Gunman kills Wesleyan University employee www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. May 7 2009– Middletown police continued to search for a gunman Wednesday afternoon after a female student was fatally shot in the Wesleyan University bookstore.

The shooting took place at about 1 p.m. inside the Broad Street Book Store, police said.

The victim was shot multiple times, police said. They said she was transported to Middlesex Hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The shooting involved the victim and her boyfriend, who entered the book store wearing a wig and carrying a gun, police said. They said the victim worked at the bookstore café.

Police said they recovered the gun and the wig and know the identity of the suspect.

The shooting forced police to close Broad Street between College and Williams streets. Broad Street reopened at about 3 p.m., but Williams Street near the library remained closed.

As a precaution, university officials enacted the school’s emergency plan, asking that all students and staff immediately get indoors and remain there until further notice.

With assistance from the superintendent of schools, police said, all Middletown public and private schools were locked down immediately after the shooting until the end of the school day as a precautionary measure. They said the students were released as usual at the end of the day.

Police said the Street Crimes Unit and a K-9 unit were called to the scene. They said a half-mile perimeter was set up around the area.

All events at Wesleyan scheduled for Wednesday, including the Spring Fling, were canceled as a result of the shooting.

Police said the identity of the victim was being withheld until her family was notified.

Private Officer News Network
http://www.privateofficer.com/ – Police are investigating an apparent accidental shooting that has left a security officer dead.
The security guard, who police have not yet identified was employed by Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club said Det. Kim McAfee.
Steven Harris of Cahokia was in a van in the club parking lot about 12:30 am Saturday with a woman who told police that Harris took out his gun and she asked him to put it away. When he did, he somehow accidentally shot himself in the chest, McAfee said.
Harris, who was in his 30s, did not have a valid Firearm Identification Owner’s card, which is required to own a gun in Illinois. Police do not suspect foul play.

Police officer, security thwart attack on school www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

Silver Springs MD May 7 2009
When a Springbrook High School student allegedly told Officer Rodney Barnes that he and another student planned to destroy the school, the Montgomery County police officer responded in his self-described “low-key” manner.
The reception from school staff at the Silver Spring school has been anything but.
At a faculty meeting Monday afternoon, Springbrook Principal Michael Durso commended Barnes and school security for their efforts to foil the alleged plot.
“We certainly got lucky this time,” he said at the meeting. “Someone was looking out for us in addition to Mr. Barnes.”
After Durso spoke, Barnes said he was just doing his job. “It could not have occurred without the diligence of staff and security,” he told the audience.
Last week, Durso praised school officials for foiling an alleged attack by two Springbrook students at the Silver Spring school.
Barnes said the six-person security team at Springbrook knew the two students had been frequently truant and Yonata Getachew, 18, left school April 28 without being apprehended. Barnes stopped Anthony Nelson Torrence, 17, of the 13500 block of Greencastle Ridge Terrace of Burtonsville, who he had known previously as “not a bad kid,” and said he had an “alarming” conversation with him, where Torrence allegedly disclosed their plans.
“Everything took off running from there,” Barnes, who then contacted county detectives, said April 29.
Getachew of the 11500 block of Sutherland Hill Way in Silver Spring was arrested at his home April 28.
Both were charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, three counts of first-degree arson, conspiracy to manufacture or possess a destructive device and reckless endangerment.
“There have been little things throughout the school year and this has begun to tie things [together],” Barnes said last week. “It wasn’t something over the last couple weeks.”
Durso said a factor in foiling the alleged attack was trust between the teenager and a police officer.
“Some students have not had a good police experience,” Durso said. “Some parents haven’t [either].”
Many teens have problems going to the police, Durso said, so it helps when there’s someone they can trust like Barnes.
A former detective, Barnes has 25 years of police experience and has patrolled Springbrook for four and a half years.
“[Barnes] is as effective with his job as anyone I have seen,” said Durso, who said students gravitate toward Barnes. “He’s down to earth [and] easy to talk to.”
After the meeting, Barnes described the nature of his job and how it can all change with one meeting with a student.
“You can be Attila the Hun if you want,” Barnes outside the school’s cafeteria. “But that attitude won’t be what you [need] in a moment of notice.”
Longtime Springbrook teacher Joyce Amatucci taught Barnes when she taught at High Point High School in Beltsville in the 1970s.
“He doesn’t push things aside – he takes things serious,” she said. “It paid off.”
As Amatucci kept an eye on students during test time Thursday, she said April 29, the day after the students were arrested, was just another day at Springbrook thanks to Barnes and the school’s security team. She added that she doubted the students could have successfully implemented the attack.
“The day went totally normally,” Amatucci said. “It’s a testament to the students.”

Off-duty Atlanta officer working security shoots man www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

ATLANTA GA May 7 2009 — An Atlanta police officer working an off-duty security job at a downtown Atlanta apartment complex shot a man in the face Tuesday night.
The officer told investigators he noticed the man, identifed as Tramaine Miller, 27, in a park known for drug sales near the City Views Apartments on Richardson Street. When he tried to question Miller, he ran to his car, the officer said.
The officer approached the Dodge Charger with his weapon drawn and ordered Miller to put his hands in the air.
“The subject reached under the seat of the car and the officer felt threatened,” Lt. Keith Meadows of the Atlanta Police Department told Channel 2 Action News.
The officer opened fire, hitting Miller in the face.
Miller was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Police found a cell phone in Miller’s hand at the hospital.
Miller’s father said Miller was at the apartment complex to check on a sick aunt.
Meadows said the officer was placed on a firearm review pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Deputy dead, 3 others injured in crash www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

Beauregard County LA May 7 2009
A sheriff’s detective is dead and three deputies injured after a major crash Tuesday afternoon. Their suburban collided with an 18-wheeler on Highway 1 South.
The Beauregard sheriff’s department is mourning the loss of one of their own. While doctors watch over three injured deputies.
It’s a massive crash, leaving a sheriff’s detective dead. “It kind of shook me. For a moment, I had to get myself together,” Lt. Darwin Jones, with Caddo Sheriff Department said.
Officials say a suburban with four Beauregard sheriff employees collided with an 18 wheeler at HW 1 South, killing Detective Robert Beane, a 14 year veteran. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Detective Beane’s family who leaves behind a wife and child” Chief Deputy Joe Toler of Beauregard sheriff department said.
By air and land, crews rushed three other victims to LSU health sciences. “He’s with family and friends and his wife is here and I think he’ll pull through.” Officials say deputy Dale Sharpe, who rode in the passenger seat is in critical condition. Deputies Lance Grant and Brian Leedom are stable.
Just before the crash, all four attended a tactical training conference. “It hits home, I just met these guys yesterday but I feel like I lost a brother.”
A crowd of support marched to the hospital. Jones says 20 law enforcement agencies visited, while others called. “I’ve had calls from as far away as New Orleans asking what they can do. It’s a tragic event and what you’re seeing is a great outpour for these guys.”
Officials say the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but there were many witnesses. Also, that the driver of the 18 wheeler is OK.

North Carolina police department shutdown, officers arrested www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

SPRING LAKE NC May 7 2009
fayetteobservor.com — The Spring Lake Police Department was stripped of its remaining police powers Monday, and two of its officers were arrested.
Sgt. Alfonzo Devone Whittington Jr. and Sgt. Darryl Eugene Coulter Sr. were arrested after being indicted by a special Cumberland County grand jury.
About midafternoon, Sheriff Moose Butler and District Attorney Ed Grannis met with Police Chief A.C. Brown and Town Manager Larry Faison to discuss the action being taken against the Police Department.
They delivered an order from Chief District Court Judge Beth Keever saying that all criminal work within the town, including misdemeanors, would be handled by the Sheriff’s Office.
Grannis also said he plans to dismiss all pending misdemeanor cases filed by Spring Lake officers and will evaluate pending felony cases.
The action, which Grannis later called unprecedented, has in effect stripped Spring Lake police of any remaining powers.
The Sheriff’s Office set up a mobile command unit at the Spring Lake Family Resource Center on Odell Road. Butler said roughly four deputies on rotating shifts will work out of that location.
Starting today, all emergency calls in the town will be forwarded to the Sheriff’s Office. Residents who need assistance should call 323-1500.
Butler could not say how long his officers would handle Spring Lake’s investigations.
“We’re stretched, but we’re going to be here till the issue’s resolved,” he said.
Butler and Grannis met with four members of the county Board of Commissioners behind closed doors following Monday’s arrests.
After the hour-long meeting, board Chairwoman Jeannette Council said the commissioners support Butler providing law enforcement for Spring Lake residents until at least June 3. Council said the county can afford the expense without a special appropriation.
After June 3, the commissioners urged Spring Lake officials to contract with the sheriff to continue the service until town leaders reconstitute the Police Department “as a fully functioning law enforcement agency.”
Late Monday, many Spring Lake officers said they did not know whether they should show up for work today or what the future holds for them.
Town leaders evaded those questions Monday.
“Give us a little time,” Mayor Ethel Clark said before leaving Town Hall. “We’re still formalizing a plan.”
Brown remained in his office after Grannis and Butler left and would not answer questions from reporters. He surfaced briefly to check his vehicle and said, “I got a hot one,” before going back inside.
Faison referred all questions to a news release he said he faxed. He then slipped out of Town Hall to avoid reporters waiting at the rear of the building. The Observer did not receive a fax.
2 officers charged
Whittington, who joined the department in October 2005, was charged with 11 crimes, including embezzlement by public officer, obtaining property by false pretenses, larceny and obstruction of justice. The charges stem from $2,900 that was allegedly taken from the department’s evidence room. Whittington, who also served as the department’s evidence custodian and internal affairs investigator, allegedly took the money between September and January, according to the indictment. He then directed officers to alter reports and lie about the handling of the money. His bail was set at $100,000.
Coulter, who has been with the department since July 1999, was charged with 20 crimes, including breaking and entering, second-degree kidnapping and obstruction of justice.
The charges stem from an April 27, 2008, incident at a home on the 400 block of Vass Road.
According to the indictments, Coulter broke into the home, which was occupied by Mark Anthony Jones Jr., Jimmy Jovan Taylor and Samuel Darnell Wallace. He assaulted the men and forcibly removed them from the home while threatening them with a handgun and a shotgun, kidnapped them and then held them against their will by handcuffing the men.
The indictments allege that Coulter, while supervising three officers also involved in the false arrests, had no legal justification for the actions.
Coulter also was indicted for his alleged actions during an investigation at the Sleep Inn Motel. According to the indictment, Coulter lied when he said he smelled marijuana in a room from which officers seized $2,900. That’s the same money that Whittington is accused of later taking from the evidence room. His bail was set at $250,000.
Both officers appeared before Senior Resident Superior Court Judge E. Lynn Johnson about 4:30 p.m. They were escorted into the courtroom by agents with the State Bureau of Investigation. Johnson read the charges against them and told them the maximum penalty they face for each.
According to Johnson, Whittington could face 24 years, two months in prison if convicted on all charges. Coulter could face 32 years, four months in prison.
Whittington said he planned to hire his own lawyer. Coulter asked for a court-appointed lawyer, which the judge said would have to come from outside the county’s public defender’s office.
String of problems
Monday’s arrests are the latest in a string of problems for the Police Department.
In a letter to the county’s two top judges Monday, Grannis said he first realized the department had troubles in December 2006. It was at that time, the District Attorney’s Office learned Spring Lake officers mishandled child abuse allegations and the subsequent death investigation of 3-year-old Anijah Burr.
He later asked that all homicides be investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and then expanded that request to include all felonies.
In mid-2007, Grannis said he asked the SBI to conduct a criminal inquiry into the department’s narcotics division.
An independent assessment of the department, done at the request of the town Board of Aldermen in late 2007, found a number of problems, including a lack of training for officers, a lack of written directives and the leadership of Brown.
Originally, Grannis said he was concerned that the department lacked trained manpower and expertise. Now, he said, he has a much deeper concern.
Grannis wrote that the department still was under investigation by state agents.
He said the SBI’s report made him “genuinely disheartened” and that many of the questions raised in the report came from officers within the department.
“Within our democratic society, we entrust law enforcement with significant authority and responsibility in carrying out our criminal laws,” he wrote. “… This report raises genuine questions concerning the entrusting of such significant responsibilities to the Spring Lake Police Department

Teacher charged with lewd communications with student www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

JUPITER, FL May 7 2009–Jupiter Police have arrested a former teacher at Jupiter Christian School after investigators discovered inappropriate messages sent to one of her student over the popular networking website MySpace.

Police say Geneva Henry had been sending lewd messages to a 14-year-old student through MySpace since December 2008. The student was a freshman in Henry’s English class.

An investigation into the claim revealed that the student felt he could talk to Henry about anything and the two began talking on MySpace a short time before Christmas. About two months into the friendship the student began to get messages of a sexual nature.

The student saved the messages into a word document for the investigator.

When administrators from Jupiter Christian School confronted Geneva Henry, before the police investigation, Ms. Henry resigned from her position and confessed to sending the messages.

The student also told the investigator that Henry had written poems about the student saying that she got “butterflies in her stomach every time he walked by.”

Henry surrender herself at the Palm Beach County Jail today where she will be charged with lewd and lascivious conduct.

Off-duty officer aids in capture of shoplifter www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

Jefferson IN May 7 2009
news&tribune.com
A Jeffersonville man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly shoplifting at the Target store along State Street in New Albany and then leading police on a car chase with an 11-month-old child in the back seat.

Jesse Malott, 23, of Jeffersonville, was arrested for felony charges of theft and resisting law enforcement in a vehicle as well as criminal recklessness and endangering a child, New Albany Police Department Sgt. Todd Bailey said.

NAPD received a call at about 2:20 p.m. in reference to a shoplifter who was witnessed by security officers taking items.

An off-duty NAPD officer heard about the shoplifting on his police radio and pursued the suspect, who ran from the officer, Bailey said. Malott then fled in a black Mazda with a female in the passenger seat before eventually stopping in the parking lot behind the Kroger location along Charlestown Road.

The female surrendered and was handcuffed, while Malott took off across Silver Creek before being arrested.

Bailey said the woman was taken to the police station for questioning, but was being treated as a witness and would not be charged with a crime at this time. Charges could be filed later.

She is the mother of the infant child, and the grandfather arrived at the scene to pick up the baby. The relationship between Malott and the woman was not known.

Bailey said that the vehicle was traveling faster than the speed limit and broke numerous traffic laws.

“We didn’t realize there was a child in the car until after the chase was over,” Bailey said. “It was extraordinarily dangerous for the child.”

Child Protective Services will investigate who should be given short-term custody of the child, NAPD Capt. Keith Whitlow said.

Convicted attorney who bilked elderly clients now charged with shoplifting www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

FARMINGTON CT May 7 2009
hartfordcourant.com— A former lawyer convicted of bilking thousands from her elderly clients and her New Britain law firm to support her lavish lifestyle was arrested for allegedly shoplifting a $1,300 designer handbag Monday, police said.

Elizabeth Zembko, 48, of 11 Townsend Road spent 15 months in prison for stealing $400,000 from her New Britain law firm Ericson, Scalise & Mangan and $137,000 from various clients, including the elderly.

She was released in 2007 and ordered to pay restitution to the clients. She has already paid back the law firm and was required to give up her license to practice law. Court papers said Zembko spent much of the money on fur coats, jewelry, adding a pool to her Farmington home and other luxuries, including expensive cars and vacations.

Police said Zembko was spotted by Nordstrom security personnel leaving Westfarms mall Monday afternoon with a $1,395 Michael Kors handbag that she allegedly pilfered.
When local police arrived to investigate they discovered two more stolen bags in the car bringing the total value of the merchandise to $1,891, Lt. William Tyler said.

“The security personnel followed her to her car and confronted her,” he said. “When our officer arrived he noticed two more purses behind the driver’s seat and asked if they belonged to the store.”

According to a warrant for her arrest on a violation of probation charge served April 20, to date, she’s paid $1,200 in restitution to the clients and has not made a payment in over a year.

Zembko told her probation officer she couldn’t afford to pay the 60 installments at $832 each, the warrant said.

She was released on $10,000 bond on the probation charge and scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court on that charge May 11.

Police charged Zembko with third-degree larceny Monday. She was released on $5,000 nonsurety bond and scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court May 12.

Caretaker charged in child’s death www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

CAYCE, SC May 7 2009(WIS) – The Department of Social Services-appointed caretaker of a nine-month-old boy is being charged months after deputies say she taped a pacifier into the child’s mouth, killing him.
SLED arrested 30-year-old Angela Deniece Dukes at around 6:30pm Wednesday and charged her with unlawful conduct towards a child.
Dukes had been given custody of Curtis Williams on February 7, after Williams’ mother, Katrina Jivers, was arrested for smoking pot with Williams and Jivers’ two-year-old daughter in the room.
Both kids were taken into DSS custody. Cayce police say cocaine was found in the 2-year-old daughter’s system. The son, Williams, tested posted for marijuana.
Williams died less than 24 hours after Dukes took custody.
SLED officials say Dukes taped a pacifier into the child’s mouth, which obstructed his breathing and resulted in his death.
Coroner Gary Watts tells WIS News 10 he reported Williams’ death as possibly suspicious, and that’s what began the investigation.
At the time of the child’s death, Jivers’ family claimed there was more to the story than Jivers’ drug use.
“Instead of saying, ‘hey we made a mistake,’ they’re trying to stick her with something to cover themselves, cover their tracks,” said Jivers’ uncle, Rossevelt Jivers.
We talked to the grandmother of the baby, who saw him in the hospital before DSS took him. She says the family has been suspicious of what happened ever since.
“There was nothing wrong with him. There wasn’t any thing wrong with him, so you wouldn’t expect to hear something like that, but it was the most heartbreaking thing I ever heard,” says Shirley Jivers.
Cayce police insisted they followed protocol at the time, but so far they’ve made no statement concerning the newest developments.
There’s also been no response from the Department of Social Services, who placed the child in Dukes’ care.
Shirley Jivers says she isn’t receiving this news easily, knowing her other granddaughter, the two-year-old, is still in DSS custody herself.
She says Katrina Jivers is also receiving this news, and that she bonded out of jail about a month ago.
Officials say Dukes, who is a neonatal nurse at a local hospital, is at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn’t immediately clear if she had an attorney.

Former NASCAR driver Kevin Grubb found dead in hotel www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

Richmond VA May 7 2009
richmondtimesdispatch
Kevin Grubb, whose NASCAR career was cut short because of alleged substance abuse, was found dead yesterday morning at a motel in Henrico County.
According to a Henrico police spokesman, personnel at Alpine Motel on the 7000 block of Brook Road discovered the Mechanicsville native in his room at about 11 a.m. Investigators did not speculate on the cause of death.
“Right now, it’s an ongoing death investigation,” said Henrico police Lt. Richard Cosby. “There doesn’t appear to be anything unusual or suspicious [at the crime scene].”
Cosby said further details concerning Grubb’s death are expected today.
Grubb, 31, was suspended indefinitely in September 2006 for failing to comply with NASCAR’s substance-abuse policy while competing in the then-Busch Series (now Nationwide). He was suspended for refusing to submit to required testing following a race at Richmond International Raceway.
That had been Grubb’s second violation of the sport’s drug policy for reinstatement. He was first suspended in March 2004 for testing positive for banned substances. He was reinstated to drive in June 2006, with part of the conditions being an agreement that he submit to periodic drug testing at anytime.
“He would not submit to a drug test. We even gave him some time to think about it,” NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter told reporters in 2006.
Grubb and brother Wayne were NASCAR drivers. Their father, W.O. Grubb, helped launch their careers with Grubb Motorsports. Kevin Grubb’s career began with NASCAR’s lower-tier series in 1997.
Grubb’s only attempt in NASCAR Sprint Cup series came in 2002 in the Pontiac Excitement 400 at RIR. He failed to qualify with the No.54 Team Bristol Motorsports Chevrolet.

Women arrested for assaulting officers www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

Pottsman PA May 7 2009

Two Pottstown women were arrested early Wednesday after they fought with a Muhlenberg Township policeman and a state constable who came to the aid of a bouncer at a township bar, police said.

Amada Islas, 21, kicked Constable Elliot C. Kreimendahl twice in the groin and bit him three times after he pulled her off Muhlenberg Patrolman Jason Walters, who was trying to arrest her friend Casey Malloy, 23, outside Legends Sports Bar along the Fifth Street Highway, investigators said.

According to court records:

Walters was conducting a routine security check near the bar about 12:20 a.m. when he saw a disturbance around the bar entrance.

He saw Malloy punching the chest of a bouncer, who was trying to throw her out of the bar for being unruly. The bouncer’s name was unavailable.

When Walters tried to arrest Malloy, she started punching him in the head.

Kreimendahl, who was in the bar, tried to pull her away from the officer and was bitten by Islas, who then kicked him in the groin. It was unclear if Kreimendahl was at the bar as part of his official duties.

Both women were subdued and taken into custody.

Muhlenberg District Judge Dean R. Patton arraigned both women on charges of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

Islas was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail, and Malloy was committed to the prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Man dies in altercation with security officer www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on May 7, 2009

TRENTON NJ May 7 2009 — A Maryland man who was involved in an altercation with a security guard outside a city bar Saturday night has died of his injuries, police said yesterday.
Homicide detectives reported they are investigating the death of Luis Hernandez, 33, who they said died Monday afternoon from a wound to his head caused when he fell to the sidewalk after being struck by bouncer Daniel Hanson, 37. Police said that initial reports appear to indicate a drunken Hernandez struck Hanson first, and that Hanson defended himself
“If we find otherwise … of course we would look at criminal charges if the evidence supported it,” Capt. Joe Juniak said.
Shortly after 9:15 p.m. Hernandez attempted to enter the Ilusiones Bar on the 700 block of Roebling Avenue, police said. Juniak said the bar was busy, the norm for a Saturday night, but the sidewalk outside was not crowded. It is unknown if Hernandez arrived alone or with others.
At the door was Hanson, who police said works for a local security company and not the bar. Police said Hanson, noticing an “apparent high state of intoxication” on Hernandez’s part, refused to allow him inside.
Police said Hernandez became angry and the two began to argue. According to police, Hernandez punched Hanson in the face. Hanson then punched Hernandez, causing Hernandez to fall backward and hit the back of his head on the sidewalk, according to police.
Juniak said police are conducting interviews and reviewing video surveillance. An autopsy will be conducted, and toxicology results will be rushed to determine whether there were any alcohol or drugs involved.
Police spokesman Sgt. Pedro Medina said Hanson had been questioned by police, was never in custody, and so far has not had any charges filed against him.
Juniak refused to go into specifics on Hernandez’s or Hanson’s height and weight.
“Regardless of the size of the bouncer, the bottom line is we have to know what initiated the altercation between the two,” Juniak said.
Hernandez was rushed to Capital Health at Fuld Saturday night, where he was diagnosed with a cranial hemorrhage. He died at 2:45 p.m. Monday. Hanson was not treated for any injuries, police said.
Attempts to contact Hernandez’s family or Hanson last night were unsuccessful. A phone number listed for the bar has been disconnected.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding Hernandez’s death to call Detective Michael Terman at (609) 989-4131, or the Trenton Police Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
“In order to determine any culpability, you have to look at the totality of what happened,” Medina said
