MILLVILLE NJ Nov 11 2009– A one-time Millville teacher of the year was arrested Tuesday morning on a charge of child endangerment, police Chief Ed Grennon confirmed.
Lawrence Young, a chemistry teacher at Millville Senior High School, was released from Cumberland County Jail sometime Tuesday after posting $75,000 bail, according to the jail’s admission office.
“It’s an ongoing investigation,” Grennon said. “There may be more charges.”
The details of the alleged crime were not made public Tuesday and no official police report had been issued. It was not clear if the incident involved a student.
County Prosecutor Ronald J. Casella confirmed a continuing investigation, but declined further comment.
A telephone message left for Young at his residence was not returned Tuesday evening and calls to his cell phone went unanswered.
Young was named Millville Senior High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2008.
A school newsletter announcing Young’s win says he is a married father of at least two children. The newsletter, available on the district’s Web site, also mentions the Vineland resident is a youth pastor/director at First United Methodist Church in Vineland. The Rev. Jeanette Block said Tuesday she was familiar with Young, but was unaware of his arrest and had no comment on the matter.
Young was paid $50,071 last school year, according to the state Department of Education’s public records.
Young started his teaching career as a seventh- and eighth-grade science teacher at Sacred Heart, now Bishop Schad Regional Elementary School, according to Daily Journal archives and the Millville school newsletter.
Young also taught anatomy and physiology as an adjunct at Cumberland County College, according to the newsletter. College spokesman John Nichols could not immediately confirm Tuesday evening if Young is still teaching at the community college in Vineland.
Multiple messages left for Millville schools Superintendent Shelly Schneider were not returned Tuesday evening and school board members could not be reached for comment.
