Armored car guard shot during robbery www.privateofficer.com

Charleston SC May 24 2009
An armored security car employee narrowly escaped a bullet to the head Saturdaymorning after he made a money pickup at Citadel Mall in West Ashley.
The Brink’s Inc. employee was leaving the building about 11:30 a.m. when a gunman approached him, robbed him and fired one shot at him, police said. The bullet grazed his head, Charleston police legal adviser Mark Bourdon said. The man was treated and released from a hospital.
The gunman was black, had dreadlocks and was about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 150 pounds. He left as a passenger in a getaway vehicle. Police would not describe the vehicle or say how much money the robber stole.
The robbery occurred at a service entrance near J.C. Penney. It was the fourth shooting at the mall in less than three years.
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fired back in November 2008 during a shootout in the J.C. Penney parking lot that left 27-year-old Begondae Moore dead.
In September 2007, a Charleston police officer shot and killed a man during an afternoon drug bust in the J.C. Penney parking lot. Jeroid Ferguson, 26, of North Charleston, died after being shot while trying to flee in a car and striking an officer with the car.
Christmas shoppers scattered during gunfire near the food court in December 2006. The shooting began about 7 p.m. in the men’s bathroom, where a man was shot in the foot.
Shopping center parking lots, where criminals can blend in, have
come a favored spot for drug deals in recent years.
Angie Watts and Cherie Bergeron sat in the mall parking lot near the shooting scene Saturday afternoon, sharing photographs with each other before going inside to take advantage of Memorial Day weekend sales.
“I grew up in Charleston, and I always thought Citadel Mall was one of the safer areas,” Watts said.
Bergeron said she might start parking on the other side of the mall.
“It’s scary,” she said of the shootings. “We might as well go to Northwoods (Mall).”
Brink’s offices were closed Saturday, and Citadel Mall officials did not respond to a request for comment.

ATLANTA GA May 24 2009 — The FBI says a 50-year-old security guard has been charged in connection with a bomb threat at the Georgia Department of Labor building in Atlanta.
FBI special agent Gregory Jones says Robert Lamar Thompson of Covington faces charges involving the false report of a bomb last Friday.

Chicago police officer charged in DUI hit and run death www.privateofficer.com

Chicago IL May 24 2009
chicagotribune.com
A veteran Chicago police officer was charged Saturday in the fatal hit-and-run that killed a 13-year-old boy who had sneaked outside to ride his bike with friends on the South Side Friday.

Richard Bolling, 39, of the 8600 block of South Wolcott Avenue was charged Saturday with aggravated driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a wreck where a death or injury occurred, and reckless homicide in the death of Trenton Booker, said Sally Daly, spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Bolling, a 17-year veteran assigned to the department’s narcotics and gang investigation section, allegedly had been at a bar earlier in the evening, Daly said. Arresting officers saw an open bottle of beer in Bolling’s Dodge Charger and conducted a field sobriety test, said Daly, who did not have the test results.

The boy’s father, Terrence Booker, said Saturday police told the family that Bolling failed a Breathalyzer test. Booker, 40, said he welcomed the charges.
If he hadn’t killed my son, he would’ve killed somebody else,” he said. “They told us he was going 80 m.p.h. I’m just too upset myself to talk.”

Trenton, who family said sneaked out of his home, was riding with a friend on Ashland Avenue north in a southbound lane near 81st Street at about 1:30 a.m. Bolling was driving his car in a southbound lane, and according to witness accounts went through the intersection at a high rate of speed and hit Trenton, who ended up sprawled on the street, Daly said.

Bolling allegedly continued without stopping.

He was arrested minutes later after two Chicago police officers saw the car about five blocks away going the wrong way down a one-way street.

They also noticed that the car had damage to the bumper and windshield, Daly said.

Officials said Bolling, who is due in Bond Court on Sunday, has been stripped of his police powers. No one answered the door at his home Saturday.

Police refused to confirm the officer’s name or duties, alleging that the police union contract prohibits them.

The family has not made funeral arrangements.
