A woman is suing retail giant Sears, Roebuck and Co. for more than $100,000 for allegedly failing to provide security when she was mugged in a store parking lot in Chicago.
Christine Granberry’s lawsuit claims that on Nov. 15, 2007, she drove to the Sears on 1334 E. 79th St. and parked her car in the store’s parking lot.
After she finished shopping, she returned to her car and was “knocked off her feet, violently slammed into the pavement and then repeatedly kicked by an assailant attempting to steal her purse,” the suit alleges.
The suit claims Granberry suffered “serious and permanent bodily injuries” and “extreme and prolonged physical pain” from the assault, and will continue to suffer for the rest of her life.
The suit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court on Friday, claims Sears Holdings Corp. and Sears, Roebuck and Co. are liable for failing to monitor or provide a security presence in the parking lot, failing to maintain working surveillance cameras in the lot and failing to come to her aid during the assault.
The suit seeks more than $100,000.
