ANTIOCH CA July 3 2009 — Security guards subdued a 14-year-old boy following the armed robbery of a pizzeria Wednesday night, and investigators are exploring whether he is linked to a series of armed holdups over the past week, including one in which a taqueria owner was shot multiple times, police said.
Police were called about 11:15 p.m. to the Pizza Guys restaurant in the 1100 block of Sycamore Drive after employees reported being robbed at gunpoint by two males, police said.
Officers arrived to discover that two local security guards had caught one of the robbers by subduing him with pepper spray. While searching the area for evidence, officers found a loaded handgun along the suspects’ escape path, police said.
Investigators are determining whether the juvenile suspect is linked to armed robberies that occurred in Antioch and Pittsburg over the past week, including three reported on Wednesday morning, Sgt. Steve Bias said.
The first Wednesday robbery was reported about 1:20 a.m. at a Quik Stop store on West Tregallas Road, with the clerk reporting four juveniles as the robbers, police said. Around 2:40 a.m., a similarly described group robbed a 7-Eleven on Buchanan Road. In both cases, the robbers displayed a gray or silver handgun and a revolver. Between those incidents, police said a 7-Eleven in Pittsburg was robbed around 2:30 a.m., and investigators suspect it involved the same group of suspects.
In the Wednesday robberies, one suspect was described as a black male between 16 and 18 years old, between 5-feet-9 and 5-feet-11, with a slim build, and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black jeans. A second robber was described as a black male between 5-feet-7 and 5-feet-9, with a slim build, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans.
Two other robbers were vaguely described as wearing dark clothing, with one of them carrying a revolver.
Detectives also are exploring whether the arrested teen was connected to an armed robbery June 24 at Taqueria La Sierra, 901 H St., during which a 29-year-old man was shot several times, Bias said. The wounded man is expected to survive.
