TWIN FALLS ID April 24 2009 — A Jerome woman has been arrested for attempting to pass counterfeit $5 bills that were altered to look like $100 bills.
Jonna Cheyenne Monge, 24, was booked into the Twin Falls County Jail while the U.S. Secret Service continues to investigate.
Police say the phony money was found in Jerome and Twin Falls.
The Twin Falls Police were by Jerome Police that counterfeit bills were in circulation in the city of Jerome.
Twin Falls Police received phone calls from two Magic Valley Mall merchants that claimed Monge tried to pass fake bills that were $5 bills on one side but made to look like $100 bills on the other side.
The merchant used a detector pen on the bill, but the watermark came up as President Lincoln — or that of a $5 bill, and the security thread was a $5 bill.
When Monge was arrested, police recovered 14 bogus bills.
The bills recovered in Jerome would have been worth thousands of dollars, if they had actually been $100 bills, according to Twin Falls Police Detective David Heidemann.
Police are urging local merchants to check large denominations for security features. They should use a detector pen, and also check the other security features such as the security threads and watermarks, which are unique to each denomination.
