A teacher with the Sleepy Eye school district is charged with criminal sexual conduct after an alleged relationship with a 16-year-old student according to local police investigators.
Police say suspicions were first raised about a month ago, when classmates noticed a student and teacher spending an unusual amount of time together. This information was on to school officials who notified police.
According to the New Ulm and Sleepy Eye Police Departments, 47 year old Calvin Clifford Collum was arrested for the crime on Tuesday, after a search warrant was executed at the school, and another at Collum’s home in New Ulm. Police say they first got wind of the situation after Collum was suspended by the school district last Friday. Senior Investigator David Borchert says, “From that point on, we followed up on it and found there was in fact something goinfg on and followed up with our own leads from there.”
Investigators said that they talked with the student and the student allegedly admitted to having sex with Collum at his house within the past two weeks.
The superintendent for Sleepy Eye Public schools Arla Dockter says that the district was following state protocol by doing their own investigation first before alerting the authorities.
Collum was arrested and booked and has been released on bail. His next court date is set for March 24th at the Brown County Courthouse.
