Security officer survives shooting because of body armor www.privateofficer.com

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Aug 12 2009 — A security guard was treated and released from Carolinas Medical Center after he was shot while patrolling a new school in northeastern Mecklenburg County.
Family members said Christopher Allen Waller, 24, of Guard One Protective Services, is doing remarkably well at his Rowan County home.
Waller told police he was making his rounds to check the outside of Stoney Creek Elementary School off Mallard Creek Road when he came across two men on the property just before 11 p.m. Tuesday.
He said the men began to drive off and one pulled out a gun and fired on him. The bullet struck Waller in the chest, but the guard was wearing body armor and the bullet lodged in the vest.
Family members credit the bulletproof vest for saving his life. They said it was given to him by his father.
Waller was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries from the gunshot.
Investigator said the two men may have been looking to break into the school.
Police released vague descriptions of the men and the car they are looking for. One of the men is a heavyset black man about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He had dreadlocks and was wearing dark clothing. The second black man was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. Investigators said they are looking for a red Honda Civic with a North Carolina tag that starts with TYP-9.
Stoney Creek is one of six new Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools set to open in two weeks.

Man guilty of groping Minnie Mouse www.privateofficer.com

Orlando Fla Aug 12 2009
A jury this morning found John William Moyer guilty of groping of a woman playing Minnie Mouse at Walt Disney World.

Moyer, 60, of Pennsylvania, was convicted of misdemeanor battery for the June incident this morning.

According to the sentence, Moyer has to write a letter of apology to the victim, Brittney Duncan McGoldrick. He also is under supervised probation for 180 days, must complete 50 hours of community service within four months, pay $1,000 in court costs and submit to a mental evaluation with treatment, if necessary.

During sentencing, Moyer’s adult son spoke on his behalf.

“He’s a good man,” Emory Moyer said. “He’s a nice guy.”

Later, Moyer spoke briefly to the judge.

“I am innocent, I am not guilty of the crimes that I’ve been charged with,” Moyer said.

Moyer has no criminal history and has never received a speeding ticket, he said. This was his first offense.

Walt Disney World spokeswoman Zoraya Suarez said she is checking with the company’s legal advisors before making a public comment about this morning’s ruling against Moyer.

McGoldrick told prosecutors at the Orange County Courthouse on Monday she had pushed Moyer away from her after the incident.

“My first reaction I just pushed him down. I was doing everything I could to get his hands off my breasts,” Duncan McGoldrick said.

Jurors began their deliberations Monday afternoon.

“We’re just hoping for the only fair and just verdict in this case, which is ‘not guilty’,” said Zahra S. Umansky, Moyer’s attorney.

Moyer had been booked into Orange County Jail on June 7 and was released on $1,000 bail.

Loss prevention agent injured detaining shoplifters www.privateofficer.com

FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. Aug 12 2009 — It was a close call for one Mid-Michigan loss prevention officer after a pair of alleged shoplifters nearly struck him with their getaway car Monday.
Michigan State Troopers told WNEM TV5 that a 24-year-old member of the Kohl’s loss prevention unit barely escaped injury when he attempted to apprehend two men who allegedly stole nearly $1,000 in goods from the department store on South Linden Road.
As troopers arrived on the scene, the suspects had already exited the store and were in a getaway car that was “accelerating directly” toward the loss prevention officer.
Troopers said they witnessed the store officer jump onto the vehicle’s hood to avoid being run over by the vehicle.
Police said when the supect’s vehicle sped away the officer was thrown off the car and into the ground but was not injured.
Troopers executed a PIT maneuver to stop the fleeing vehicle before a pursuit could begin, according to MSP.
The two suspects, a 24-year-old Flint man and a 23-year-old Grand Blanc, were taken into police custody.
Police said all of the stolen merchandise was recovered and returned.
The duo will likely be charged with theft and motor vehicle assault.

Drunk driver tried pulling over off-duty officer www.privateofficer.com

VANDERBURGH, IN Aug 12 2009 – An intoxicated motorist landed in jail Saturday night when he rolled up beside a car, flashed his wallet and told the other driver to pull over, according to police documents.
The only problem: The motorist, 43-year-old Cary W. Melton, is not a police officer and the driver of the other car was.
Melton was arrested on preliminary charges of impersonating a public servant, driving without a valid license and operating while intoxicated. He was released from the Vanderburgh County Jail today on a $750 cash bond.
According to an Indiana State Police probable cause affidavit, off-duty trooper Scott Qualls was in his personal vehicle stopped about at Fulton Avenue and the Lloyd Expressway when a white truck drove up beside him. It happened about 10:45 p.m.
The driver of the truck – later identified as Melton – “opened a wallet in the manner of trying to show an identification and told Trooper Qualls to pull over … in a manner appearing to be a public servant,” according to the affidavit.
Qualls pulled over but “the suspect yelled to him out of his vehicle and took off going north on Fulton Ave. while laughing,” the affidavit said.
Qualls called the Indiana State Police post and followed Melton as he turned onto Cedar Street and came to a dead-end. Melton initially backed up as though he was going to hit Qualls’ vehicle but the stopped it and got out, police said.
On-duty Evansville Police Department and Indiana State Police vehicles arrived a short time later.
According to the affidavit, Melton failed a field sobriety test and later registered a 0.16 blood-alcohol level, which is twice the legal limit for driving.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken employee was making the deposit about 11:22 p.m. at the Merchants Bank in the 1600 block of Freeview Southwest. He had opened his car door when a man pointed a gun at him and demanded the money, according to police Lt. Dan Muyres.

Brinks guard fires at robber www.privateofficer.com

Philadelphia PA Aug 12 2009
A Brinks truck driver taught a swift lesson to a knuckleheaded thief who grabbed a box of change yesterday in the Bella Vista section of South Philly.
Law-enforcement officials said the gun-toting crook tried to ambush the driver, who was about to make a delivery to the Conestoga Bank, at 10th and Catharine streets, shortly after 11:30 a.m.
The quick-thinking driver turned the tables on the bandit, however, when he pulled out his handgun and opened fire.
Investigators said the startled thief darted down 10th Street with his take: a box of change, some of which was left scattered on the ground.
It was unclear if the crook – described as a bearded, 5-foot-9 black man in his 20s, who wore a black-and-red cap and a dark long-sleeved shirt with a patch on the left shoulder – was injured.
Investigators said he fled in a burgundy-colored SUV, believed to be a Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Denali.
Tipsters can contact the FBI at 215-418-4000.

Man receives 32 years for armored car robbery www.privateofficer.com

Fairfax VA Aug 12 2009
fairfaxtimes.com

One of three armored-car robbers who were caught thanks to a quick-thinking security guard was sentenced Friday to 32 years in prison for his involvement in a string of armored-car robberies that occurred in Prince William and Fairfax counties.

Christopher Blakeney pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on May 13 to using a firearm in the course of two of three armed robberies and admitted to participating in all three.

Overall, Blakeney and his conspirators stole approximately $360,000, with each of the three robberies occurring when a Loomis armored-car employee was in the process of loading an ATM with money, according to documents.

Blakeney conspired with Carlic Brown and cousin Michael Blakeney to steal money from Loomis armored cars, documents state. The trio pointed firearms at Loomis employees, took bags full of money and fled the scenes.

The first robbery occurred on April 4, 2007, near a Wachovia ATM in Lorton, where a Loomis employee was robbed of approximately $80,000. The second occurred on Feb. 1, 2008, near a Navy Federal Credit Union ATM in Fairfax, and involved $120,000.

“I remember the guard telling me that he grabbed a robber’s gun and scuffled with him down to the ground,” said Detective Michael Boone of the Fairfax City Police. “Once he was down, he stayed down,” he said of the guard.

The third, involving $160,000, occurred on April 1, near a Bank of America ATM in Woodbridge. The three men, wearing all-black clothing and black-and-white masks that resembled skulls, again approached a Loomis employee who was refilling an ATM at the bank, according to court documents. All three were armed.

They stole $160,000, but in the bag of cash was a cell phone with GPS capability. The Loomis security guard had placed his cell phone under the cash prior to handing over the money.

Following its global positioning signal, police were able to trace the phone to a stolen Cadillac that then led police to the robbers. After their arrest, searches of the residences of Brown and Christopher Blakeney yielded two semi-automatic handguns, one shotgun and rubber skull masks, among other items, court documents said.

Michael Blakeney, 20, of New York was sentenced to seven years in prison July 17. Brown, 25, of Woodbridge will be sentenced Aug. 28. Christopher Blakeney’s attorney, William M. Gruel, was unavailable for comment.
