Shoplifter kills security officer with own gun www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on April 15, 2009

EAST ST. LOUIS April 15 2009 — A grocery store security guard died Tuesday afternoon after a suspected shoplifter grabbed his gun and shot him twice, East St. Louis police said.
A suspect from East St. Louis was in police custody. The shooting was at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Schnucks supermarket, 2511 State St.
“The security guard, who has not yet been identified, was dealing with what police believe was a shoplifter,” said Illinois State Police Lt. Jim Morrisey. “While dealing with this individual in the back of the store, there was a confrontation, which resulted in the security guard being shot.”

As the guard was taking the man into a back room to hold him until police arrived, the man grabbed the security guard’s gun and shot the guard in the eye. The suspect fled the store but was later caught by police.
The security guard died at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital, Morrisey said.

Shoplifters nabbed in theft incidents www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on April 15, 2009

EAST GREENBUSH NY April 15 2009 — Two men were arrested and charged with stealing, including one man who attempted to use his step-daughter’s baby stroller to stash his loot.

Miguel Angel Rodriguez, 20, allegedly filled various compartments in his two-year-old step-daughter’s stroller with over $1,000 in video games before walking out of Hollywood Video Friday afternoon, police said.

Rodriguez, who lives in an Albany homeless mission, was then confronted by the shopkeeper of the Rensselaer County Plaza store, who snatched the discs back and contacted police. But Rodriguez fled into the adjacent Wal-Mart instead of waiting for authorities to arrive, police said.

He was tracked by the shopkeeper and police to the sporting goods section, where he was arrested in front of numerous shoppers still pushing the girl in the stroller, police said.

Rodriguez was charged with attempted grand larceny and acting in a manner injurious to a child. He was released on bail and will return to court on April 23.

Meanwhile on Friday afternoon, John W. Halancy, 19, of 25 Lindberg Ave. in Rensselaer, allegedly shoplifted a hand tool from Wal-Mart on Route 4 in the East Greenbush. The potential charge of petit larceny was elevated to robbery when Halancy allegedly pushed a security guard who confronted him about the incident.

Halancy then fled the store and hopped in a Dodge Neon driven by another person, pushing numerous other customers on his way out, according to police.

Teacher charged with sexual assaults on 3 students www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on April 15, 2009

WORCESTER MA April 15 2009 AP— A local charter school teacher was arrested yesterday morning on charges of indecent assault and battery, allegedly involving three former students.

Kyle Soule, 32, of 76 Myrtle Ave., Webster, a fifth-grade teacher at Seven Hills Charter Public School, was arraigned in Worcester Central District Court yesterday on three charges of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

According to police, the charges stem from assaults of three girls, starting in 2002, when Mr. Soule was a teacher at Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School. Police Sgt. Kerry F. Hazelhurst said that early last month, one of the girls, now 14, was talking with someone at school about getting tutoring. Mr. Soule’s name came up as a possible tutor, and the girl balked, eventually mentioning that he had inappropriately touched her in 2002.

The girl’s allegations started an investigation that led to Mr. Soule’s arrest. Sgt. Hazelhurst said police investigated Mr. Soule several years ago, when another girl accused Mr. Soule of wrongdoing. No charges came out of that investigation until now.

Timothy J. Connolly, spokesman for Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr., said that girl’s family decided not to move forward with the case at the time. Mr. Connolly said yesterday’s charges involved assaults that allegedly occurred in 2002 and 2004.

In court yesterday, there was some confusion about the number of alleged victims and Mr. Soule’s legal representation. Judge Steven A. Thomas said it looked to him as if all three charges were related to the same girl. Judge Thomas set bail at $2,000 cash, and continued the case to May 7 for further arraignment. Mr. Soule was also ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim or the victim’s family.

However, police and the district attorney’s office later said the charges involve three girls.

Robert Iacovelli, Mr. Soule’s court-appointed lawyer, said Mr. Soule requested representation by Petter L. Ettenberg.

Mr. Iacovelli said that when Mr. Soule first learned he was being investigated several years ago, Mr. Ettenberg represented him. Mr. Soule later agreed to Mr. Iacovelli’s representation for the duration of the bail hearing.

Neither Seven Hills Principal Gerald Yung nor Superintendent Krista Piazza could be reached last night for comment.

The patrol says John Hoffman was arrested Friday and faces a charge of sexual assault of a child.

Casino player arrested after refusing to leave www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on April 15, 2009

Gary IN April 15 2009
After three days of around-the-clock gambling, Alexis Robinson was ordered to leave the Majestic Star casino.
But when a security guard told her early Monday she couldn’t return until that afternoon, “She just stared at him,” her arrest report states.

Robinson, 23, of Chicago, was arrested after the guard and Gary police Cpl. Michael Barnes gave her one final chance to leave, but she didn’t.
She continued to stand silently, until the officers arrested her, court records state.
“I didn’t want to argue with them,” Robinson told Gary City Court Judge Pro Tem Itsia Rivera on Monday morning.

Robinson was charged with criminal trespass. Rivera entered a not-guilty plea on her behalf, then questioned her about the incident.
Although the woman admitted she had been told not to return until 3 p.m., “I didn’t have papers stating that,” she said.

Robinson said she had been gambling almost continuously “like three days,” and told the judge she’d been in the casino the entire time without taking a break at the nearby hotel.
“You have a gambling problem,” Rivera said.

“If I do, then I have to change,” Robinson said.
When Rivera told her she’d need $300 to bond out of jail, she asked if she could leave to go get it.
“I’m trying to get my son out of the hospital,” Robinson said.
“You were not with any sick baby,” the judge retorted.
Her trial is set for June 15.

Casino employees capture wanted felon www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on April 15, 2009

Tunica MS April 15 2009
fox news memphis
“I was just dealing, talking and laughing with my guests, I looked up and said ‘oh my God’.”
Normally Bailey says she was dealing craps at the Horseshoe Casino in Tunica Sunday night when she spotted one of the Mid-South’s Most Wanted women, sitting down to play blackjack.
“She was walking down the aisle and had a baseball cap on and dark glasses. I said she’s trying to hide, that’s her!”
The woman she spotted was 37-year old Cassandra Henry. As FOX13 reported Thursday, Henry was wanted in 3 states for sweet talking her way into homes and stealing credit cards and money from the elderly.
Bailey says she’s delt to her before.
“She was talking and smiled and turned around, she’s got a silver tooth, I said ‘that’s her!’ I leaned over and said ‘you gotta call the police, call Crime Stoppers right now, that’s the lady, that’s the lady.’”
The dealer told security she saw Henry on FOX13. Security called, our assignment desk emailed them Henry’s photo, and deputies matched it up and took her away.
According to Will Calder with Horseshoe Security, “she had no ID, she said. She was denying she was the person we were asking about and gave several names… they continued to question her until she finally admitted she was the person she was looking for.”
Police in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi think Henry’s been preying on the elderly for years.
Investigators just identified her a few weeks ago, but haven’t been able to find her.
“I think [Bailey's] ability to recognize the person is amazing,” said Calder.
“We are trained to watch people at all times. Even though I’m looking at you, I’m still seeing everything going on in my peripheral vision. We watch people all the time, job security/game security that’s what we do,” said Bailey.
Bailey says she’s had her own credit cards and identity stolen. She’s glad to play a part in putting a suspected thief behind bars.
“I feel great! I was able to have a hand at putting her behind bars. I’ve been a victim, I know what it takes to get your credit back, and she needs to get off the streets.”
Henry had $400 in chips she was able to cash out before being taken into custody. She reportedly told the officer she was going to use it to pay bond.
However, it won’t be enough – she’s being held on a $150,000 bond.

Shoplifters leave behind their pictures www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on April 15, 2009

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. April 15 2009 Packets of recently developed pictures that were abandoned in carts of stolen merchandise at a Wal-Mart Supercenter in St. Lucie West helped officials track down two alleged thieves, according to a police report released Friday.
A self-checkout cashier on Thursday noticed that two women reportedly scanned and paid for $70 worth of goods, but that the bagged groceries in their carts appeared worth much more.
When the self-checkout cashier asked to see their receipt, the women took off.
Store officials found almost $200 worth of items that hadn’t been scanned or paid for, including razors, vitamins and “other small items” stashed in a previously opened box of Summer’s Eve Douche.
The store official also found two packages of recently developed pictures.
The self-checkout cashier identified women in the photos as the two who fled when asked for their receipt.
Christy McGaw’s name and phone number were on the envelopes, and she returned to the store when called. Tammy Sharp, 37, came with her and admitted being with McGaw, 40, when the self-checkout cashier tried to stop them.
McGaw, on probation following an earlier retail theft conviction, said she left to get more money from her car but decided to leave after realizing she’d left her wallet and money at home.
Sharp denied knowing unscanned items were in the carts.
Both list the same home address in the 1800 block of Southeast Manth Lane and both are listed as unemployed.
Each faces a retail theft charge.

Morehead KY April 15 2009
A 32-year-old Salt Lick woman was arrested Friday for shoplifting after she shoved a Wal-Mart employee who allegedly caught her stealing several items from the store.

Cassie A. McCarty posted a $1,000 bond Saturday and was released from the Carter County Detention Center on charges of second-degree robbery and possession of a controlled substance, said Morehead Police Chief Mike Adams.

“We responded about 8:15 p.m. to a report of an altercation in the parking lot of Wal-Mart,” Adams commented Thursday. “When the suspect tried to leave the store without paying, she pushed and shoved the employee.”

An undisclosed amount of stolen items were recovered. Police did not say what controlled substance McCarty was allegedly found with. The incident remains under investigation by Patrolman Wes Coldiron and Brad Gillock.

Babysitter sleeps on toilet; 2 yr old sneaks outside www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on April 15, 2009

PORT ST. LUCIE Fla April 15 2009 — As the babysitter slept on the toilet Friday afternoon, the 2-year-old boy in her care wandered out the door and along the bank of a canal where two alligators had been spotted, a police spokesman said.

The child was recovered safely and returned to his mother, while the babysitter, identified as 26-year-old Brandy Albright, was taken to jail on a child neglect charge, said Officer Tom Nichols, police spokesman.

Albright reportedly lives in one part of an efficiency in the 2300 block of Southeast Seafury Lane, while the mother and the boy live in the other.

A witness found the boy around 2 p.m. and called 911. Police somehow determined the child came from the efficiency, and an officer went in the open door and found Albright sleeping on the commode.

No other information was immediately available.

Student killed in teacher love triangle www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on April 15, 2009

CHANDLER, Ariz. April 15 2009— An 18-year-old high school student caught with his 48-year-old math teacher in her bedroom was stabbed to death by her boyfriend, who was himself a former student of hers, police said Tuesday.
Chandler police said 20-year-old Sixto Balbuena told them he never meant to kill Samuel Valdivia. He allegedly told police “the blade went in like going into butter” and that he just wanted to show Valdivia how much he hurt him by sleeping with Tamara Hofmann
Balbuena, a Navy sailor on leave from California, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder after police found him covered in blood and told them about the killing. He remained jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond on Tuesday and did not yet have a lawyer.
Balbuena found his girlfriend naked and Valdivia in his boxer shorts in the woman’s bedroom around 2:40 a.m. Friday, according to police reports and court documents.
Balbuena told police that Valdivia apologized to him before Balbuena began kicking, punching and throwing things at him, according to a police probable cause statement.
Police said Balbuena told them he “wanted to teach the victim a lesson,” and stabbed him in the lower side with a kitchen knife, according to the court document. Valdivia later died at a hospital.
He also threw Hofmann to the floor jumped on top of her and demanded to know how long she had been cheating on him, according to the document.
Police said Hofmann taught Valdivia math at El Dorado High School in Chandler and was also Balbuena’s teacher when he attended Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe.
A call to both schools was not immediately returned Tuesday. Hofmann’s phone number is unlisted.
Balbuena is the one who called 911. He told officers he felt remorse for stabbing Valdivia after seeing him lying on the floor struggling to breathe, police said.
Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Favazzo said Hofmann is being investigated for potential misconduct relative to her involvement with Valdivia.
A 2006 Chandler police report obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday shows that police suspected Hofmann of having a sexual relationship with a then-17-year-old Balbuena.
Both Hofmann and Balbuena denied being in a sexual relationship, and police closed the case.
