Columbus GA Sept 8 2009
Two armed robbers exchanged gunfire with a security guard Saturday during a liquor store hold-up in Columbus, police said.
No one was hurt, but the robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and the store owner’s vehicle, which was found Monday.
Witnesses told police two men entered Lucky Package Store, 4475 Warm Springs Road, around 9 p.m. Saturday with handguns. They robbed the business as well as a customer inside, said Police Sgt. Frank Massa. They also stole the owner’s car keys.
While the robbers were in the store, word got out to people at the nightclub next door, Massa said. A Shanty Shack security guard and patron rushed to the store as the robbers were leaving and told them to halt.
Instead, the gunmen fired shots, which the security guard returned, police said. One of the gunmen then jumped into the store owner’s car and fled west on Warm Springs Road. He picked up his accomplice, who had started running down the street.
The vehicle was recovered Monday on Rodgers Drive, less than a mile from the liquor store.
The suspects are described as black, one with a dark complexion and the other light. One stands 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. The other is slender and stands 5 feet 4 inches tall. Both are between the ages of 17 and 23 and were wearing all black clothing.
Police are investigating. Call 706-653-3400 if you have information.
