RUSTON LA June 5 2009 — A former Louisiana Tech University teacher and lecturer faces numerous charges of sex crimes involving juveniles.
Ralph Gabriel, 55, of Ruston, was arrested in October on five counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile and one count of computer-aided solicitation for sexual purposes stemming from an Internet sting operation by Kenner police detectives. His trial on those charges is scheduled for June 22, Kenner police Lt. Wayne Mcinnis said.
After Gabriel was released on bond and returned to Ruston, detectives searched the computer they seized when he was arrested and found numerous pornographic pictures of underage girls. Ruston police Lt. Curtis Hawkins said he did not know the locations or ages of the girls in the photos.
Prosecutors with the Lincoln district attorney’s office presented the pictures and facts of the case to a grand jury Wednesday. The panel indicted Gabriel on 17 counts of pornography involving a juvenile.
The 17 counts represent 17 different girls, Hawkins said. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Ruston police arrested Gabriel on Thursday and booked him into Lincoln Detention Center, where his bond was set at $250,000.
Gabriel was a continuing lecturer at Louisiana Tech whose contract was on a year-by-year basis. He had been teaching civil engineering courses at the Ruston school for less than two years when he was arrested in Kenner.
