Three persons including a racetrack security officer suffered major injuries as a result of an alcohol-related traffic incident which occurred on the grounds of Auto Club Speedway in Fontana on Feb. 22, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.
According to CHP reports, the unidentified driver of a 2003 GMC Sierra truck did not notice a 2003 BGTEX golf cart.
The truck struck the cart, ejecting its three passengers against a chain link fence.
As a result of the accident (which occurred at about 10:20 p.m., long after the Auto Club 500 race had ended), Marjorie Darlene Bogota, 63, a security officer and two unidentified Pomona residents received major injuries.
According to Alice Reep, Bogota ‘s sister, the Montclair resident was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton , where doctors amputated one leg and inserted metal plates in the remaining one.
“Her injuries are severe, but I was told she will recover. She was taken out of ICU but remains sedated and under oxygen,” said Reep.
CHP Sgt. Tom Graham indicated that the other two victims, men ages 44 and 23, were transported to Loma Linda Medical Center for treatment.
The 61-year-old driver of the truck was arrested and booked into West Valley Detention Center . He was not injured in the incident, authorities said.

Reep said that her sister had worked at the speedway as a security guard for several years.As for the health status and identities of the other two victims, authorities said they could not give details until more information is compiled.
“The incident remains under investigation,” said Graham.

Jeremy Smart, a 29-year-old teacher at Durango High School was arrested at his home Thursday for having an alleged side job as a drug dealer.
The math teacher reportedly had marijuana and methamphetamine on him at the time of his arrest.
As of yet, authorities say there is no evidence Smart sold drugs to students.
However, he does have a criminal history that includes charges ranging from writing bad checks to drug offenses including possession of marijuana and meth.
Ironically, Smart could have been held up as an example of the ill-effects of drug use for students during his brief teaching tenure at Durango.
Students said Smart would fall asleep in class. Freshman Christopher Rivera said the teacher would “write on the board and scribble” and “fall asleep all the time.”
Another unidentified student said Smart “always looked kind of messed up and talked—he didn’t talk normal and he’d sit in his chair and fall asleep in class.”
Smart is on administrative leave while being held at the Clark County Detention Center. His bail has been set at $46,000.

A T.J. Maxx store security agent was assaulted and sprayed with a chemical agent after she confronted some shoplifters over the week-end.
Police Lt. Ron Pine said that Saturday night a group of women entered the store and two of them were spotted apparently cutting the security sensors off of a pair of shoes.
Pine says when the security officer approached the subjects, she was pushed and then sprayed in the face with an unknown chemical substance. Pine says the group continued to assault the loss prevention agent and then fled from the store.
Police said that the suspects may have possibly been in a white vehicle. Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

An illegal immigrant convicted of striking a restaurant security guard in the head with a machete was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison.
Circuit Judge A. Bonwill Shockley confirmed jurors’ recommendation that Marlon Ivan Granados-Umana of Honduras serve 10 years in prison for the July 12 attack outside Jalisco, a restaurant on Virginia Beach Boulevard.
At today’s hearing, Granados-Umana, 25, again denied being the man who swung the machete and struck the bouncer.
Shockley, however, agreed with jurors, who had reached their verdict in less than an hour. Several witnesses testified during the trial that Granados-Umana committed the attack after guards ordered him and his friends out of the restaurant for groping women in a bikini contest.

MURRAY, Ky. Mar 17 2009 (AP) – Police in western Kentucky have arrested a student teacher on charges he had sexual relations with a Calloway County High School student.
The Murray Ledger & Times reports that John “Drew” Millwood, 24, is charged with first-degree sexual abuse.
The Calloway County Sheriff’s Department says Millwood attends Murray State University and was working as a student teacher.
The Sheriff’s Department says Millwood met a female student under the age of 18 after school and drove her to a location in the county where they had sexual intercourse. Millwood was being held in the Calloway County Jail without bond.
The age of consent in Kentucky is 16, but it is illegal for a person in a position of authority to have sexual contact with a minor.

A former Austin nurse and paramedic who has since joined the U.S. Air Force has been charged in the deaths of three patients in his care at a San Antonio military hospital, officials said.
Capt. Michael Fontana, who worked at two Austin hospitals and was a paramedic for Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, administered lethal doses of medication to terminally ill patients at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, the military said today.
He faces military charges that include the “deliberate administration of lethal amounts of medication” and “conduct unbecoming of an officer for changing a medical document.” He faces a possible court martial.
According to an Air Force statement, investigators found irregularities in how Fontana administered certain lethal drugs last year. As part of the inquiry, investigators found two other similar incidents, the statement said.
“From the beginning of this investigation, our priorities have been the safety of our patients (and) respect for families involved,” the statement said.
The military did not identify the patients.
Fontana, 35, worked as a paramedic for Austin-Travis County EMS from March 2000 to May 2006 and resigned to join the military, EMS officials said. He had no disciplinary actions against him during that time and received several commendations from patients and their families, EMS spokesman Warren Hassinger said.
Fontana had once applied to work as a STAR Flight medic but was not selected, Hassinger said.
Last year, as part of their investigation, authorities questioned EMS officials who knew Fontana and requested his personnel file. Former EMS Medical Director Ed Racht at that time reviewed Fontana’s performance and found nothing suspicious, Hassinger said.
“While he was employed here, Mr. Fontana never had any clinical performance issues,” Hassinger said.
Fontana also worked as an emergency room nurse at North Austin Medical Center from August 2001 until December 2004, at which time he left voluntarily, according to St. David’s HealthCare Network, which operates the hospital. He also worked as a nurse at University Medical Center at Brackenridge between December 2004 and June 2006, said Pam Crowther, a spokeswoman for Seton Family of Hospitals.
In 2002, he was featured in an advertising campaign that showed St. David’s employees enjoying off-duty activities. Fontana was photographed in waterskiing gear.
According to public records, Fontana in 2007 was arrested and charged with racing on a highway. He was sentenced last year to deferred adjudication, a form of probation.
On his profile on Facebook, Fontana described himself as “a fun, crazy, serious (when I have to be) sarcastic, hottie.” He said that his favorite movie is “Baghdad ER” and that his favorite quote is, “Sorry, visiting hours are now over.”

– A security guard at a Miami-Dade County public school was arrested Friday on charges of lewd and lascivious acts on a child.
Marvis Capers, 35, worked full-time as a security guard at Hubert O. Sibley Elementary School. He also was employed part-time at the Bethel Gibson Community Center in South Miami.
Miami-Dade police said a child told a relative that Capers had sexually assaulted her three times over the period of a year. Police said another child might have witnessed some of the attacks.
Capers faces three charges of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 12 years of age.
Anyone who has information or whose child might have come into contact with Capers is asked to call the Miami-Dade Police Department or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).

A Rustburg Middle School teacher is in jail after his arrest Monday on sex charges.
Matthew Judd Collins, 26, of Lynchburg, was charged with taking indecent liberties with a child under the age of 15. He is being held in the Campbell County Adult Detention Center, said Capt. L.T. Guthrie of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.
Collins was in his fifth year as a physical education teacher for fifth- and sixth-grade students at Rustburg Middle, said Robert Johnson, assistant superintendent for administration for Campbell County Schools.
Johnson would not say if the child is a student at Rustburg Middle, although he did say the child was not in Collins’ class.
Guthrie said the incident, alleged to have happened between Jan. 1 and March 13, did not occur on school property.
Principal Richard Burge sent a letter home to parents today.
“I regret to inform you of an incident that has occurred involving a RMS teacher,” the letter states. “We are cooperating with the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department in an ongoing investigation regarding the inappropriate and unprofessional behavior of this teacher.
“We have taken immediate and appropriate personnel action. Due to the ongoing investigation I am not able to specifically discuss this action; however, I can assure you this individual will not return to RMS.”

wsmv.com– A high-ranking officer on Vanderbilt’s police force is facing charges, accused of flashing a woman.
John Newman was indicted last week by the Williamson County grand jury.
In December, Newman was driving on Interstate 65 in Brentwood when he allegedly exposed himself to another driver.
That woman got Newman’s plate number and called police
Newman is a commander with Vanderbilt police but wasn’t in uniform at the time.
He is currently on administrative leave.

– Police arrested a man at the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit bus terminal downtown Monday after being notified by a security guard that he had seen a man masturbating, an affidavit states.
Michael Maurice Powe, 46, of Tampa, was taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor exposure of sexual organs.
He was held at the Orient Road Jail today on $500 bail, records show.
Tampa police arrested Powe about 10:40 p.m. but was not sure why he picked that location to sexually gratify himself.
