Philly nightclub security officer killed www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

PHILADELPHIA PA June 2 2009 (AP) — Police say the step-grandson of boxing great Joe Frazier has been fatally shot in a North Philadelphia bar.
Police say 25-year-old Peter Lyde Jr. was working as a security guard when he was struck by a bullet during an argument involving a patron, a bartender and two other people around 1:20 a.m. Sunday at the Pleasures On The Ridge Tavern.
Lyde was pronounced dead about a half hour later at a hospital. He was the son of Peter Lyde Sr. who is married to Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge Jacqui Frazier-Lyde, Joe Frazier’s daughter.
Dozens of friends and family gathered outside Judge Frazier- Lyde’s house Sunday evening.
The family released a statement on Sunday saying they were devastated.
No arrests have been made.

Security officer shot at Maryland nightclub www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

Capital Heights MD June 2 2009
Three men posed for a picture early this morning inside a legendary Prince George’s County nightclub, the Ebony Inn. They flashed wads of fake cash, then left and got into a fight with another group in the parking lot that ended in a barrage of gunfire that wounded a security guard.
They also forgot about the picture a photographer had just taken inside.
This morning, Prince George’s police detectives began flashing around that color, digital photo — one of the clearest they say they’ve ever had of suspects in a major shooting — hoping someone will recognize one or more of the three.
And that’s only half the story of the shooting.
County police are also investigating the decision by a county police officer working security at the club — which is owned by the family of former state senator Tommie Broadwater Jr. — to fire at the suspects as they peeled out of the club’s parking lot in the 5300 block of Sheriff Road in Forestville shortly after 2 a.m.
The off-duty officer appears to have fired through the rear window of the suspects’ champagne-colored Cadillac before they eluded police on a short chase into the District.
“The officer was able to get one shot off at them,” said Officer Evan Baxter, a police spokesman. “We’re not positive that it was his shot that took out the rear windshield, but we’re pretty sure that was the chain of events.”
Police are trained to shoot when they perceive a deadly threat, and they have fired several times in Prince George’s in the past year when suspects drove at them. But police said it appeared the suspects were driving away and it was unclear whether the suspects were still firing, or how far from the scene they had driven when the officer opened fire.
Baxter said the officer, whom the department has not yet identified, was outside his vehicle “firing in response” to the security guard being hit. The security guard was struck in the leg, possibly by a stray bullet, and is expected to recover, Baxter said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the identity of the vehicle or the three men in the photograph to call Prince George’s police at 301-772-4910. Anonymous tips can also be left by calling the county’s Crime Solvers hotline at 866-411-TIPS, or by texting “PGPD” plus a message to CRIMES (274637).

Man jailed for the 153rd time www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

PORTSMOUTH NH June 2 2009 — Paul Baldwin was arrested for the 153rd time Sunday, a week after he completed a one-year jail sentence for stealing a $1.99 can of beer.
Arraigned June 1 by video from the Rockingham County House of Corrections, Baldwin, 49, with no fixed address, was charged with a class A misdemeanor count of simple assault alleging he hit someone in the face in Market Square. He told the court he didn’t want a lawyer and was prepared to plead guilty, but prosecutor Rena DiLando said her office has not had time to contact the alleged victim for input.
DiLando petitioned the court for $5,000 cash bail, noting that Baldwin’s criminal history is so lengthy she didn’t have time to read it all. She said he was also cited twice for violation-level offenses during his first week out of jail, once for a trespassing on the railroad tracks and another time for having an open container of beer.
Baldwin told Judge Sawako Gardner he went to the district court last week to apologize to her for a remark he made during an arraignment a year ago.
“I don’t need a lawyer,” he told the judge in May of 2008. “I’ve been in this court more than you have.”
Baldwin said Monday he shouldn’t have made the comment, adding, “I think I was intoxicated.”
“All I need is help with the drinking, your honor,” he said, while reporting that he attended AA meetings regularly during his year in the county jail.
The judge set bail at $1,500 cash and $2,000 personal recognizance and ordered him to have no contact with the alleged assault victim. If he is able to post bail, he is also court-ordered to observe a 7 p.m. curfew.
Baldwin also expressed his intent to plead guilty to the pair of violations, carrying a total of $450 in fines. He was scheduled to return to the court on June 16 to address all three matters.
Baldwin wore a surgical mask during his arraignment due to a respiratory illness which has not yet been diagnosed, according to a jail spokesman.
Last May he was described in the district court as “a leech on the resources of this community” after he was caught stealing a can of beer from the Islington Street Mobil On The Run. Former prosecutor Corey MacDonald said Baldwin is “a leech” and cited his criminal history as including eight trespass notices, 75 citations, four Social Security aliases and convictions for thefts, receiving stolen property, arson and criminal mischief.
“We deal with Paul Baldwin more than anyone else,” he said

Security agent run over during shoplifters escape www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

Seattles WA June 2 2009
A store security guard escaped serious injury last night when he was struck by a car driven by a suspected shoplifter, according to Seattle police.
At 8 p.m., the guard at a business in the 1400 block of Northwest Market Street saw a man shoplifting and followed him out of the store, according to a police account. The guard tried to talk him, but was ignored. The security guard then put his hand on the shoplifter’s arm to get him to stop and the man responded by punching the guard in the stomach.
The shoplifter walked to his car, a light blue Honda Civic. The security guard managed to take the man’s keys out of the ignition, as a witness saw what was happening and tried to block the shoplifter’s car with his own vehicle. The shoplifter somehow managed to start his car and struck the car driven by the witness and also hit the guard.
The security guard told police that he was “not feeling very well,” but declined medical attention. The shoplifter got away, but left behind the items he tried to steal. The police account did not name the business.

Albertson’s employee accused of stealing thousands www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

Great Falls MT June 2 2009
A former Albertsons employee is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the company while she worked there.
A 57-year-old Connie Barker faces a felony theft by embezzlement charge. Court documents indicate Barker stole approximately $3,000 from the Westside Albertsons, where she worked.
Police say between June 2008 and January 2009, Barker used coupons to take money from the cash registers. According to court records, Barker told police she used the money to buy herself items, and also to buy gifts for store personnel, to build morale.
Barker apparently told police she thought it was acceptable to do this, because she had worked for Albertsons for 38 years and had worked hard for better things.

Security shoots armed man at Aldi store www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

Chicago IL June 2 2009
Chicago police are investigating the shooting of a customer by a security guard this morning at a South Side grocery store.
Police said a 46-year-old man was shot about 10:05 a.m. in a parking lot outside of the Aldi store at 6621 S. Cottage Grove Ave.
The gunman, who was leaving the store carrying a bag of groceries he had already paid for, produced a handgun as he walked out and held it to the guard’s head “for no apparent reason,” Chicago Police Sgt. John Pellegrini said.
After a brief struggle, the gunman began to leave, then turned and again pointed his gun at the guard, Pellegrini said. The security guard then shot the man, who was subsequently transported to Stroger Hospital in stable condition with two gunshot wounds to his leg.
“He (the guard) didn’t know the guy from Adam and this wasn’t a robbery so we don’t know why he did it,” said Pellegrini. “He might have been mentally unstable.”
Police said the man may be homeless and credited the guard.
“The security guard did a great job,” Pellegrini said.

750 pound woman “towed” to morgue www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS IN June 2 2009– A 750-pound woman who died in her bed was covered with a carpet and pulled out of her apartment on the mattress in view of neighbors, then hoisted onto a flatbed wrecker to be taken to the county morgue. Marion County Coroner Frank Lloyd Jr. says he’s investigating why a contractor with equipment capable of handling obese corpses was not used, and he has apologized to the family.
“It could have been handled in a better fashion, there’s no question about that,” he said Thursday.
Teresa Smith, 48, died Tuesday at her apartment, where she had been confined to bed because of her weight.
Lloyd said it wasn’t clear why coroner’s officials contacted a wrecker company to transport the corpse instead of using the regular body removal contractors who were at the scene. He said that the regular contractor is equipped to handle large corpses, and he was looking into why a different contractor hired more rarely was used.
You know how you hoist a car on a flatbed with a chain? That’s how they took her up there,” Smith’s boyfriend, David Johnson, told The Indianapolis Star.
Lloyd said that the carpet was the only suitable covering available but acknowledged it was not the best way to handle the situation given that Smith’s body was visible to some apartment dwellers in a small courtyard between buildings.
“We cannot control what neighbors do on balconies,” he said, adding that privacy was a key concern.
He said his office was considering purchasing a special cart for obese corpses

Security guard shoots-kills armed man www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

San Antonio TX June 2 2009
A security guard shot and killed an armed man outside an East Side bar Sunday morning, police said.
That incident might have prompted a retaliatory shooting that wounded the bar’s manager outside his home nearly three hours later.
The first incident happened about 2:55 a.m. in the 3700 block of East Commerce Street.
Wesley Ealim, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The security guard told police that he approached a man in the parking lot after hearing a disturbance near a car. The vehicle was linked to a previous disturbance with men armed with baseball bats, police said.
After telling the suspect to leave, the security guard noticed a gun in the man’s waistband, police said.
The guard pointed his own weapon at the suspect and ordered him to stop. Instead, the man moved toward the car while reaching for the gun in his waistband, according to a police report.
Fearing for his life, the security guard fired two rounds, striking the suspect in the pelvis and shoulder.
About 2 ½ hours later, the bar manager was standing outside his home when an unknown male suspect approached and fired a gun, striking the victim in his abdomen. The suspect fled, while the bar manager was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center and treated.
Police have not confirmed whether the two shootings are related.
“Until we get more information, we’ll have to treat these as two separate incidents,” said Officer Joe Rios, a San Antonio Police Department spokesman.

Teens charged with robbery after alcohol thefts www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

Anderson CA June 2 2009
Two young men were arrested Sunday night, accused of stealing alcohol from the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Anderson and then fighting with security guards who tried to detain them for shoplifting, Anderson police said today.
With a bottle of booze in hand, Jacob Steiner, 18, of Redding had attempted to leave the store, but was caught by security guards, police said, noting that security footage showed the alleged theft.
Steiner “immediately became combative” with the guards, who called police around 10:15 p.m., police said.
During the scuffle, Steiner’s friend, Kevin Cole, 19, of Anderson came to his aid, police said.
Cole “pushed, punched and shoved” the guards, but was unable to free Steiner, police said. Cole fled, but Steiner was detained until police arrived, police said.
Cole wasn’t out of officers’ sights for very long.
Less than a half hour after the confrontation at Wal-Mart, police responded to a brawl at the Park Village Apartments on Bruce Street in Anderson, where between 10 and 15 people were fighting, police said.
Cole was one of the alleged brawlers, and he was arrested, police said.
Both men were booked into the Shasta County jail. Cole was held this morning in lieu of $100,000 on suspicion of criminal threats, robbery, battery and a probation violation; Steiner was held in lieu of $50,000 on suspicion of robbery.

NY teacher arrested during internet sex sting www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

ELMSFORD, N.Y.June 2 2009 – A Westchester County teacher has been placed on a jail suicide watch after being arrested in an Internet sex sting.

Cavaluzzi taught seventh-grade social studies in Pelham. He previously coached lacrosse in Pleasantville, N.Y., and Ridgefield, Conn. He also has worked in New York City schools.

Pelham Superintendent Dennis Lauro says police found no students at risk.

Prison guard shoots tires of reckless driver www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

CANTON IL June 2 2009
The Illinois River Correctional Center in Canton is under lockdown after an officer shot a woman’s car tire Friday night for allegedly driving at high speeds through the parking lot and toward an officer.
Kelly A. Mainard, 47, of Genoa in DeKalb County was being held Monday in the Fulton County Jail in Lewistown on $10,000 bond on charges of aggravated assault to a correction officer and reckless driving.
“The officer did fire a shot at her tires” with a shotgun, according to Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Derek Schnapp.
Mainard allegedly drove her car at high speeds through the parking lot at about 6:30 p.m. Friday but left before guards could detain her.
Mainard returned to the parking lot at about 8:30 p.m. and began to drive erratically at high speeds, at one point driving toward a correction officer, Schnapp said.
That’s when an officer fired a single shot at Mainard’s tires.
“Eventually, she did stop,” Schnapp said.
No one was injured, and Mainard was driving alone, he added.
The medium-security prison remained under lockdown Monday. How long the lockdown would remain in effect was unknown, Schnapp said.
During a prison lockdown, inmates generally are kept in their cells, and visitation rights are suspended.
The Illinois State Police are investigating the incident.
Allen Mainard, 20, also of DeKalb County, is an inmate at the prison and is serving a three-year burglary sentence there.
Schnapp declined to say what, if any, relationship the two have, or if she was there to visit him.

Parolee charged in TJ Maxx robbery www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

GREENBURGH NY June 2 2009
lohud.com – A local man on parole for robbery was arrested over the weekend in connection with another robbery, police said, this time at a Hartsdale store.
Jahiem Pedrow, 31, was again in jail after he was charged with second-degree robbery and resisting arrest following a confrontation at T.J. Maxx on Central Avenue on Saturday.
Pedrow is accused of becoming physical with a security guard who accused him of shoplifting from the store, police said. He was found Sunday in the parking lot of the Greenburgh Shopping Center on Knollwood Road, police said, and fought with arresting officers.
He was arraigned in Greenburgh Town Court yesterday and held in the county jail without bail. He due in Town Court today.
Pedrow has been on parole since Dec. 12 after serving five years on a second-degree robbery conviction, according to the state Department of Correctional Services. He was in prison from 1998 to 2000 on a second-degree assault conviction.
Pedrow is the brother of Kenyatta Parks, who was fatally shot Aug. 12, 2007, in the driveway of 116 Manhattan Ave., less than a block from his parents’ apartent.
Pedrow was allowed to leave prison under heavy guard to attend the funeral.
The Parks shooting remains an active investigation, but has been stymied by a lack of cooperation from witnesses and an inability to question a “person of interest” who police say they believe was there when he was killed.

California emergency responder dies-line of duty www.privateofficer.com

Posted by privateofficernews on June 2, 2009

San Luis Obispo CA June 2 2009
A San Luis Obispo emergency responder who died in the line of duty is remembered Monday in his hometown of San Jose.
24-year-old Christopher Meadows was killed over Memorial Day weekend while volunteering with the San Luis Obispo County Search and Rescue Unit.
Investigators say Meadows was responding to a medical call at the Oceano Dunes when the ATV he was riding crashed. Meadows was killed instantly.
Monday, friends and family came together to pay tribute to his life and sacrifice.
At 24 years old, Christopher Meadows was just discovering all that he had to offer as a medic with San Luis Ambulance and as a search and rescue volunteer with the San Luis Obispo Search and Rescue Department.
“He was a part of the sheriff’s department family,” said San Luis Obispo County Undersheriff Steve Bolts.
Search and Rescue Coordinator Sergeant Mark Maki said, “As far as we are concerned, we were looking at him to be a part of our emergency response team down the road.”
Christopher’s life was cut short when he was killed while responding to a medical call at the Oceano Dunes over the busy Memorial Day weekend.
“Their contribution to the community and their bravery is something that we all feel,” Undersheriff Bolts said.
Christopher Meadows gave his life helping others. His death leaves his extended family of emergency responders with a heavy heart.
“This is the first search and rescue member in history to ever die in the line of duty,” Sergeant Maki said.
A life filled of promise remembered by hundreds.
“Christopher may no longer be with us, but he is not forgotten,” said Undersheriff Bolts.
Meadows is the first volunteer to die in the line of duty, and only the third department member to die while on the job.
