Teacher arrested for rape of student www.privateofficer.com
Michael Scaringe was a respected music teacher at Bay Point Middle School until 1995, when a 15-year-old female student accused him of molesting her in his office.
Scaringe was acquitted of that charge a year later. Now he faces similar charges in upstate New York.
Scaringe reportedly grew up in Saranac Lake and was hired as a youth center director in September.
A 13-year-old girl who frequents that youth center says the 61-year-old Scaringe raped her.
“He’s the director of the youth center in Saranac Lake, so he knows a lot of kids, and she was one of the kids that goes there,” explained New York State Police investigator James Monty.
Scaringe was arrested on Friday and charged with first-degree rape. Monty said investigators tried to move quickly on the case simply because of his position at the youth center.
He has reportedly also been working as a substitute teacher at a Catholic elementary school.
“We don’t want to expose any more kids if he has more access,” added Monty.
Investigators say the alleged rape happened before Christmas, but would not say more specifically when, or if it happened at the youth center.
