Arriving police arrested Derrick L. Walters Jr., 19, of Akron, at 5:26 p.m. Monday outside Manor Care, 5005 Higbee Ave. NW, and charged him with robbery and obstructing official business.
Jail records said Walters had hidden numerous pieces of clothing in his pants at a nearby store and then left the store without paying for them.
The store’s loss prevention officer tried to stop him outside of Macy’s department store in the nearby Westfield-Belden Village mall when Walters and another person who was with him ran away, the jail records said. The other person with him was not identified, and jail records did not say whether that person was arrested.
The store security officer caught up to Walters behind the nursing home when Walters stopped and tried to fight him, the jail records said.
Walters is also accused of having given arresting officers a false name when they arrested him.
He remained in jail early Tuesday, held in lieu of $100,750 bond pending a hearing in Massillon Municipal Court.
