his arrest, the report said.Marshalltown police eventually arrested Ford on Wednesday. He was being held in the Polk County Jail on $15,680 bond.Because of the incidents, Wal-Mart has changed the way people check out some kinds of merchandise, police said.

BeBe Winans accused of domestic assault www.privateofficer.com
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Mar 13 2009 wsmv.com– A star of gospel music is accused of assaulting his ex-wife on Valentine’s Day weekend.
Debra Winans said her former husband BeBe Winans pushed her to the ground in front of their children. The two were married for 16 years before divorcing in 2003.
The alleged assault happened when BeBe Winans showed up at his ex-wife’s Nashville home and the two began arguing about custody issues. Debra and BeBe Winans have a 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son.
According to an affidavit, what started out as a “verbal altercation” turned into assault when Debra Winans was “pushed to the ground.”
Later, the Grammy-winning Gospel recording artist and judge of the Black Entertainment Television reality show Sunday Best was arrested.
“When you’re married to someone known all over the world, it has serious challenges,” said Debra Winans.
Debra Winans said people of faith are held to an even higher standard, and many Christians suffer through abuse rather than reaching out for help.
Until you realize something’s not changing, you pray all day long. The power of God is real, but one thing he’s not going to do is go against someone’s will. We make choices,” said Debra Winans.
She said she is not afraid of her former husband and hopes by speaking out she will help others.
A spokesman for BeBe Winans said the singer is in Atlanta working as a judge on a BET program. As of Thursday evening, there was no statement from BeBe Winans regarding his ex-wife’s allegations.
Debra Winans said she is working with other abuse victims in hopes of helping them find healthy solutions to their problem.

Alarm call turns into gunbattle between police and employee www.privateofficer.com
Sulphur LA. Mar 14 2009
PRESS RELEASE
According to Chief Chris Abrahams, at approximately at 8:27 pm Thursday night March 12, 2009, the Sulphur Police were called to Billy Navarre Chevrolet in Sulphur in reference to a burglar alarm.
When officers arrived at the building they saw a white male walking around inside with a flashlight and what appeared to be a semi automatic handgun.
One officer took a position where he could observe the subject and the other officer attempted to get behind a car when the subject raised his weapon and pointed it at one of the officers.
Shots were exchanged between the subject and one officer until the subject inside ran to the rear of the store.
The officers called for assistance and the subject exited the west side door of the business where he was arrested by Sulphur Police and deputies from the CPSO.
It was later learned that the subject, Jerlee Demarest of Sulphur, was an employee of Billy Navarre sent to open the business for the police when they arrived.
When Mr. Demarist arrived, he thought the police were not there so he decided to check the building himself. When he saw the police outside, he mistook them for possible burglars and pointed the gun at one of them. The other officer, believing his partner’s life was in danger fired at the subject who then returned fire at the officers.
Mr. Demarist was booked into the Sulphur City Jail for unlawful use of a weapon and was later released charges pending by the District Attorney’s Office.
No one was injured in the incident.
This incident shows that it is vitally important for business owners ortheir employees to stay out of their businesses when they have been called to come and open it for a burglar alarm. In this case, the officers arrived on one side of the building while the key holder came from the other side. Neither knew the other was there and this couldhave ended tragically.
Please, when called to open your building to be searched in an alarm call, stay out until the police come and speak with you.

Teen charged with robbery in alcohol theft www.privateofficer.com
Rocklin CA. March 14 2009

Private Officer News Network
http://www.privateofficer.com/
An 18-year-old Rocklin resident was arrested for robbery after he allegedly resisted store security personnel who had attempted to stop him for stealing alcohol.
Paul Bashe of Rocklin entered the Safeway store at 2200 Sunset Blvd. at around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 and left the store without paying for the alcohol that was hidden in his waistband. Store security personnel stopped the subject, the subject resisted and a scuffle followed.
Bystanders called 9-1-1 and Rocklin Police officers arrived to find the subject handcuffed. One of the two security personnel suffered scrapes and bruises. After an investigation, Rocklin Police arrested Bashe for robbery.
He was transported and booked into Placer County Jail. He is currently out on bail.
A petty theft, which is a misdemeanor crime, can turn into a robbery, which is a felony crime, if the subject resists lawful detention by store personnel, according to the Rocklin Police Department.

South Bay teacher arrested for student relationship www.privateofficer.com
San Jose CA. March 14 2009
Another South Bay physical education teacher was arrested on suspicion of having an inappropriate relationship with a student — the third in two weeks.
Megan Sainsbury, 31, a teacher and former coach at Prospect High School in Saratoga, was arrested Wednesday on three misdemeanor counts of “annoying or molesting” a 17-year-old student, according to court documents.
The alleged misconduct occurred between October 2007 and January 2009. According to court records, Sainsbury and the student kissed and touched, but there is no evidence they had sex. They allegedly exchanged text messages of a romantic nature. Sainsbury bought the teen gifts, including a cell phone, to allegedly entice the girl to continue their relationship, according to a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s report.
Sainsbury is out on bail and scheduled to appear in court to be formally arraigned on April 27.
Sainsbury did not return a phone call to the Mercury News.
She is the third female physical education teacher arrested in the last two weeks for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with female students. The other two teachers were arrested on felony charges because they allegedly had sexual relationships with their female students.
“You probably noticed that several teachers have been arrested on these types of charges lately,” said Santa Clara County Supervising Deputy District Attorney Mike Fletcher, head of the sexual assault team. “But
teachers are no more likely than doctors, lawyers or newspaper reporters to commit these crimes. Sex crimes affect a wide cross-section of demographics. I think it’s just a fluke.”
That said, Fletcher added that he believes the use of technology, such as texting in particular, can intensify a relationship between a coach and student that has traditionally been limited to the field.
Prospect High School Principal Diane Burbank said Sainsbury was placed “on leave” and referred all other questions to Campbell Union High School District Assistant Superintendent Ray Cutten, who was not immediately available for comment.
According to a sheriff’s report, Sainsbury stepped down as coach of the girls basketball team in October in order to pursue her studies and get a teaching credential.
Sainsbury is a Prospect alum. She was a star basketball player at the school and went on to play field hockey at UC Berkeley.
While Sainsbury’s case is a misdemeanor, the two other South Bay teachers charged recently face felony counts. Felonies are typically based on whether the victims are younger than 14, whether the suspect is ten years older than the victim and also, the physical nature of the crime.
Rita Brum, 24, a first-year teacher at Mount Pleasant High School in East San Jose, was arrested Feb. 26 for allegedly having sexual relations with a 17-year-old student. The student’s mother found a love letter detailing some of the relationship. She was released on $15,000 bail. This week, she was fired by the East Side Union High School District.
Her attorney, Edward N. Ajlouny previously told the Mercury News that his client plans to take “full responsibility” and hopes for the “best plea deal possible.”
And on March 5, Abigail Holloway, 33, was arrested in Colorado for alleged crimes that occurred when she was a teacher at Sunnyvale’s Christian prep school, Kings Academy, beginning in 2001. Holloway is fighting being extradited to Santa Clara County, where prosecutors want to charge her with 15 counts of lewd acts on a child. That case began to surface in October, when the former student, now a college student, came to her counselor to discuss her confusion and trust issues stemming for the alleged three-year sexual relationship with Holloway that started when she was 13.

Atlanta police arrested a 53-year-old man on charges he streaked naked into the lobbies of two downtown hotels earlier this month.
Police say Donald Stafford ran outside his Walton Street apartment on March 1 without a stitch of clothing.
He first ran into the Glen Hotel on Marietta Street, according to a police report. When hotel staffers called police, Stafford ran down the street and into the lobby of the nearby Omni Hotel.

Police arrested Stafford on a charge of public indecency. He also was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for a mental evaluation, the report said.

School security guard charged in robbery www.privateofficer.com
CLEVELAND OH March 14 2009
WKYC-TV — Cleveland police are investigating a Cleveland Metropolitan School District security guard on allegations of impersonating a police officer and taking part in a robbery.
The confusing scene unfolded on E. 70th Street just after 11 p.m. Thursday. Officers responded to a call of a break-in in progress and located several men and a woman lying on the floor and two men who claimed to be vice officers with the Cleveland Police Department.
After the vice officers left the scene, the men and woman inside the house told the uniformed officers that they had been robbed by the men claiming to be vice officers.
The uniformed officers later stopped a vehicle driven by a 36-year-old man that had been seen leaving the scene. The man identified himself as a security officer with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. He agreed to return to the home on E. 70th Street. The victims were unable to identify the man and police released him.
After further investigation, Cleveland Police stopped the man again. Police found a gun on the man that he failed to tell police about. The man was arrested and searched. That is when police found identification belonging to the robbery victims.
No charges have been filed, and police are still searching for that second man who claimed to have been a vice officer.
A neighbor who saw the two men enter and leave the building said the duo was quite convincing.
“They looked legit to me,” said Charles. “When I seen them run out, they looked legit to me man. They had the whole works.”
Cleveland Police are now investigating the security guard for Improper Handling of a Firearm, Kidnapping, Aggravated Burglary, Robbery, Possession of Criminal Tools and Impersonating a Police Officer, police said.
According to a school district spokeswoman, the man has been employed as a full time security officer for two years. His duties include patrolling the streets surrounding multiple schools. The district has placed the guard on administrative reassignment following the arrest.
The allegations are tough for the other 300-plus school security officers, but district leaders say they’ll cooperate fully with the investigation.
“Discipline, making sure the officers are on point and taking the right actions, is really not difficult,” said School Police Chief Lester Fultz. “We have a firm set of policies, and when you violate those policies, we will take action to make sure that we and our officers are in compliance.”

You forgot to buckle up dummy! www.privateofficer.com
BELLEVUE, Wash. March 14 2009 – You forgot to buckle up, dummy! A commuter who put a homemade dummy in the passenger seat to sneak into the car pool lane was caught Wednesday near Seattle. But it wasn’t because a cop realized the passenger was fake. Instead, the State Patrol trooper noticed the dangling belt buckle on the passenger side and suspected a seat belt violation.
Patrol spokeswoman Christina Martin told The Herald of Everett that the driver acknowledged trying to beat traffic by using the HOV lane.
He created his passenger by draping a rain jacket over plastic piping, topping it off with a Halloween mask of Gandalf, the “Lord of the Rings” wizard, a beard and a baseball cap.
The trooper issued a $124 ticket and confiscated the dummy.
