Man charged after fighting with security www.privateofficer.com

DESTIN Fla April 14 2009
nwfdailynews.com – A Fort Walton Beach man faces battery and disorderly conduct charges after an altercation with security guards at Club Overboard in Destin.
According to the arrest report, Mark Triplett – who has multiple prior convictions for batteries – was breaking beer bottles on the ground inside the club.
When a security guard asked him to leave, Triplett pushed the guard against a wall and tried to hit him.
He then began running around, trying to get away from other security guards, the report continues. When he was caught, he resisted their efforts to restrain him and elbowed two of the guards in the face.
The security guards held him on the ground outside the establishment until a deputy arrived.
Another man was standing nearby while the deputy was trying to take Triplett into custody, according to his arrest report, and the deputy repeatedly asked him to back up. The man refused to comply until the deputy removed a baton from his belt and informed him that he was under arrest.
The man now faces a charge of resisting an officer.

Teenage shoplifter tried to strangle security agent www.privateofficer.com

ENFIELD CT April 14 2009 — Police say they arrested a 15-year-old boy over the weekend who they say was caught shoplifting and who tried to strangle a female security officer at the Macy’s department store in the Enfield Square mall.

Deputy Chief Anjo Timmerman said police were summoned to the men’s department at Macy’s around 4 p.m. Saturday when mall security officers tried to apprehend the shoplifting suspect.
The boy struggled with a female loss prevention officer and tried to strangle her even as other security officers tried to help her apprehend him, Timmerman said. When police officers arrived a little later, the boy struggled with them as well, according to the deputy chief.

The teen was charged with third-degree robbery, first-degree reckless endangerment, interfering with police, breach of peace, third-degree assault, third-degree strangulation, and sixth-degree larceny.
Timmerman said the boy was turned over to his mother after the arrest and referred to juvenile court in Vernon. The female security officer suffered minor injuries during the struggle, he said.

Police say a man who dashed past security guards at an upscale midtown Manhattan apartment building has died in an apparently accidental plunge into its trash compactor.

Police say the 34-year-old ran into the apartment tower, a few blocks west of the Empire State Building, shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday. He took off and fled security and hopped on an elevator and took it to the 36th-floor roof level according to officers.

Police say he then apparently fell or accidentally jumped into a chute leading from the 35th floor to the garbage compactor 28 stories below. He was found dead inside it.
Police and fire personnel could not revive the man and police are investigating but at this time say it was an accidental death.

Alabama police use scrap wood for fuel www.privateofficer.com

Hoover AL April 14 2009
al.com
A Livingston plant has converted wood scraps trucked from Hoover into ethanol that will be used for the first time Thursday to fuel some of the city’s police vehicles.
Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos and Gulf Coast Energy CEO and President Mark Warner hail the development as groundbreaking in the conversion of wood waste to automotive fuel on a small commercial scale and in making the west Alabama demonstration plant a leader in advanced biofuel technology that uses wood to make clean-burning fuel.
By Thursday, the city will receive 100 gallons of fuel for use as E85, which is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, from the Sumter County plant. Warner believes this is the first commercial transaction in the country, even though the amount is small, to come through “cellulosic gasification
We wanted to get there and show everybody we can do this in this country,” Warner said. “The model works.”
Petelos said he believes this is the first time in this country’s history where municipal wood waste has been converted into liquid fuel. “It’s not only huge for Hoover, it’s huge for this country.”
The U.S. Department of Energy, through a spokeswoman, said this type of ethanol, known as cellulose-based, has been produced from wood waste before, including at a plant in Rome, N.Y. The department said there has not been any large-scale commercial production of ethanol from wood in this country and that a full-fledged commercial plant would produce at least 10 million gallons of biofuels per year.
However, Hoover’s use of cellulose-based ethanol could be considered a first in some respects, the spokeswoman said.
David Bransby, an Auburn University professor of energy crops and bioenergy in the school’s agriculture department, said the feat of turning the wood waste into ethanol for Hoover shows Gulf Coast is making good progress for a demonstration plant.
“I think it’s another landmark,” Bransby said. “It’s a major achievement. The next step is commercial.”
Firm seeks funding
Warner said efforts are under way to raise funding for a full-scale commercial plant. The plan is for plants to be built in Livingston, metropolitan Birmingham and south Alabama.
The 100 gallons coming this week will be used to fill five Chevrolet Tahoes during a Thursday news conference that is expected to be attended by elected officials such as U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions and U.S. Rep. Artur Davis.
Davis said the partnership between Hoover and Gulf Coast has the potential to produce significant economic development. The Black Belt needs a new job source because conventional manufacturing jobs will not be as plentiful. Alternative energy has the potential to become a lifeline, making the Black Belt the alternative energy belt, Davis said. The state should invest in alternative fuel as it did for the automotive industry, he said.
Petelos said he hopes the company will decide on a location for a permanent plant so Hoover can continue to work with it. The city generates about 1,800 tons of wood waste a year, enough to produce about 350,000 gallons of ethanol, Petelos has said. The city uses roughly 240,000 gallons of E85 fuel a year.
Fuel experts said fuel from wood waste is considered the next generation of biofuel. Most of the country’s biofuel facilities are first-generation, making ethanol from corn and other food crops.
Phillip Wiedmeyer, chairman and president of the Alabama Clean Fuels Coalition, said such fuel can reduce dependence on foreign oil, bring in economic development and help protect the environment.
Petelos acknowledges the amount of fuel to be accepted Thursday is small.
“This is only 100 gallons,” Petelos said, “but it’s the beginning of a new process, not only for the city of Hoover, but this entire country.”

Security agent stabbed during shoplifting incident www.privateofficer.com

Denver CO April 14 2009
Three Westminster High School students were arrested April 3 for allegedly assaulting a security guard. One of the teens involved in the incident, a 17-year-old male, allegedly stabbed the security guard in the leg during the scuffle.
Police say three teens were stopped at 8:53 a.m. by a security guard at Wal-Mart, 7155 Sheridan Blvd., because he suspected they had stolen some items.
The teens attempted to run away, but the guard grabbed the 17-year-old in a “bear hug,” according to witnesses.
The teen then brandished a knife and stabbed the guard before another security officer could detain him.
One of the teens involved in the incident escaped, but was later tracked down and arrested once police learned his identity.
They were booked on suspicion of aggravated robbery armed with a deadly weapon.
They attempted to steal lunch meat and cheese, according to the report.
