March 26, 2009 Woman captured trying to steal baby from NJ hospital www.privateofficer.com
Lisa N. Maines, 34, fled the hospital after a security guard stopped and questioned her, but was found later Wednesday morning in Millville, police said.
Maines was held in Cumberland County Jail on $50,000 bail on charges of attempted kidnapping, attempted burglary and impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Maines was dressed as a nurse and carrying two large handbags when she tried to enter the newborn nursery around 1 a.m. Wednesday, police said. She told a security guard she was a midwife, then identified herself as a Drug Enforcement Administration agent and then claimed to be a Florida state trooper, according to a police report. Maines also has a Florida address, police said.
Maines told police she went to the hospital because she wanted to “hold a baby,” but denied pretending to be a law enforcement officer, police said.
Police said they planned to obtain a search warrant for Maines’ car and the bags, which they believe contained a newborn doll.
Maines “had extensive knowledge of hospital personnel, of multiple hospitals in the area and the hospital layout,” according to the police report.
She gained access to a secure area of the Regional Medical Center and was trying to enter the nursery when she was stopped by security, police said.
Police asked anyone with information about Maines committing similar crimes in other locations to call detectives Nick Sterchle or Kristian Karcher at (856) 691-4111, ext. 4650.
