PA. trooper killed in shoot-out www.privateofficer.com

Scranton PA June 8 2009
One trooper is dead and another remains hospitalized this morning following a shoot-out on Route 611 in the Poconos last night that also resulted in the death of the suspect, a man who had fled with his 9-year-old son in Nazareth.

Trooper Joshua D. Miller, 34, died of his injuries last night. He was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m. on arrival to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest via helicopter, according to the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office. Trooper Robert Lombardo, 35, remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition at Community Medical Center-Scranton.

Both troopers are members of Troop N and stationed at Swiftwater, which issued a news release about the shooting this morning. State police also are planning a news conference for later today.

The incident started last night around 7:45 p.m. in Nazareth when police received a report of a 31-year-old man with a gun violating a protection from abuse order. The man fled with his 9-year-old son. Nazareth police spotted the man’s vehicle and began a pursuit that ended about 40 miles and 50 minutes later on Route 611 in Coolbaugh Township, about a quarter mile north of Route 423 near the village of Tobyhanna.
Route 611 between Route 423 and Interstate 380 remains this morning while state police continue to investigate the shooting. The Monroe County Communications Center said the road is expected to remain closed until this afternoon.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police Chief Harry Lewis last night said he was preparing to go out on a DUI checkpoint around 8:30 p.m. when he received the report of an armed suspect being chased. Lewis said he joined the pursuit, which ended around 8:35 p.m. at police roadblock set up in an unpopulated area of Route 611.

The news release from state police said, “upon approach of the vehicle, gunfire was exchanged between the police and the actor,” who was described only has a 31-year-old white male. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His son was not injured.

State police said the investigation is continuing with assistance from the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, Monroe County Coroner’s Office, Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department and the Nazareth and Tatamy police departments.

The chase ended about 90 minutes after the end of the Pocono 500 race, which is about 15 miles from the site of the shooting. Lewis said he was at the race track in Tunkhannock Township preparing to go out on a sobriety checkpoint when he received the report of the chase.

Trooper Miller is the 92nd Pennsylvania State Police trooper to be killed in the line of duty since the organization was founded in 1905. The last trooper to be killed in the line of duty was Cpl. Joseph R. Pokorny Jr., who was shot to death during a traffic stop in Allegheny County in December 2005.

Trooper Miller worked in the patrol unit, and last year received “The Top Gun Award” from the Pennsylvania DUI Association based on a nomination from his superiors for demonstrating a commitment to DUI enforcement.
