Police, security subdue disorderly person at Sea-World www.privateofficer.com
orlandosentinel.com
A sweaty, shirtless man on LSD was shot with a stun gun several times after trying to enter SeaWorld Orlando without paying, according to an Orange County sheriff’s report released Wednesday.
Nicholas Casanova, 23, of Miami, wielded a more than 30-inch-wide recycling bin cover as a shield and repeatedly shouted “never, never!” during a scuffle with deputies about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Minutes before the scuffle, Deputy Christopher Barrette, a uniformed, off-duty deputy, spotted Casanova trying to enter the park without paying. He was shirtless, which is a violation of park rules, and sweated profusely, the report states.
Barrette approached him, and Casanova left. He re-entered about 5 minutes later and exited, and the deputy approached again. Casanova ignored him, so the deputy touched him on his right arm.
Casanova broke away, beginning the scuffle that would land him in the Orange County Jail.
Worried Casanova would act violently against nearby park guests, the deputy tackled him, and a security guard sat on his legs. Casanova broke free, and Barrette shocked him with a stun gun.
“Never,” Casanova said.
Barrette shot him again.
“Never,” Casanova repeated. Barrette fired once more.
“OK, OK,” Casanova replied.
But when Barrette tried to handcuff him, Casanova fought, and Barrette received a minor cut from the handcuff.
Casanova made his way to a bench near a recycling can as Barrette shocked him repeatedly, then grabbed the can’s lid and swung it at the deputy. Afterward, he ran to a rope fence and tried to jump into a nearby water feature.
Deputies used the rope to restrain Casanova. He was taken to Dr. P. Philips Hospital, where tests showed he had LSD in his bloodstream.
Casanova faces counts of battery on a law-enforcement officer, battery on a security officer, resisting an officer with violence, disorderly conduct, aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer, and assault on a licensed uniformed security officer.

Guard charged with computer thefts www.privateofficer.com
democrat news
A former security guard at a Johnstown business is accused of stealing nearly $50,000 in company computers.
And as police closed in, authorities said, he took 80 of the computers into a wooded area and set them on fire.
Nathan Patrick Binnie, 26, of Iolite Avenue, Johnstown, was charged by city detectives with burglary, arson, criminal trespass, receiving stolen property, tampering with evidence and conspiracy.
In an affidavit of probable cause, police said that 94 computers – towers, monitors, keyboards and a mouse for each – were stolen from a storage facility of Intermedia Marketing, 1003 Broad St.
Binnie was a security guard and quit after it was discovered the equipment was missing, police said.
Witnesses told police they saw a blue van in the area during the week in January when the equipment was stolen. That led police to question Binnie, who drove a blue Dodge Caravan.
At least two people said Binnie stashed some of the computers at their homes, police said.
Binnie later admitted taking the equipment, authorities said.
After news of the incident got out, he took about 80 of the machines into a wooded area behind St. Therese Roman Catholic Church on Decker Avenue and set them on fire, authorities said.
Binnie was arraigned Monday by District Judge Max Pavlovich of Richland Township, the on-call magistrate, and sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post $50,000 bond

Tulsa police, security team up to fight crime www.privateofficer.com
fox23.com
There’s a new security force in some high crime neighborhoods. It’s a partnership that officers say targets a source of the problem in many crime-ridden areas and apartment complexes.
It’s an effort between Tulsa police officers and security guards at housing complexes. Officers say its good for those who live in the complexes and those who live nearby. James Stevenson lives just doors down from one of the housing complexes in North Tulsa and knows a lot of people who live there, he says they too are fed up with violence. He says he’s lost several friends in senseless shootings, one of his friends remains in critical condition from the shooting that happened at a housing complex last week, police say an innocent victim.
“We’ve been having problems with a lot of the complexes in north Tulsa ,” says Tulsa Police Officer Heather Weakley. Officers are now expanding their efforts to take a proactive approach to stop the crime in a place where they say it often starts.
“We know a lot of the problems are from those sources,” says Weakley. “Tulsa police does strive to have a good working relationship with the complexes.”
Now officers are working with security guards at the complexes. “It makes it a lot easier they’re are eyes and ears,” says Weakley.
Aaron is the Vice-President of “Global Elite Security” he supervises more than thirty security officers in housing complexes throughout Tulsa. He’s seen the difference working together can make.
“It is helpful it does decrease on the amount of crime, drugs, and violence.” Now James and others hope it makes a difference in their community.
“I know a lot of this crimes that’s going on they can stop it,” says Stevenson.

Riding an ATV could land Alabamians in jail www.privateofficer.com
All-terrain vehicles roaring down roadsides are causing erosion and landslides and wreaking havoc on construction projects, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.
About a month ago, the department extended an offer to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office: Patrol state and federal roadways for illegal ATV driving, and ALDOT will pay the deputies’ hourly wages while they search, according to Sheriff’s Office officials
Since then, deputies have issued 43 trespassing citations to ATV drivers, according to ALDOT records as of late last week.
The citations have been for riding along Interstate 10 and the unopened portion of the new U.S. 98, according to the records.
Recently, deputies arrested three ATV drivers for trespassing. One was taken into custody for a previous warrant, and another on a drug possession charge, according to ALDOT.
“We get eight to 10 calls a day from people complaining about ATV riders,” said Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Wayne Goolsby, who oversees the ATV patrols. “And we probably make two to three arrests each weekend.”
Goolsby’s rule: “If it’s not your property or you don’t have a prior agreement, you’re not supposed to be on it.”
First-time offenders are issued a warning, and Goolsby said their names are put on a computerized list to ferret out repeat offenders. More than 400 names are on the list.
Second-time offenders are ticketed and can be arrested, Goolsby said.
ALDOT spokeswoman Rebecca Leigh White said the department is pushing enforcement in Mobile County alone because “that’s where we are predominantly seeing damage, and in our initial effort, we are concentrating on where the damage has been most severe.
Tony Harris, special assistant to ALDOT’s director, said that ATV’s have caused more than $300,000 in damage statewide so far this year.
“Damage caused by ATVs along state roadways and rights-of-way has a bottom-line impact on the taxpayers,” Harris said in a release.
In 2008, the state spent more than $100,000 to repair slope damage caused by ATVs, so there is an obvious worsening trend. That’s why we’re working with local law enforcement to prevent illegal riding and to be good fiscal and environmental stewards.”
Goolsby said, “Ninety-nine percent of people who ride ATVs are good people. But it’s that one percent that does the destruction. ALDOT may make an embankment, let’s say, and it takes months to build. ATV drivers will destroy it in three hours.”
In addition to patrolling I-10, Ala. 158 and the new U.S. 98 bypass for ALDOT, deputies also have focused enforcement ef forts along the Escatawpa River, McDonald Road and Padgett Switch Road.
Goolsby said deputies, about six to 10 a shift, ride on horseback, in boats and in vehicles to spot drivers beckoned by wooded areas, dirt roads and construction zones.
Though ALDOT just extended its hand to the Sheriff’s Office this month, Goolsby said, he and other deputies began combating illegal ATVs about three years ago after complaints began pouring in from residents whose property had been damaged.
“It’s been this way for a while,” Goolsby said. “It starts up in the spring each year and then after Labor Day, it calms down.
“Some have been riding for years, and their attitude is, ‘I didn’t do that damage, I’m just riding the trail,’” he continued. “Every one of them is actually doing the damage. They are compounding the damage.”

TSA to take over some subway security duties www.privateofficer.com
The New York Police Department is shrinking, and the department can’t hire the number of cops it would like to.
Fox 5 News has learned that help is coming from security screeners at the area airports.
They’ll be replacing some police officers in the subway who do bag searches.
But some critics say this is just another clear example that the economy has affected security.
Within the next two months, Transportation Security Administration bag screeners from Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports will be replacing most NYPD cops in the subway that screen bags for explosives.
Because of the police officer shortage, the NYPD needs to take these police officers and put them on the street to fight crime.
The TSA would not confirm this program is taking place, but did tell Fox 5 News that a program like this would not affect safety at area airports.
This is how it would work: About 30 TSA screeners a day will be pulled from the three area airports Monday through Friday to inspect bags at various subway locations throughout the city.
At each location they’ll be teamed up with one police officer instead of the two or three officers you currently see at inspection sites.
The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association is blasting the plan, saying despite the city’s financial crisis the city needs to hire more cops.
According to the PBA, the city has 4,000 fewer cops on the street than it did in 2001.
“There are not enough police officers in New York City to effectively fight crime and terrorism simultaneously and (having to implement) this kind of program is verification of that fact,” the PBA said in a statement.
Plus the union says searching bags in a subway could turn “dangerous and deadly,” which TSA screeners aren’t trained or armed to handle.
The TSA workers have had three hours of classroom training regarding legal issues and subway safety and three hours of training on the equipment used to screen bags.
Officials, the NYPD has said this not a done deal yet, even though sources have told Fox 5 that it is going to happen.

Chargers player Phillips arrested by security after assault www.privateofficer.com
sandiegoonline.com
Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips was cited for misdemeanor battery early Saturday morning after a security guard at a rooftop bar in downtown San Diego said the linebacker hit him in the face, police said.
The incident was reported about 1:25 a.m. at the Ivy Hotel on F Street, San Diego police said.
Police spokeswoman Mónica Muñoz said there was a brawl at the bar that precipitated the incident. She said neither Phillips nor any other Charger was involved in the brawl.
In a written report on the incident, San Diego police Officer J. Denny said he and another officer responded to a call about a fight at the Ivy.
Denny said that a security guard had been called to the rooftop bar to break up a fight, and that Phillips “used his right hand to hit (the guard) in the left side of his face.”
The security guard placed Phillips under citizen’s arrest for battery, Denny said, and the officer later cited Phillips and released him on his written promise to appear for a misdemeanor arraignment.
It was the second time this month that Phillips, 27, was involved in a battery incident, police said.
Officers said that on April 11, a security guard at the Stingaree club on Sixth Avenue said Phillips choked and punched him. The guard reported the incident several hours later.
Phillips was named as a suspect but was not arrested or cited, Muñoz said.
James Brennan, owner of the Stingaree, said yesterday that the April 11 incident was “blown way out of proportion” and involved Shaun Phillips’brother, not Phillips. He said the security guard has since “recanted” his statement to police that he was assaulted.
“After speaking with our security guard, he agreed that he was maybe a little out of line on what his memory was of how the incident took place, and he has since dropped the charges and moved on,” Brennan said.
Phillips yesterday denied that he had anything to do with the incident at the Ivy.
“It was somebody else’s mishap. It had nothing to do with me or my teammates,” Phillips said.
He confirmed that he received a citation and said the officer was “just doing his job based on one person’s account.”
“There is video of the whole thing, and it won’t show me anywhere in the vicinity,” Phillips said.
He also said that the incident at the Stingaree was “another misunderstanding” and pointed out he was not cited or taken into custody. He said fingers are pointed at him only because he is a “recognizable face.”
“You don’t see me in handcuffs, don’t see me in the back of a police car,” Phillips said.
Blake Marnell, 44, said he was walking home early Saturday after a late dinner following a Padres game and saw police officers outside the Ivy talking to a man in a Bentley as a security guard stood by. Marnell said he heard someone say that the car’s driver was Phillips.
When officers asked the security guard if he wanted to press charges, Marnell said the the guard said yes.
Marnell said Chargers player Shawne Merriman also was outside the hotel and he heard him talking on his cell phone, asking for someone to come to the hotel to assist them. He said he heard police officers saying to each other that Merriman was not involved.
An officer wrote the driver of the Bentley a ticket, and the driver shook hands with the officer and drove off, Marnell said.
Police then got a camera and took pictures of the security guard’s face, Marnell said.
Everything appeared orderly and businesslike, Marnell said, and he did not see police conducting any kind of sobriety tests.
Merriman said yesterday that he was called to the hotel to help a teammate, but he declined further comment.
A spokeswoman for the Ivy said the establishment had no comment.
In a statement, Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said yesterday: “It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shaun Phillips. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”
Phillips also was arrested in April 2006 for an altercation with a patrol officer in San Diego. The City Attorney’s Office declined to file charges after reviewing the case.

Deputy Skip York and Deputy Burt Lopez were shot and killed while attempting arrest a domestic violence suspect.
The deputies were following up on a domestic assault report they had taken hours earlier, and located the suspect at a gun club in Crestview. The suspect was in the parking lot standing next to his truck. Deputy Lopez and Deputy York approached the suspect, had a brief conversation with him, and then informed him he was going to be arrested. As the deputies moved to handcuff the him, he became uncooperative and began to resist arrest. Deputy York fired his Taser (conducted energy device) and hit the suspect. The suspect dropped to the ground during the five-second jolt of electricity. When the Taser cycle ended, the suspect immediately drew a concealed handgun and opened fire. Deputy Lopez was able to radio for assistance while he and Deputy York engaged the suspect in a gun battle.
During the exchange of gunfire, Deputy Lopez was mortally wounded. The suspect then climbed in his truck to escape. Deputy York pulled the passenger-side door open and jumped inside in an effort to pull the suspect from the vehicle, but was shot and mortally wounded.

Deputy Burt Lopez and Deputy Skip York were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a domestic violence suspect.
The suspect fled the scene and opened fire at deputies from the Walton County Sheriff’s Department during a vehicle pursuit. The suspect’s vehicle was rammed by deputies, causing it to flip over near the intersection of U.S. Highway 331 and U.S. 90 in DeFuniak Springs. The suspect exited the truck, and opened fire at the deputies, who returned fire, killing the suspect.
Deputies York and Lopez were airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. They succumbed to their injuries later in the day.
Deputy Lopez had served with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office for six years. He is survived by his wife and children.
