Security officer captures serial bank robber www.privateofficer.com
Dayton OH March 25 2009
Serial bank robber Roderick Sample walked into the U.S. Bank in downtown Dayton yesterday and handed a teller a note-”this is a robbery-give me all of the hundred dollar bills, I’ve got a weapon”.
He had done this at least three times before at other banks and it always worked.
But Tuesday morning would be different for Sample as the teller hit a silent alarm and was able to notify a security officer that a robbery was in progress.
Security officer William Kedler immediately confronted the robbery suspect and was able to detain him without incident until police arrived and took him into custody.
Police say Sadler was a wanted fugitive on parole for bank robbery and is suspected of robbing at least three banks and committing other crimes in the community before his arrest on Tuesday.Police had been looking for him for several months.
Officer Kedler said he was just doing his job and was surprised that Sampler gave up without a fight. I had him sit in a chair and stood over him until other officers got here.
Police say the quick response of Kedler in containing the suspect and preventing his escape was an act of bravery.

Police arrest 3 in Sears theft caper www.privateofficer.com
Sumter Police said three women are facing several charges after they reportedly stole tools valued at $570 from Sears at Sumter Mall and then hit an officer with a Jeep Cherokee after being confronted.
Shannon Wallace, 30, of 133 N. Charleston Road, Darlington; and Emma Dalyrymple, 57, of 3124 Sunny Point Road, Florence, were both charged with two counts of felony resisting arrest and property crimes, third offense or greater; Janice Stewart, 49, of 419 Peach St., Darlington, was charged with property crimes third offense or greater on Sunday after police said loss prevention officials with Sears at Sumter Mall called law enforcement about three women shoplifting.
A report said an officer was trying to arrest Wallace when she became combative and tried to flee the scene, striking the officer in the leg. As Wallace was being detained, Dalrymple put the Jeep Cherokee back in gear and tried again to flee the scene.
Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said Wednesday officer T. Gayle was treated and released for her injuries and is in good condition. Police said bond was set at $27,500 for Dalrymple, $25,475 for Wallace and $5,000 for Stewart, and as of late Wednesday, none of the women had posted bond and were still at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.

Williams had a key to the store and knew the alarm code but was not supposed to be at work at that time.He had entered the store and filled the trash bags and then set off the alarm.

Multi-state scam ring busted www.privateofficer.com
An arrest at a Wal-Mart in Austin, Minn., may help break a multi-state scam wide open.
Police arrested a woman who they believe tried to scam the store out of thousands of dollars. Her arrest is linked to a retail scam that stretches across several states.
Investigators say the scam has grown into a major theft ring. Once the suspects buy the merchandise with fake checks, they try to unload it before stores even know they were scammed.
Austin Police arrested 21-year-old Ashley Smith of Rochester at a Wal-Mart late Tuesday afternoon. Officers say she was trying to return close to $2,000 in merchandise bought with a bad check the day before at a store in Sauk Centre.
“An alert employee was suspicious about the return and started doing a little checking,” said Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp.
That checking revealed the Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force has been investigating a theft ring involving retail stores statewide.
Investigators say stores in Alexandria, Detroit Lakes, Pine City, Sauk Centre, Austin, Rochester, Worthington, Fairmont and even some stores in northern Iowa were all hit with the same scam. They’re all located along major interstates.
So far, investigators believe more than $50,000 in merchandise is involved.
“She knew what she wanted to do and how she wanted to do it and it was just part of an ongoing process for her,” Philipp said.
Investigators with the Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force say the crime extends beyond just Wal-Mart stores, but because of the ongoing investigation they could not release any additional details.
Smith isn’t telling investigators much but the police report details other potential suspects from all over Minnesota. So far though, no one else is in custody.
Wal-Mart didn’t want to comment on this investigation but says the arrest is likely the result of extensive training for employees in hopes of spotting fraudulent activities.
Police say Smith is being held in the Mower County Jail.

Armed transient threatens security with knife www.privateofficer.com
A transient who was given a trespass warning at a DeLand Walmart Monday afternoon returned later in the evening, armed with two knives, and got into a struggle with a security guard at the store, police said.
John Wayne Mooney, 58, faces charges of aggravated assault and trespass after warning, police said.
Mooney was told to leave the store at 1699 N. Woodland Blvd. about 4 p.m. When the security guard saw him back inside the store, he approached the man, who pulled a knife and held it against his own stomach.
The guard disarmed the man and escorted him outside, where the two began to scuffle as Mooney tried to pull another knife out of his pocket, police said. They were still fighting when police arrived and arrested Mooney.

Texas police officer arrested for bank robbery www.privateofficer.com
Sgt. Michael Tindall was arrested this morning at the FBI field office in Conroe.
According to the complaint, Tindall was off-duty and monitoring a police radio, when he allegedly walked into the bank wearing gloves, a white motorcycle helmet with a clear visor and aviator style glasses, a dark color jacked or shirt, blue jeans, white athletic shoes, carrying a black bag and demanded money, which was received in the amount of over $28,000.
Details emerging from the press conference stated Tindall was employed at that Bank part-time as a security officer. The complaint states the robber only demanded money from the bottom drawer, which did not contain “bait money” used to track robbers, which is said to be that bank’s policy and not an industry standard.
During the investigation, FBI Special Agent Soo J. Barrow reviewed surveillance video from Aug. 10, the day prior to the robbery, when a uniformed officer, identified as Tindall by CPD Task Force Officer Dorcy McGinnis, used a rear entrance that allows access to the teller area, where he lingered talking on a cell phone, and walked into the drive-through area. A review of Tindall8 0s bank account, at that bank, shows he made a deposit around that time, but the time spent in the teller area, approximately 12 minutes, far exceeded that required to have made the transaction, according to the complaint.

Accused killer of guard gets 35 yrs in prison www.privateofficer.com
pine bluff commercial.com- A man accused of killing a security guard at a lumber plant has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree murder.
Bruce Wade Pennington, 62, entered the plea Monday in the May 12 shooting death of Dorman Ray Cooper, 26.
Cooper was shot while working the guard shack at the Columbia Forest Products plant in Trumann. Pennington turned himself in the same day.
Authorities said Pennington and Cooper knew each other, and had a personal dispute unrelated to the plant. Police said at the time of the shooting that Pennington drove his pickup truck next to the guard shack, left the vehicle running, and fired two shots at Cooper.
Pennington then drove to the Trumann Police Department and turned himself in.
Cooper was shot once in the head and once in the chest at close range with a 9mm Smith & Wesson, police said.
Pennington had been charged with capital murder. The first-degree murder charge was part of a plea negotiation between Deputy Prosecutor Martin Lilly of Jonesboro and Pennington’s attorney, Paul Ford of Jonesboro.
During the court appearance, Lilly said Cooper’s family agreed with the decision to lower the charge in exchange for the guilty plea.
Pennington appeared in court, wearing a black-and-white prison jumpsuit and glasses and with his hair in a ponytail. He turned down an offer by Circuit Judge Randy Philhours to address the court.
Cooper’s sisters, Lisa Spencer and Bobbie Pharis, testified. Spencer, who stood just feet away from Pennington, said the murder has hurt the family and friends.
“The effects of what you’ve done are far reaching _ from a friend of Ray’s in Texas whose first meeting with Ray was at his funeral,” Spencer said, “to his aging mother who will never forgive herself for something all mothers must do, letting their kids assume responsibility for themselves.
“To his 2-year-old nephew, who can’t understand why Uncle Ray can’t play keep-away with him any more, to an 8-year-old niece who wondered why the man couldn’t just kill himself instead of her Uncle Ray,” Spencer said.
Philhours said Pennington must serve at least 70 percent of the sentence, or 24 1/2 years and he will be eligible for parole in 2034.
