Alert security officer aids police in capture of bank robber www.privateofficer.com

Minneapolis MN Aug 7 2009
A second suspect has been charged in the takeover bank robbery in Minneapolis on July 28.
Michael Deon Hughes, 23, faces first-degree aggravated robbery in connection to the holdup at the US Bank at 4930 34th Ave. S.
Hughes was arrested after a security guard at Block E spotted him over the weekend and notified police. Officers were able to apprehend Hughes after he boarded a Metro Transit bus.
Investigators believe Hughes and three other men are behind a series of robberies that have grown increasingly more violent—including two prior holdups of the same US Bank on April 13 and May 8.
Lt. Mike Fossum, commander of the Minneapolis Police Robbery Unit, says in each case, armed men entered the bank around closing time, ordered customers and employees to the ground and jumped the counter to collect cash.
In the most recent heist, Fossum said the crew of three robbers added a fourth man; used two rifles for the first time; and attacked a bank employee, punching a female clerk and knocking her to the ground. Two of the men covered their faces. All wore cotton or latex gloves so as to not leave any fingerprints, police said.
Police tracked down Curtis Devone Williams, 29, of Minneapolis, because the first of two get-away vehicles used in the July 28 robbery—a gray Mercury Sable—was registered to his address. Police found the Sable after a witness called police when she saw four men ditch the sedan and hop into a black Dodge Charger in the 2300 block of East 34th Street.
The two other suspects have not been arrested and the Dodge Charger has still not been located.
Williams has also been charged with aggravated robbery.
Anyone with information about the robbery or the Dodge Charger should call the Minneapolis Police Department’s Robbery Unit at (612) 673-2941.

Family questions why special police officer killed man www.privateofficer.com

WASHINGTON DC Aug 7 2009 – A grieving family is demanding answers after a special police officer shot and killed a man in D.C. last week.

The incident happened Friday night when a young man just released from jail argued and then fought with an apartment building security guard. The guard pulled his weapon and fired, killing the man.

The shooting drew little attention, but now the family of 31-year-old Michael Parker is demanding answers.

I can’t get no information. All people can tell me is that they’re sorry for my loss and you can go do this, this and that,” said Cheryl Parker, the victim’s mother. “I want answers. I want to know what really happened.”

Officially, police say the shooting is under investigation but sources tell ABC 7 News it’s likely no charges will be filed against the special police officer. They say Parker had caused trouble at the building before and was under orders to stay away after his release from jail.

As they plan a candlelight vigil Wednesday night, Parker’s loved ones say it all just seems wrong. “People do stuff every day but for him to just take somebody’s life like that — that wasn’t fair. We want justice served that’s just the bottom line,” said Melva Johnson, the victim’s cousin.

Police have not identified the security guard involved. Sources say he works for a private company

Fort Worth fire Lt. Kent Worley said the incident started with two people complaining about dizziness after a co-worker sprayed perfume. Others reported being sick when an announcement was made that anyone with similar symptoms should exit the building.

Armored car guard indicted for theft of deposit bag www.privateofficer.com

BLOUNTVILLE TN Aug 7 2009— A Kingsport armored truck employee has been indicted by a Sullivan County grand jury for allegedly stealing a deposit bag containing more than $11,000.
Jody Amis Pierce, 29, 1000 University Blvd., A-31, Kingsport, was indicted on a charge of theft of $10,000 or more.
According to court records, Pierce admitted he’d taken a bag of money from Wal-Mart’s deposit for April 13 after the truck turned off Highway 394 to Highway 11-W. The driver had no knowledge of what he’d done, Pierce said.
Pierce said he hid the bag in the armored truck then took the money he’d stolen and hid it in his shirt. After work, Pierce said he took the money to his own truck and drove home.
Pierce said he hadn’t even touched the money. When he returned it, it was still sealed inside a plastic envelope from Wal-Mart.
Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office Detective Marshall Crank investigated the theft after Joseph Grills, operations supervisor for Loomis Armored Car Service of Kingsport, reported he’d discovered $11,037.53 was missing from Wal-Mart’s deposit.
Grills said Pierce was supposed to pick up the deposit from Wal-Mart on Exit 7 in Bristol, Va., and deposit it at Bank of America on Eastman Road in Kingsport.
Bank of America staff had contacted Grills to let him know the amount of money deposited did not match up with the amount on the deposit slip.

Police search for missing TN deputy sheriff www.privateofficer.com

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. Aug 7 2009 — Police on Friday released the name of a missing Montgomery County reserve sheriff’s deputy but still have not located him.
Search crews were looking for William Hassell, a 10-year veteran reserve deputy, after his boat was found unattended on Thursday night, according to Sheriff’s spokesman Ted Denny.
It is believed the deputy went fishing in the Cumberland River at about 5 p.m. His boat was found with a warm engine at about 7 p.m
Hassell’s identification was found in the boat with a life vest.
Divers searched for the deputy for several hours Thursday night without success, and also dragged the river.
Crews suspended the search at 1:30 Friday morning, and resumed the search at 8 a.m. Friday. They are focusing along a stretch of the Cumberland River where search dogs picked up a scent.
Officials said the search has advanced from a rescue to a recovery mission.
Denny said recent heavy rains made the water murky and current strong, making the search more difficult.
Hassell’s family said he is diabetic and that may have contributed to his possible drowning. Hassell, the father of five children, is also a deacon at Greater Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksville.
He retired from the military a few years ago.

Hilton Head security nab employee for theft www.privateofficer.com

Hilton Head SC Aug 7 2009
When a resident of a Hilton Head Island retirement communityreported money missing from her home, security officers hatched a plan to try to catch the thief.
They planted five $20 bills in the woman’s purse, which they then left on her bed. They trained a video camera on the purse.
The trap was set.
And, the bait was apparently taken.
A 26-year-old employee of The Cypress was arrested last week after security officers caught her stealing the markedbills, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.
The woman, a Hilton Head resident who cleaned houses in the community, was fired from her job at The Cypress after the sting operation conducted July 31, according to the report. She was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center. She was released on her own recognizance the next day, according to the jail log.
Security guards hid a surveillance camera in a sofa in the victim’s master bedroom, according to the sheriff’s report. They recorded the serial numbers from five $20 bills and put the money in the purse. The victim had an additional $106 — the serial numbers of those bills also were recorded — in a wallet in the purse, the report said.
The victim called security officers when the suspect arrived to clean her home just after noon. About an hour later, she called security again to say she noticed $80 was missing from her purse and the suspect was still in her home, the report said.
When a sheriff’s deputy and officials from The Cypress arrived to confront the suspect, she pulled $164 from inside her shirt, according to the report. Though she said the cash was her own, it included four of the marked bills, the report said.
The video surveillance showed the suspect peering into the open purse on the bed before picking it up and leaving the room, according to the report. A minute later, she put the purse back on the bed, the report said.
The $80 from the sting operation was returned to the resident. Catherine Jenkins, executive director of The Cypress, could not be reached for comment on the sting Thursday.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in Hilton Head Municipal Court next month on a petit larceny charge, according to the report.
The victim said she had found money missing on separate occasions before the arrest.
Peter Kristian, general manager of Hilton Head Plantation, where The Cypress is located, said the retirement community has had some minor thefts recently. He said he didn’t know precisely how many.
“With housekeeping and meal services, they have a lot of employees in positions of trust,” he said. “It’s bad enough to do it (steal) from people in full control of their faculties. It’s beneath contempt to steal from the handicapped or elderly.”

Security guard charged with arson www.privateofficer.com

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. Aug 7 2009– A security guard is facing charges after he confessed to setting fire to an abandoned hospital that he was in charge of protecting.
Clarksville investigators said late Sunday night that someone used a brick to break through a door of the building on Madison Street. The person then set a series of small fires inside with lighter fluid.
Police on Wednesday arrested Thomas Sexton, 19, who was a security guard at the abandoned hospital. Sexton worked a night shift and was the first person to report the fires to police.
Sexton’s employment has been terminated by Integrity International Security after they hired him about a year ago. He has been charged with arson and filing a false police report.
Integrity International Security said it performs criminal background checks on all of its employees.
Company representatives and police said Sexton had a clean record before the incident.
