Wanted fugitive steals car during shoplifting www.privateofficer.com
Brian Hilario is accused of stealing more than $400 worth of merchandise with 25-year-old Michael Couto while Couto’s father waited in the parking lot.
Police say Couto’s father knew nothing of the robbery and thought he was just giving the men a ride to the grocery store.
However, when a security guard stopped Hilario and Couto as they were leaving the store, Hilario ran to the elder Couto’s car and jumped in, demanding that the man drive away. When the elder Couto saw Hilario was being chased by a security guard he refused to drive away and demanded to know what was going on.
Police say Hilario jumped out of the car, ran away, but returned when the elder Couto got out of the car to talk to the guard.
Hilario then stole the vehicle, nearly hitting the elder Couto, who was demanding Hilario get out of the car, police say.
Fairhaven police, who had been called to the store moments earlier, saw Hilario speeding onto Route 6 in the stolen car. They chased Hilario until he drove over a tire deflation device laid down by police further down Route 6.
Police say Hilario admitted that he and Couto shoplifted to get money to buy drugs.
He is charged with carjacking, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, failing to stop for police, motor vehicle larceny, larceny exceeding $250, resisting arrest and other motor vehicle charges.
Police determined Hilario was also wanted on five warrants for possession of heroin, larceny, shoplifting and other motor vehicle charges.
