Security officer shoots, kills Memphis man http://www.privateofficer.com

MEMPHIS, TN Mar 15 2009 – A man was shot and killed behind on Lamar near Winchester around 1:00 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009. The shooting happened on the very night the club reopened after fire shut it down for a week. There have been three unsolved arsons at Cactus Jacks in less than two months. The owner says a rival club is trying to shut him down.Memphis Police say preliminary details indicate the shooting is not related to the arsons. They say a security guard shot a patron during an argument. Family members tell myEyewitnessNews.com that the victim is 36 year-old Jason Morin.
“He’s just a really good man,” says Morin’s step-sister, Dawn Roberts. “And I can’t believe he’s gone.”
Cactus Jacks owners say they initially thought the shooting was part of another attempt to burn the building down.
“Immediately,” says co-owner Darren Grimes, “we thought it was another attempt. We’ve secured all the vulnerable spots on the building. This incident happened at one of the most vulnerable spots that would shut us down for a long period of time.”
Just before the shooting, investigators say Morin was driving his truck around the back of Cactus Jacks nightclub performing donuts.
“The people here at the bar know him,” says his step-sister. “Everybody knows he likes to play. Every time he’s here he usually goes and does donuts in the hill, goes up and comes back down. Why this had to happen, I don’t understand.”
Last weekend a flaming car, with the gas pedal rigged to the floor, was sent crashing through the front door of the club. Security guards, hired to protect the property and the customers, were told to be on the look-out for any problems. So when Morin started driving erratically, the guards acted.
Morin’s step-sister says several people were in Morin’s truck when he jumped out to talk to the security guards.
“He went up towards him because this place has had a lot of problems recently,” she says. “And as he went towards him to take the gun from one of the guys, the other guy took a 9 millimeter and shot him 5 times in the chest.”
Club owners say they are sorry for Morin family. They say they need to take every safety precaution, especially when someone lunges for a security guard’s gun,. which they claim Morin did.
“Just a week ago 3 employees were nearly killed,” says Grimes. “They were two feet away from being killed inside the building. Security is our most important concern right now.”
The security officer who fired the fatal shot was taken to 201 Poplar and questioned but he has not been charged with anything. MPD has promised to beef up patrols in the area when the nightclub is open for business.
No funeral arrangements have been made for Morin who leaves behind three children.
The FBI, ATF and Memphis Fire Department are still investigating the arsons.
