Authorities have been investigating the theft of a large amount of money from the Loomis Amored Car company for several months and have made an arrest in the case.
Charleston County sheriff investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Joe Randall Doss, 56, of Summerville who was a Loomis employee and have charged him with grand larceny.
Doss, who is retired from the Air Force, was taken into custody and processed and has since been released from the Charleston County Detention Center on a personal recognizance bond, officials said.
Sheriff’s Office documents say Doss, an armed service technician, was one of six employees loading money bags into a van on Jan. 23 at the business’ Savage Road facility.
The six bundles of $20,000 were inside a marked, clear plastic bag that had been checked out of a vault and was waiting to be loaded with 13 other money bags.
An affidavit says Doss offered to help the others with loading the truck. One of the employees told investigators that he was inside the van when he heard a money bag hit the floor. The employee told investigators that Doss said the fallen money bag was assigned to his van and not the one they were loading. He saw Doss use his foot to push the money bag beneath a buggy out of his view, the affidavit says.
Video surveillance shows Doss picking up the bag and putting it in his jacket, the affidavit says. He walked out the front door about three minutes after loading the van and returned less than two minutes later through another door.
The Sheriff’s Office has not recovered any of the missing money, sheriff’s Maj. John Clark said.
Doss does not have a prior criminal record in South Carolina. He did not return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

Students robbed at gunpoint waiting for bus www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on March 26, 2009

OAKLAND CA Mar 26 2009 — Two men in their early 20s entered a classroom at Oakland Technical High School shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday and robbed three students at gunpoint, according to police.
DeJuan Lamont Davis, 22, and Deerick Minor, 20 — who stopped at a doughnut shop across the street from the high school before heading north on Broadway — were arrested by Oakland police at gunpoint at the Longs Drugs on Pleasant Valley Road, police said.
A security officer at the high school followed the men to Longs and gave police information that led to the arrests.
None of the high school students were injured in the robbery, which happened in a second-floor government class about 20 minutes before the school day began, said Troy Flint, a spokesman for the Oakland school district.
Flint said the robbers had taken an AC Transit bus to the North Oakland high school that morning, reportedly harassing some of the students on the way. He said they entered the school through a side gate and went into a classroom, where they threatened four students. The teacher was out of the room at the time.
Police said Davis pointed a revolver at a group of students, forcing them to hand over their iPods. Officers Murray Hoyle and Nolan Chan recovered the weapon and three music players during the arrest. Davis tried to hide the weapon, but dropped it into a rubber container, police said.
Flint said the district would conduct a threat assessment of the school and its entrances, as is the protocol following such a security breach, and that a letter would be sent to parents.
“We’re very pleased with the way the security personnel responded,” he said. “Their actions were critical to apprehending the suspects.”
Flint said the Tech students seemed to be taking the incident “in stride” and that it was possible that some had not learned about it.
Keyera Lucas-Evans, a Tech student who was not victimized in the robbery, said she was troubled that armed intruders were able to enter her school but was thankful no one was hurt, and that the school’s security and the police acted quickly to apprehend the suspects.
“It’s crazy that that would happen,” she said. “It’s kind of like you never know what kind of stuff people come to school with.”
Keyera, who co-wrote and performed a school play about the ups and downs of Oakland this year, noted that this episode of gun violence came on the heels of the slaying of four police officers over the weekend. She said the robbery caught her by surprise — in spite of herself.
“I try to remain realistic,” she said. “I mean, I live in Oakland.”

Store customer helps subdue serial shoplifter www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on March 26, 2009

Lancaster PA Mar 26 2009
A serial shoplifter accused of trying to swipe bottles of baby formula from a city store Tuesday apparently decided not to go down without a fight.
With a coat packed full of the expensive formula, David Vasquez fought employees and a customer before he was subdued on the floor of Rite-Aid at 59 N. Queen St., police said.
Vasquez, 53, punched a female customer in the face twice and shoved a female employee to the ground during the skirmish, according to police. No one was seriously injured.
When a male store manager intervened, the group was able to wrestle Vasquez to the ground until police arrived.
Vasquez was arrested and charged with felony robbery and felony retail theft. Retail theft, normally a misdemeanor, is upgraded to a felony when a defendant has three prior convictions.
Turns out, Vasquez has been stealing from stores for more than 30 years, according to investigators. Court records indicate Vasquez has been convicted or pleaded guilty to retail theft at least five times since 1976. Police in Lancaster city, Manheim and East Hempfield townships and Lititz Borough have previously charged Vasquez.
Vasquez, who most recently lived at 765 Manor St., also is charged with misdemeanor simple assault and providing a false name to police for the outburst at Rite-Aid.
About noon, according to investigators, store employees noticed a shopper was placing items inside his coat.
One of the employees confronted the man about it, and he removed two bottles
One of the employees confronted the man about it, and he removed two bottles of formula from his coat sleeve.
The employee noticed more formula was stashed in the coat and asked the shopper to come with her to the front of the store. The shopper resisted and pushed the woman to the ground, according to investigators.
When a female customer tried to intervene, the shopper — later identified as Vasquez — allegedly punched her in the face.
The store manager, who police said was much bigger than the 5-foot-8-inch, 170-pound Vasquez, then got involved. With the manager’s help, the unruly shopper was taken to the ground.
Vasquez allegedly gave an alias to police, but officers realized the name was fake when they found a bank receipt with his real name inside the man’s coat with his real name.
In all, Vasquez tried to steal four bottles of formula with a combined value of $58.16.
Investigators say he may have intended to resell the expensive formula. City police Sgt. Todd Umstead said baby formula is a hot item for retail thieves because the product carries a hefty price tag, and because of its size, is easy to stash.
Also, police said, small corner stores will buy the formula, meaning thieves can make a quick profit.
District Judge Janice Jimenez arraigned Vasquez and remanded him to Lancaster County Prison on $75,000 bail.

Bounty hunters arrested after wild chase www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on March 26, 2009

Wichita KS Mar 26 2009

http://www.privateofficer.com/
Convinced they were pursuing a fugitive, a fleet of bail bondsmen chased a tan Oldsmobile across west Wichita early this morning _ sometimes at speeds topping 100 miles an hour.
But by the time the chase ended in the Benjamin Hills neighborhood shortly before 1 a.m., the only people who went to jail were a couple of the bondsmen.
The chase began in the 2500 block of West Pawnee, police said, when five men in four pickups began pursuing the Oldsmobile 88. The driver of the car dropped a passenger off at a Quik Trip on Pawnee and raced away.
One of the pursuing pickups stopped at the convenience store, and a man from the pickup forced the passenger to the ground at gunpoint and then into his pickup before rejoining the chase.
The chase went west on Pawnee, north on Meridian past McCormick, through the neighborhood near Friends University and then north again on West Street. The Olds went east on 21st from West Street.
Alerted to the pursuit, Wichita police pulled over the pickups in the 2500 block of West Bobwhite, northwest of 21st and Amidon. Two men, ages 21 and 39, were arrested on weapons violations. The bondsman who pulled a gun on the passenger in the parking lot was also booked on suspicion of kidnapping and aggravated assault.
Neither the 32-year-old driver of the Olds nor his 31-year-old passenger was wanted for any criminal offenses, police said. It was a case of mistaken identity, they said.

Armed stalker arrested at “Dancing With The Stars” www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on March 26, 2009

Los Angeles CA Mar 26 2009
A man claiming he was “meant to be” with Shawn Johnson was arrested early Tuesday morning after trying to sneak on to the set of “Dancing With the Stars” — and cops say he had two loaded guns and duct tape in his car.

Johnson’s mother, Teri, has just filed a petition for a restraining order against the man, 34-year-old Robert O’Ryan. The restraining order seeks protection for 17-year-old Shawn, her mother, her father and her “Dancing” partner Mark Ballas.

According to documents filed by Johnson, “The LAPD searched [O'Ryan's] vehicle and located a loaded .45 handgun, a loaded shotgun, and materials classically used for kidnapping including duct tape, zip ties, and a map to the victim. Also found were love letters, clippings and other information on the victim.”

According to the documents, O’Ryan told police “He had packed all his belongings and permanently left Florida to drive out here to be with [Shawn Johnson], he believes that she speaks to him personally through the television set and through ESP and that they will have a child together, he stated he would be with her no matter what.”

According to the CBS incident report, the whole thing started Monday afternoon when a CBS employee noticed O’Ryan jumping a fence and entering a hallway in the East Studio. Private security confronted him and asked for ID — and that’s when O’Ryan produced an expired concealed weapons license. When guards asked if he had a weapon on him, O’Ryan admitted to having 2 guns in his car. At that point, the guards alerted the LAPD.

O’Ryan is currently in police custody. He was booked on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm in public and is being held on $35,000 bail

www.privateofficer.com—Pittsburgh police say that a good samaritan who had volunteered at charity fish fries at a Catholic church several times was actually a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Investigators have arrested thirty-nine-year-old Earl Larue who they say has burglarized the Epiphany Catholic Church parish five times since January.
Police say Larue was caught after a security officer patrolling the area found broken glass in a basement door and blood on the floor nearby on Tuesday.
The security officer notified police for assistance and Larue was later seen with fresh bandages on his hands and arms and couldn’t explain his injuries.
Police say Larue later admitted he was responsible for the five break-ins. Larue is in the Allegheny County Jail on burglary .

Man freezes mother to collect her Social Security checks www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on March 26, 2009

COLCHESTER, N.Y. Mar 26 2009 – State police say a 69-year-old man is charged with grand larceny and unlawful disposal of human remains after he stashed his 98-year-old mother’s dead body in a freezer so he could keep cashing her Social Security checks.

Roland Auslander also was charged with forgery and resisting arrest. He was arrested following a stakeout at his home in the Delaware County hamlet of Cooks Falls on Wednesday after eluding capture for five months.

Police discovered Herta Auslander’s body in her son’s freezer chest in October after receiving a tip that she had died more than a year earlier. An autopsy at a Binghamton hospital concluded she died of natural causes.

Police didn’t know if Auslander has a lawyer .

Woman captured trying to steal baby from NJ hospital www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on March 26, 2009

VINELAND NJ Mar 26 2009 — A city woman was arrested after she tried to sneak into the nursery at South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center and kidnap a newborn baby, police said Wednesday night.
Lisa N. Maines, 34, fled the hospital after a security guard stopped and questioned her, but was found later Wednesday morning in Millville, police said.
Maines was held in Cumberland County Jail on $50,000 bail on charges of attempted kidnapping, attempted burglary and impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Maines was dressed as a nurse and carrying two large handbags when she tried to enter the newborn nursery around 1 a.m. Wednesday, police said. She told a security guard she was a midwife, then identified herself as a Drug Enforcement Administration agent and then claimed to be a Florida state trooper, according to a police report. Maines also has a Florida address, police said.
Maines told police she went to the hospital because she wanted to “hold a baby,” but denied pretending to be a law enforcement officer, police said.
Police said they planned to obtain a search warrant for Maines’ car and the bags, which they believe contained a newborn doll.
Maines “had extensive knowledge of hospital personnel, of multiple hospitals in the area and the hospital layout,” according to the police report.
She gained access to a secure area of the Regional Medical Center and was trying to enter the nursery when she was stopped by security, police said.
Police asked anyone with information about Maines committing similar crimes in other locations to call detectives Nick Sterchle or Kristian Karcher at (856) 691-4111, ext. 4650.
