Montana plane crash kills 14 students on ski trip www.privateofficer.com
The single engine turboprop plane crashed about 500 feet from the airport in Butte while attempting to land, said spokesman Mike Fergus. The Montana Standard reported in an online story that it crashed in Butte’s Holy Cross Cemetery.
The aircraft had departed from Oroville, Calif., and the pilot had filed a flight plan showing a destination of Bozeman. But the pilot canceled his flight plan at some point and headed for Butte, Fergus said.
Preliminary reports indicate the dead include numerous children, he said. There were no known fatalities on the ground, he added.
“We think that it was probably a ski trip for the kids,” Fergus said.
The plane was registered to Eagle Cap Leasing Inc. in Enterprise, Ore., Fergus said. He didn’t know who was operating the plane.
Calls to local authorities were not immediately returned.
Witnesses told the Standard that they saw the plane go into a nosedive into the cemetery.
Martha and Steve Guidoni, who were at a gas station across from the cemetery, said the plane “just nose-dived into the ground.”
“My husband went over there to see if he could do anything,” Martha Guidoni said.
Fergus said the Pilatus PC-12 aircraft was manufactured in 2001. He said the National Transportation Safety Board has an investigator located in Butte who was thought to be on scene. The FAA’s flight standards investigator was en route.

Labor union activist arrested for theft at IA Capitol www.privateofficer.com
Authorities say Marshall Clemons, 38, of Cedar Rapids, grabbed two women’s wallets before he was confronted by a lobbyist who witnessed the man reaching into a friend’s bag.
Records show that authorities charged Clemons with two counts of fifth-degree theft, records show.
Biden tagged along with Clemons for a day in August of 2007 while he was working at Harding Middle School in Cedar Rapids. It was part of the Service Employees International Union’s “Walk a Day in My Shoes” campaign.
A press release on the Service Employees International Union’s Web site said Clemons was an invited guest in the Biden family’s box at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August 2008.
Labor union officials acknowledged that Clemons, who is a member of the Service Employees International Union’s Local 199, was visiting the Iowa Capitol with a group of Cedar Rapids-area residents.
Retail lobbyist Jim Henter confronted Clemons after he saw the man reach into a purse owned by a fellow lobbyist.
“I told him that I saw what happened and he needed to get the cash out of his pocket and give it back to her,” Henter said.
Clemons retrieved the lobbyist’s wallet from a recycling bin and some money from his pants, Henter said.
Capitol security guard Marshall Irwin overheard part of the confrontation. Irwin questioned Henter about what happened, and the security guard followed Clemons to the ground floor and radioed the state patrol.
While waiting for a trooper, Clemons “complained he needed to use the bathroom awful bad,” Irwin said.
Clemons flushed and left the men’s room stall, with Irwin nearby. Custodian Randy Wallace then entered to clean it and spotted an object in the toilet.
Wallace fished it out, and Irwin said Wallace found a billfold that belonged to Cecilia Tomlonovic, a family planning lobbyist who said nothing was missing.
Irwin said Capitol staff then searched every waste container in the building but found no other stolen goods.

Tampa police use MySpace to track problems www.privateofficer.com
In the past, Showalter would have had to ask the girl to print out the comments and bring them in. But that day she just loaded up her own MySpace account, set up by the Tampa Police Department, and found the threat herself.
“I printed the comment out before she could take it down and brought her in, and she couldn’t deny that she was caught,” Showalter said.
The girls talked out their differences and Showalter defused a potentially violent situation.
That’s the goal for the Tampa Police Department, which took the innovative step in summer 2008 to create MySpace pages for itself and each of its 25 school resource officers, said Cpl. Scott Buchanan, senior school resource officer supervisor.
“The goal is prevention,” he said. “To get to things before they happen.”
Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said the push to have an Internet presence came after she heard a news story about how a MySpace page helped solve the murder of Chicago dermatologist David Cornbleet.
The victim’s children created a MySpace page that included surveillance video of a suspect and details of the October 2006 murder. Six months later, said the Chicago Sun-Times, a Marine in New York responded, saying he knew the killer.
McElroy and the Public Information Office created the Police Department’s main MySpace page, where public information officers post robbery surveillance videos and entries about cold case homicides and other unsolved crimes. McElroy said the page connects the police to people ages 14 to 25 who don’t watch the TV news or read the newspaper.
So far, the TPD’s MySpace page has over 300 Internet “friends,” and over 6,000 page views.
“It’s all about information sharing,” she said. “We’re riding the technology wave.”
Taking this a step further, school resource officers like Showalter have made their own pages. Buchanan says school pages, around since October, haven’t generated breaks in any major cases but he said he has hope that it will pay off in the future.
“It’s a good investigative tool, it’s just a matter of getting it out there,” he said.
Informing students about the MySpace page is the responsibility of school resource officers.
Showalter said she turned to students for help designing Liberty Middle’s TPD page because she just didn’t understand the technology. “But it’s not a bad thing because you get to meet students who aren’t in trouble and build relationships with them,” she said.
As the Web page loads, the theme song to the TV show Cops rings out, Bad boys, bad boys. Whatcha gonna do?
She recently posted a legal definition and explanation of battery, because there has been a rise in roughhousing that has parents worried.
“I put that information out there so the students can understand before it becomes a problem,” Showalter said.
Other schools use the page to spread the word about petty thefts.
In the blog section, the Sligh Middle School resource officer posted on March 18: “On 03/12/2009 there was a Laptop computer which was taken from one of the classrooms. If you have any information leading to the recovery of the laptop, contact Officer Matos or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).”
Buchanan said he requires the officers to check the pages five days a week.
So far, the only other regional departments that use MySpace are the Polk, Manatee and Sarasota County sheriff’s offices, but several said they are looking into it, including the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
“It’s another tool in our toolbox to help solve crimes,” Buchanan said.

Security officer finds shooting victim www.privateofficer.com
Police say that a security officer has found a Montgomery man who was shot to death inside his car next to the Rose Supper Club late Thursday night.
Police responded to a call at about midnight about gunshots in the area, said Capt. Keith Barnett, a police spokesman.
A security guard for the Rose Supper Club heard the shots and saw a car that had collided with a parked car on Sharp Street near Highland Avenue next to the business, Barnett said. The security officer went to assist the driver and found that he had been shot.
Police officers arrived and found Marquette Collins, 27, in the driver seat of the Chevrolet Caprice that collided with the parked car. Collins had a gunshot to his head and was pronounced dead at the scene, Barnett said.
There are no suspects, and the investigation is ongoing, Barnett said.
It is the city’s ninth homicide of the year.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Montgomery Police Department at 241-2651 or the Secret Witness line at 262-4000.

Teacher molested eight students in 2 days www.privateofficer.com
Jesse Llorente III, of Tracy, was booked into San Joaquin County Jail on eight counts of lewd acts on a child and one count of possession of child pornography after he apparently stroked the hair and back of some students at George Kelly Elementary School, 535 Mabel Josephine Drive, police said.
Last week, investigators served a search warrant at Llorente’s home on the 100 block of Ramona Way, where they found several images of child pornography on his laptop computer, police said.
Detective Nate Cogburn said Llorente acknowledged he was touching the child inappropriately and knew it was wrong at the time.
“I believe he had sexual intentions while doing the touching,” Cogburn said. “He said it fulfilled him.”
Cogburn said the touching was disclosed to school officials who brought the case to the police.
It’s the third time in the past month someone has been arrested in Tracy for possession of child pornography or lewd conduct with a child.
“I think it’s in every town,” Cogburn said. “You just have to be willing to go hunt for them and find them. I don’t think we’re any worse off than any other city, it’s just a matter of finding out what they’re doing
Unified School District officials declined to comment, citing personnel issues.
However, in a letter to Kelly School parents and guardians, Superintendent James Franco wrote Llorente has not been an active substitute since Feb. 27 after being removed from the active substitute list and is not permitted on school property.
“If your child shows signs of stress or concern regarding this event and you would like assistance from our school psychologist, please contact the Kelly School office at 209-831-5000,” Franco wrote. “Kelly School and all of our Tracy Unified schools are proud of being safe schools. The cooperation between students, parents and staff members keeps our schools safe and is important and appreciated.”
An informational meeting for parents with questions or concerns have been scheduled, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the Kelly School Library. A second meeting is scheduled at the same time and place on Friday.
Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call Tracy Police Detective Nate Cogburn at (209) 831-6617.

Shots fired by security at Waco nightclub www.privateofficer.com
His bond is set at $32,000.
Lott Police Officer Jeremiah Schults was working as a security guard at Club Alazan in Waco overnight on March 21 when he spotted a customer speeding in the parking lot.
According to Waco police, the driver rammed his vehicle into the other car, as some people were about to get inside.
Schults told Waco police he fired at the vehicle because it looked like the driver was about to run into the car again.
As the driver sped off, Schults followed in his personal car.
Waco police officers assisted in stopping the vehicle at the Garden Apartments on Robinson Drive.
The driver was arrested.
Gallegos was initially charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to stop and render aid, Waco police spokesman Steve Anderson said.
No one was hurt.
Lott Police Chief Daryl Allen said an investigation is underway to make sure the officer was in compliance with the department’s policies

Posh resort shooting leaves at least two dead www.privateofficer.com
HOT SPRINGS, Va. Mar 23 2009 – Authorities are searching the mountains of western Virginia for a man suspected of shooting and killing two of his supervisors at a posh resort.
Bath County Sheriff Larry Norfleet says they’re using helicopters, tracking dogs and roadblocks to find suspect Beacher Ferrel Hackney, who fled The Homestead resort after the shootings Saturday night.
Two kitchen workers were shot and killed around 8 p.m. Saturday at The Homestead luxury resort in the Allegheny Mountains near the
West Virginia state line, Bath County Sheriff Larry Norfleet said. No one else was injured, and hotel spokeswoman Carol Stratford said no guests were present at the scene of the shooting. She said she didn’t think guests heard the shots because a band was playing during dinner.
Suspect Beacher Ferrel Hackney fled the scene after the shootings.
Hackney was supervised by victims Ronnie Stinnett and Dwight Kerr, and all three worked in a department responsible for washing dishes, picking up trash and cleaning the kitchen. Stinnett and Kerr were shot with a semiautomatic handgun, Norfleet said.
Hackney has been charged with murder in the deaths, said Sheriff H.R. Lightner, of neighboring Highland County, who is part of the search team.
Norfleet said he didn’t know what might have caused the shooting though officials believe it was a planned act. Norfleet described the suspect as “a loner” who had worked at the hotel since 2003. “He didn’t associate with his co-workers,” the sheriff said.
Damien Maiquez, a 29-year-old kitchen worker, described the victims as outgoing and friendly. Maiquez, a cook at the resort for 12 years, said he didn’t know much about the suspect and wasn’t on duty when the killings happened. But he described the kitchen as a large, open area full of workers during the dinner service, making it likely that other employees saw the shooting.
Ex-wife Misty Kerr described Kerr as a “awesome person” who was originally from Jamaica and had worked at the Homestead since 2000. “He would have done anything for anybody,” she said from her home in Ronceverte, W.Va.
Hotel Spokeswoman Carol Stratford declined to say whether Hackney had any discipline problems or release further personal information on him or the victims. She wasn’t aware of any other violent crimes at the hotel.
“We are devastated by the events that have taken place and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those involved,” said a statement by the hotel.
The 483-room resort about 50 miles north of Roanoke was 70 percent full Saturday night, Stratford said. It traces its roots to 1766 when a wooden lodge was built at the site near hot mineral springs, and the main hotel building was completed in 1901.
Rates start at $225 a night at the hotel set among pine-covered mountains and known for its spas and golf courses.
Guests Jennifer and Kevin Bohannon of Syracuse, N.Y. had planned to stay until Wednesday but were considering cutting their trip short after the shootings. They arrived Saturday night around 11:30 and were stopped on the way into the resort by sheriff’s deputies who told them there’d been an incident but didn’t elaborate. They didn’t find out more details until they read a newspaper Sunday morning.
“I’m shocked, now that I’ve slept on it,” Jennifer Bohannon said at midday Sunday after the couple heard helicopters through the night.
Tommy and Lisa Adams of Amherst County, Va., who were visiting the grounds for the day Sunday with their children, said they have stayed at the resort several times and always found it peaceful.
“The staff was the best thing,” Lisa Adams said. “They treated us like family.”
