COLCHESTER, N.Y. Mar 26 2009 – State police say a 69-year-old man is charged with grand larceny and unlawful disposal of human remains after he stashed his 98-year-old mother’s dead body in a freezer so he could keep cashing her Social Security checks.

Roland Auslander also was charged with forgery and resisting arrest. He was arrested following a stakeout at his home in the Delaware County hamlet of Cooks Falls on Wednesday after eluding capture for five months.

Police discovered Herta Auslander’s body in her son’s freezer chest in October after receiving a tip that she had died more than a year earlier. An autopsy at a Binghamton hospital concluded she died of natural causes.

Police didn’t know if Auslander has a lawyer .
