Rockford IL AUG 13 2009
As police continue their search, residents living near the crime scene are tightening up their security at home after a disturbing day.
From a game of Frisbee, to walking the dog, signs of a peaceful summer night return to this Rockford neighborhood after a big scare earlier in the day.
“I was on my way home and I turned into my subdivision and there were squads everywhere,” Kelly Whitham said.
Whitham first called her husband at work to find out about the commotion.
“He quick went online and told me there’d been an attempted robbery,” Whitham said.
An attempted robbery Tuesday morning at this Mulford Road Alpine Bank.
This man, seen in bank surveillance images, arrived on his bike when a bank security guard confronted him outside.
“Looks like the guard noticed the behavior, the covered face, approached him to see what he had and he just took off,” Rockford Deputy Chief Lori Sweeney said.
Authorities recovered the bike and a weapon they described like a shotgun. Then they canvassed the area by air and on foot, hitting nearby subdivisions, like Whitham’s.
“I checked my home, quick made sure the alarm was on, my 17-year- old son was out of the house and left,” Whitham said.
She took all of her kids to the park for awhile to escape the man hunt. Despite the quieter scene Tuesday evening, this mother isn’t letter her guard down on her kids.
“They’re not allowed in the front yard unless mom and dad are here, so they’ll be in the back yard for now,” Whitham said.
And she’ll watch out for the suspect too, after officers gave her a description.
“I talked to two officers who informed me what he looked like, so I’ll be keeping my eyes out,” Whitham said.
As for that description, the suspect is described as a light-skinned black man in his 20′s with a medium build.
He was last seen wearing a black hat and black clothing. If you have any information, call Rockford Police.
Nobody was hurt during the attempted robbery at the bank.
Rockford Police say the suspect’s behavior is similar to some other recent bank robberies, including one at the Amcore Bank on South Alpine. But they haven’t officially made any connections.
