Police use Taser on unruly high school student www.privateofficer.com

Hamilton County TN Dec 1 2009 A student is shocked by a taser during school after a fight breaks out. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office tells us two students now face charges of disorderly conduct.

They say the punches started flying in between classes at Brainerd High School on Monday, and both students refused to stop.

That’s when the Sheriff’s Office says their resource officer was forced to use a taser. Our cameras were there as 18 year old Monterell Neal walked back into school, in cuffs.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office tells us Neal threw the first punch in between classes and a fight broke out with another student. While that’s not unusual at a high school, what came next was.

Hamilton County School Spokesperson Danielle Clark says, “We had 2 boys get into a fight and one wouldn’t stop when he was directed by an adult to do so, so the SRO stepped up and the student was tased.”

Clark says since the students wouldn’t stop, the resource officer was forced to use a taser. She tells us it’s only happened a few times in past few years. “Brainerd is still a safe and secure learning environment, but when a student refuses to stop for a law enforcement officer, it’s up to an officer if he and she chooses to tase them.”

As a precaution, an ambulance was called to Brainerd High. But, the Sheriff’s Office says the student refused treatment. The Department Spokesperson says their officer did everything right. Janice Atkinson explains, “I think attempted to break it up by trying to pull them apart and verbal commands, but they were so intent on fighting that they had to resort to this.”

Atkinson says both school resource officers and several school employees could not stop the fight, and this was the only way to end the brawl safely. “It would have to be a last resort to stop someone from being injured for them to use a taser.”

Again, one student involved is 18 and has been taken to the Hamilton County Jail, the other is a juvenile.

Both will face disorderly conduct charges. We’re told this fight was not gang related
