Baltimore County MD. June 23 2009
Baltimore County police have arrested a man who they say exchanged gunfire Sunday night with a security officer during a robbery at an Arbutus food store.
Police are not releasing the man’s identity until he is formally charged. Several hours after the robbery, police spotted the man walking along Wilkens Avenue and arrested him. They said the man had been shot in the arm and the stomach and had wrapped a rubber band around his arm to prevent blood loss.
He was taken by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment. His condition was not available. Shortly before 7 p.m., police responded to Mars Super Market at the Maiden Choice Shopping Center in the 1000 block of Maiden Choice Lane, where they say the suspect and another man forced an employee to remove an undisclosed sum of money from a safe at gunpoint.
Police said one man was armed with a large-caliber handgun.
As the pair fled, the gunman and a security officer exchanged several rounds inside the store and outside before the suspect drove away from the scene in a car that may have been hit by a bullet fired by the security officer, police said. His accomplice fled on foot and remains at large. The security officer was not injured.

Pittsburg PA June 23 2009
Jefferson Regional Medical Center hosted a program to recognize three St. Moritz Security officers for their work in apprehending a robbery suspect at a credit union within the medical center.
Security officers Robert Yingling, of West Mifflin, and Byron Johnson and Joseph Webb, both of Clairton, received awards and recognition Friday afternoon at the James Bibro Pavilion.
“The events that happened on May 27 showed that these guys have a good handle on what their job is and that they took it to the next level,” said William Hindman, JRMC’s chief of security.
St. Moritz Security Systems provides security officers for the medical center.
Jefferson Hills police Chief Martin Reagan called it a proud event for the security officers, noting that many officers around the region have lost their lives in the line of duty in the past year.
“By doing what they did and acting in the professional manner that they’ve been trained to do, they not only kept themselves safe, but they ended a situation that could have brought harm to others,” he said.
Reagan also read a commendation letter from Jefferson Hills Mayor Michael Green, who was unable to attend the ceremony due to work commitments.
“As a result of excellent interdepartmental communications and the swift response of your guards, a potentially dangerous situation was quickly and safely brought to a conclusion,” the mayor wrote.
Reagan presented the three officers and St. Moritz security supervisor Hope Pennington with certificates of appreciation.
Bob Frank, JRMC’s executive vice president and CEO, presented the three officers each with gift cards purchased by JRMC, St. Moritz and USX Federal Credit Union.

FORT DUCHESNE, Uintah County UT June 23 2009 — A security guard for the Ute Tribe’s housing department has been charged in U.S. District Court with sexually assaulting a woman on two occasions — once at gunpoint.
Roger Uinta Reed, 31, is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse while within Indian country.
According to a federal complaint, Reed met his alleged victim while investigating a vandalism complaint in May at the home of one of her relatives. The woman told authorities that after the initial meeting, Reed began following her around and would drive by her house several times a day. He also asked her on a date, she said, but was turned down.
“Reed would ask (the woman) personal questions and knew information about (her) family,” the complaint states.
The woman told investigators she was leaving a family member’s home on June 10 at about 9 p.m. and encountered Reed outside the residence. She said she tried to re-enter the home, but Reed stopped her, dragged her behind the home, forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.
The woman was able to break free and run home, the complaint states. She did not report the alleged assault.
Reed is accused of sexually assaulting the woman again on June 13. The complaint states that the alleged assault took place in the woman’s home while her boyfriend slept on the couch and her children played in another room.
The woman told authorities she encountered Reed as she walked down a hallway toward her kitchen. He had a handgun, she said, and pointed it her head.
“Reed began to tell (the victim) that it would be a shame if her children got hurt,” the complaint states. “Reed then told her not to yell and threw her to the ground.”
The woman said Reed began to sexually assault her and she tried to fight him off. She said she stopped fighting after he told her “a sleeping person would make an easy target, referring to her boyfriend asleep in the other room,” the complaint states.
The woman reported the second incident to her boyfriend the following day, according to investigators. Her children told authorities they saw Reed enter the home through an open door on the night of the alleged assault.
On Friday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Samuel Alba ordered Reed to be held in federal custody pending trial. His next court date has not yet been scheduled. He faces up to life in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count if convicted.

HENRY COUNTY, Ga.June 23 2009 — A Henry County elementary school principal went from his school to jail Monday.
Henry County police arrested Jason Douglas at Walnut Creek Elementary on a probation violation stemming from a pending drunk driving case.
The sign at the school Monday said it all – “Welcome Mr. Jason Douglas…Our New Principal.”
Henry County schools said he was promoted to principal June 3. A spokesperson said the district did not know about his run-ins with the law.
Walnut Creek Elementary School went without its new principal Monday after police arrested him on an alleged probation violation.
According to an arrest report from two years ago, Henry County police arrested Douglas for drunk driving. The report said he blew a .149 – nearly twice the legal limit – at 2 a.m. June 30, 2007.
The officer also reported finding a small bag of marijuana in Douglas’ car. Police charge that the arrest in 2007 was a violation of Douglas’ probation. Douglas was on probation for a 2004 domestic dispute incident.
A Henry County Schools spokesperson said the district hired Douglas as a teacher in July 2003. They did a criminal background check then. The spokesperson also said the district does background checks every five years – which means the district would have done another in 2008.
The spokesperson said she couldn’t talk about why the district didn’t know about Douglas’ history because the district is still investigating.

BURNS HARBOR IN June 23 2009 A steel mill security officer has asked the FBI and Porter County police to look further into a June 3 altercation between him and a Burns Harbor police officer.
In addition, The Times has obtained a video showing the run-in between the Burns Harbor police officer and the security officer during a traffic stop on ArcelorMittal property in Burns Harbor.
The video — which is available for viewing at http://www.nwi.com — was captured by a mill security camera.
The mill security officer, Capt. Darren Smith, said in an interview shortly after the incident that witness statements and video support his assertion that Burns Harbor Officer Karimi yelled at him, forced him up against a car with his hands behind his back and threatened him with arrest.
Smith, who is black, is taking legal action against Karimi, who is of Middle Eastern descent.
Smith’s attorney, Trent McCain, of Merrillville, said he has written a letter to the FBI in Merrillville asking the agency to launch a civil rights investigation into Karimi and Burns Harbor. The attorney also said he is asking Porter County police to seek battery charges against Karimi.
Smith said he followed procedure and approached Karimi for information because Karimi’s traffic stop spilled onto mill property.
Smith said Karimi did not ask him to wait for the information but rather jumped out of his squad car, threatened to arrest Smith and slammed him against the car. Smith reported suffering shoulder pain from having his arms forced behind his back.
Burns Harbor Police Chief Jerry Price was not available to comment about the video. But in an earlier interview, Price said the mill security officer was interfering with a traffic stop that began on U.S. 12 and ended on the driveway leading to the mill’s east gate.
Karimi stopped a vehicle shortly before 11 p.m. June 3, Price said. Karimi reported that the security officer approached in an aggressive manner and requested information about the traffic stop, Price said.
Price said his police officers can’t allow anyone to interfere with traffic stops, which often spill onto driveways, parking lots and other private property. Karimi did threaten to arrest the security officer, but the security officer agreed to walk away, and no arrest was made, Price said.

Charleston SC June 23 2009
A security guard at a Savannah Highway nightclub fired three shots at a suspect’s car after it struck another security guard and several parked cars early Sunday.
Charleston County sheriff’s deputies said the suspect was in handcuffs when they arrived about 2 a.m at Peter Miller’s Nightclub at 4213 Savannah Highway.
Deputies arrested and charged Lawrence Devon Green, 27, of Adams Run with three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill.
Three men and one woman, all certified as armed security through the State Law Enforcement Division, told deputies the incident began when a man who had been told to leave the club shouted obscenities at one of them, left the property briefly in his white Cadillac DeVille and then drove back onto the property.
One of the security guards told the suspect to park his vehicle. Instead the suspect hit the gas, nearly hitting a security guard. Another security guard sprayed pepper spray through an open window, causing the driver to stop the car. The suspect then rammed a parked vehicle, according to an incident report.
The guards told deputies that a passenger inside the Cadillac jumped out of the vehicle and put his hands over his head. As a security guard attempted to handcuff the passenger, the driver of the vehicle hit the gas again. The security guard moved the passenger out of the way of the oncoming vehicle and was struck with the open car door, according to the report.
Thomas Lee Lightfoot, one of the security guards, fired a shot into the Cadillac’s radiator, according to the report. The driver hit the gas again, nearly striking the other guard again. The report says Lightfoot fired two more shots into the driver’s side of the car and the Cadillac slammed into two more parked cars.
The four security guards took Green into custody until deputies arrived.

Boston MA June 23 2009
Brian Hilario is accused of stealing more than $400 worth of merchandise with 25-year-old Michael Couto while Couto’s father waited in the parking lot.
Police say Couto’s father knew nothing of the robbery and thought he was just giving the men a ride to the grocery store.
However, when a security guard stopped Hilario and Couto as they were leaving the store, Hilario ran to the elder Couto’s car and jumped in, demanding that the man drive away. When the elder Couto saw Hilario was being chased by a security guard he refused to drive away and demanded to know what was going on.
Police say Hilario jumped out of the car, ran away, but returned when the elder Couto got out of the car to talk to the guard.
Hilario then stole the vehicle, nearly hitting the elder Couto, who was demanding Hilario get out of the car, police say.
Fairhaven police, who had been called to the store moments earlier, saw Hilario speeding onto Route 6 in the stolen car. They chased Hilario until he drove over a tire deflation device laid down by police further down Route 6.
Police say Hilario admitted that he and Couto shoplifted to get money to buy drugs.
He is charged with carjacking, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, failing to stop for police, motor vehicle larceny, larceny exceeding $250, resisting arrest and other motor vehicle charges.
Police determined Hilario was also wanted on five warrants for possession of heroin, larceny, shoplifting and other motor vehicle charges.
