School guard accused of assault www.privateofficer.com
Police are investigating an accusation by a male middle school student that he was assaulted and scratched by the school security guard around 11 a.m. Thursday. A police report of the incident was not made until 8:40 that night according to police records. It was up to the victim, not the school, to approach police, police said today, and the family was deciding whether to press charges.
Police said the investigation was very preliminary and would not comment on it. No one has been charged with anything, police said.
Police are getting the videotapes from the school today to review, Detective Ray Andolina said.
The guard was immediately dismissed from school grounds after the alleged incident, middle school principal Anthony Bongo said this morning.
The woman, an employee of New Rochelle schools, is suspended until further investigation resolves the accusation, Skau said. Skau did not know if the guard was suspended with pay or without pay.

Authorities arrived and investigated and said that they arrested Audreanna Roberts, 18; Dominique Taylor, 18; Lasinda Stout, 31; and Daveisha Johnson, 23, all of Marshall, who all remained jailed Tuesday afternoon on a $5,000 bond each, charged with engaging in organized criminal activity.
According to an arrest report, a Longview police officer responded on Monday to the Wal-Mart in the 2400 block of Gilmer Road after store security reported they observed four women attempt to steal about $865 in merchandise.
The security officer said Roberts was employed as a cashier and that she had scanned a few of the items selected by the other three women before placing most of the merchandise in bags without scanning them. The women paid about $40 for all of the items. According to the report, loss prevention nabbed the group as they left the premises with the unpaid merchandise while management rounded up the cashier.
All have charged in this incident and the cashier could face additional charges in other incidents.

Brinks guard arrested in theft case www.privateofficer.com
mercurynews — A former Brinks guard is accused of stealing bags of bank deposits after picking up the money up at Montgomery County retail stores and an office building.
James Edward Wilson, 24, was employed to provide protection for Brinks’ armored car drivers and pick up money bags at various retail stores. But when the company discovered the money in bags he was given at stores were at odds with what he turned in to Brinks, the company became suspicious, according to a criminal complaint.
On Feb. 18, 2008, Wilson allegedly picked up three deposits at the Gap store in Willow Grove Park Mall in Abington, including a bag that contained $2,232.01 that was to be delivered to Bank of America.
According to authorities, Gap store managers logged the pickups incorrectly, skipping spaces in the log book and confusing the pickup order. The missing deposit was signed for 11 days later by a Brinks guard instead of the actual bags he received from the Gap that day.
After Gap reviewed its time line, deposit slips and Brinks log, the retailer determined the missing deposit was picked up Feb. 18 after all, and surveillance video allegedly showed that Wilson took three deposit bags from the store during the stop but only signed for two of them, according to the criminal complaint.
The third bag that was not signed for, but allegedly seen in Wilson’s possession, never arrived at Brinks’ headquarters in Philadelphia.
On April 7, 2008, a Brinks truck stopped at Dick’s Sporting Goods, at 2510 Moreland Road, in Willow Grove, to make a pickup. The store’s log showed that Wilson had signed for two deposit bags, but a surveillance camera showed he actually picked up five bags, authorities said. The missing bag reportedly contained $9,283.91.
“He was a person that the company trusted to pick up and put money in the bank, and instead he pocketed the money,” said county prosecutor Anthony Gil, who works with the district attorney’s Office of Economic Crimes Unit.
Investigators have accused Wilson of taking money from a Montgomery County office tenant and stealing funds meant for New Jersey banks.
“There are three other incidents where money was missing: two in Toms River, N.J., and one in Lower Merion,” he said.
Last April, a $5,895 deposit was allegedly taken by Wilson from 2 Bala Plaza in Bala Cynwyd, but never delivered to Brinks’ headquarters.
Wilson was the “lone guard” working at the rear of the armored vehicles in each of the suspicious incidents, authorities said. Currently, the defendant is out after posting a $10,000 bail.
“He didn’t have a prior criminal record,” Gil said.
None of the missing money, which totals more than $21,610, has been recovered.

Dallas crossing guard killed by DUI driver www.privaterofficer.com
cbsnews.com A 71-year-old school crossing guard died Tuesday morning after he was struck walking to his vehicle at the end of his morning shift.
According to witnesses, Franklin Lester had just helped a woman and her baby cross the street in the 1300 block of S. Denley Drive near Lynn Haven and was walking to his SUV when he was hit. Roger Q. Mills Elementary is the nearest school to this intersection.
He just led us across the street,” say Jana Hays. “He was telling me, ‘You the last one to get across the street.’”
Both men were taken to the hospital, where the elderly man died.
Police say the driver of the car that struck Lester, Peter Nelson, was drunk at the time of the crash. Police have charged Nelson with intoxication manslaughter.
“He was going so fast!” says Cici Parks. She said the car hit Lester in the back and the impact slammed him into a utility pole. He was pinned between the SUV and the car.
Don Lester says his father loved his job and had been a crossing guard since 2005. “He took his job as being so important to him. He knew that particular spot was a dangerous one because there are a couple of blind spots,” he said.
Nelson lives a few blocks away from the scene. He remains in critical condition at Methodist Medical Center.
Nelson’s sister said he has been under a lot of stress lately. They just lost their mom a few days ago and plan on burying her Monday.
“We are so sorry,” Helen Ford said. “We are deeply sorry to the Lester family.”
Jason Clark, Public Information Officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, says Nelson has served time in state prison for delivery of cocaine. Clark also says he was released from an intermediate sanction facility on March 27 and reported to his parole officer yesterday. Intermediate sanction facilities are minimum security institutions for parolees who commit relatively minor violations.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office says Nelson has also been charged with several violations in a handful of North Texas cities during the past eight years.
One of the victims was taken to an area hospital as a precaution

Fake hotel security guards rob Fla. tourists www.privateofficer.com
The incident happened about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday near the Florida Turnpike and U.S. 1 in south Miami-Dade County.
According to investigators, Randall Carlson, 58, from Fairbanks, Alaska —who is legally blind — and Patricia Gerondakis, 53, from Jackson, Wyoming were in their rental car trying to find their hotel when they were assisted by a man known only as Leon.
Police say Leon got in their rental car and helped them locate the hotel along the 10700 block of Caribbean Boulevard and helped them carry luggage to their room.
Later, police say, Leon and two accomplices returned to the hotel and knocked on the couple’s door — identifying themselves as hotel security.
The three men then forced their way inside, tied up Carlson and Gerondakis and took cash, cell phones and other personal property before fleeing in their rental car, according to police.
The rental car is identified as a black 2008 4-door Ford Focus with the tag K222RD.
No one was hurt during the incident, but Gerondakis was taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation.
The couple told police they were at the hotel after visiting the Florida Keys.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).

Atlanta police converge on violent neighborhoods www.privateofficer.com
Officers from several different police agencies Wednesday night in a coordinated effort to combat what many are calling an increase in violent crime hit several neighborhoods hard, pulling over cars, checking people for outstanding warrants, and sweeping crime ridden streets.
Atlanta police, along with officers from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department and Georgia State University police, fanned out across the city Wednesday.
Officer’s targeted so-called hot spots or zones were crime is frequent looking for trouble and wanted fugitives.
Authorities said they made over 70 arrests in their hours on the streets and that it was executed based on the success on past operations.
Police also said that criminals can look for similar operations through-out the summer as police work to combat the increase in violent street crimes.

Three men take over, rob Loomis guards www.privateofficer.com
Three armed men dressed in black and wearing Halloween masks robbed two Loomis armored car guards. It happened in the parking lot of the Bank of America on Old Bridge Road in Woodbridge, Virginia.
FOX 5 has learned the thieves managed to get away with a large amount of cash. The Loomis employees were not hurt. The gunmen ran into a nearby wooded area and disappeared.
Officers discovered a stolen van right next to the scene of the crime. Detectives are trying to determine if the three gunmen arrived in the van and waited inside until the armored car pulled into the parking lot to load an ATM.
The heist was captured by a bank security camera, but because the men covered their faces and hands there is no lookout information at this time.

NYC security union threatens to strike www.privateofficer.com
The unarmed guards at Allied Barton are newly represented by SEIU Local 32BJ, which says they deserve more than their average $11.35 hourly wage.
“Security officers protecting city buildings should not be struggling to get by,” said Matt Nerzig, spokesman for 32BJ SEIU.
“These officers deserve the living wage, training and health care they need.”
The union warned Allied Barton this week that it “intends to commence strike, picketing and/or work stoppage activities” within 45 days.
Allied Barton said it is bargaining in good faith, and expects to resolve the dispute.
“We are confident that the union shares our concern for the safety and security of these assets and will work with us toward a mutually beneficial and peaceful resolution to our bargaining process,” said vice president Alan Stein.
Allied Barton was paid $23 million in the past nine months for security services at sites all over the city.
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services declined to comment, but a source said the agency would set up a contingency plan if a strike appeared likely.

Shoplifting charge elevated to robbery after assault www.privateofficer.com
By: Rick McCann
Private Officer News Network
http://www.privateofficer.com/ – A shoplifting gone bad has landed a 33-year-old man from Seymour in jail charged with robbery and larceny.
Police say that Kevin Henry is accused of stealing about $160 worth of batteries and cold medicine from the Newtown Road store about 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
When two store security officers attempted to stop him outside the store, police say that Henry started swinging and that use of force in the commission of his theft is what elevated his charges to robbery officers said.
Henry was held on a $10,000 bond pending a court arraignment Wednesday in Danbury.
Thieves often target small, expensive items such as razor blades, batteries and cold medicine to resell for a profit on the black market to other stores, according to police.

Man who faked his death arrested in Vegas casino scam www.privateofficer.com
ocregister.com A man police say faked his own death to avoid arrest last year was arrested in Las Vegas this week, after Nevada Gaming Board police said they observed him cheating at a table game in the MGM Grand Casino.
John Sung Park, 29, disappeared after diving with friends off of the Laguna Beach coast last September. When rescuers failed to find any trace of the missing man, authorities said they assumed the Buena Park resident’s body was trapped under water – possibly in one of any number of underwater caves near Laguna Beach.
But, after a series of odd details surrounding Park’s disappearance began to emerge – including a report that Park had traveled to Los Angeles County to steal back his recently sold Mercedes-Benz – police suspected that the man may have faked his death to evade warrants in cases related to possession of a controlled substance, receiving stolen property and second-degree burglary.
Park may now face further charges in Laguna, too.
“When he eventually comes back to California, we will be interviewing him and possibly looking at charging him with faking an emergency – along with handing him a bill for the monies we expended while looking for him,” Sgt. Jason Kravetz said.
Laguna expended about $50,000 in resources while searching for Park’s body, Kravetz said at the time, including fire boats, helicopters, snorkelers and dive teams.
Park may also face further charges in Nevada, related to allegations that casino security witnessed Park fraudulently placing extra bets in his pile after a game’s outcome had been determined, Nevada Gaming Board Police Chief Jerry Markling explained.
Park also attempted to flee after officers notified him that they had found warrants on his record, he said.
“We had made contact with him, but it wasn’t until he realized … we knew that he was wanted elsewhere that he ran,” Markling said.
Park is being held in Clark County Jail without bail and faces an extradition hearing at 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
He could be on a bus back to California in a matter of weeks, a Clark County court spokesman said.

Teacher, ROTC instructor charged with indencent liberties with student www.privateofficer.com
Ayden Police say retired Army Sergeant Joseph Mitchell was charged with indecent liberties with a student. The Ayden-Grifton High School teacher is still employed with the district despite the criminal charges police have brought against him.
Pitt County Schools Public Information Officer Heather Mayo, “The individual is on suspension with pay in which he has been since March 10th, 2009 and that is the day the allegation was brought to the principal.“
Mayo says Joseph Mitchell’s status with the school district will stay that way until the legal process is complete. Two days after the district found out about the allegation they turned the case over to Ayden Police.
Chief Tim Moseley says, “After we talked with several witnesses and students we took our findings to the D.A.‘s office and advised us to charge the individual.“
Moseley says the incident involves a 14-year-old student and that he’s not aware of any other students being involved.
Moseley says, “He picked her up at a public location here in Ayden, went to her home and in fact went inside her home and there was some inappropriate touching- allegedly.“
Mitchell has been with Pitt County Schools since January 2008 and Ayden Police say they have not dealt with him in the past.
Moseley says, “It’s inappropriate, Pitt County Schools is aware it’s inappropriate. They took the case very seriously from the beginning, it’s just totally inappropriate.“
Mitchell is scheduled to appear on the felony charge Thursday morning. Since Mitchell is charged with a felony, according to pending legislation, if convicted, Mitchell would have to register as a sex offender if the bill becomes law. A substitute teacher has taken over Mitchell’s classes and the head JROTC instructor is helping out, as well, according to Mayo.
