Security officer killed in crash www.privateofficer.com
Michael E. Owens, 35, of the 3600 block of South Compton Avenue, died this morning after being struck by a driver heading west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70.
Police said the two vehicles collided about 12:30 a.m. A man, 43, was driving a 2009 Nissan Murano that crashed head-on into a 2005 Dodge Neon driven by Owens near O’Fallon Park.
Police withheld the name of the driver heading the wrong direction. He was taken to a St. Louis hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
Owens died at the crash scene.
A police spokeswoman said investigators are working to determine whether alcohol factored into the crash and are awaiting results of toxicology tests, which could take weeks.
Owens was a security guard for Whelan Security and lived with his wife, Jessie Stueck-Owens, 29, and two roommates in St. Louis. He and his wife had been married about five years and had no children.
His wife declined an interview request.
A sister, Kari Owens, 33, of Belleville, said he was the second youngest of seven siblings. She said he was a smart and talented artist and a “great guy” who loved his family.
“He was so against drinking and driving.” Kari Owens said, crying. “He was one of the good ones. It shouldn’t have happened.”
One of his roommates, Erin DeMoulin, said Owens grew up in Belleville and had been active in an improvisational theater group in St. Louis for more than a decade.
DeMoulin said Owens was driving home from work when he crashed. She described him as a generous person, a hard worker and “practical jokester” who had a passion for playing games.
“He always had a smile,” she said. “He’d pretty much do anything for his friends.”

PRIVATE OFFICER NEWS
http://www.privateofficer.com/ Officers responding to a report of gunfire at a local nightclub at around 11:30pm found two people dead in the parking lot.
Police have identified the victims as Michael Montgomery, 38, of Coosada and James Poole, 17, of Montgomery.
Montgomery, who was head of security at the club, was shot once in the neck, said Maj. Huey Thornton, a Montgomery Police Department spokesman. Poole was shot at least once in the chest, Thornton added.
Police said that they are still investigating the shooting and are trying to determine if Poole was involved in the altercation that led up to the shootings, or if he was just a bystander, Thornton said.
According to conflicting witness statements, two groups of men got involved in an altercation near the front door of the business and it carried over into the parking lot.
“Several witnesses saw at least two subjects shooting at each other in the lot,” Thornton said. “Other witnesses saw the guard, Mr. Montgomery, shooting at the armed suspects. No one knew who the suspects were, but apparently when the suspects began shooting at each other, Mr. Montgomery engaged in a gun battle with them and was shot and killed along with Mr. Poole.”
During the investigation, patrol units were also dispatched to the Baptist Medical Center East where they found two more gunshot victims.
Officers at the hospital found a 20-year-old man shot in the left knee and a 30-year-old man shot multiple times in the back. The men drove themselves to the hospital from the club.
Police are working to determine if the injured men were part of the original altercation that led to the shootings, or if they were victims of the shootings, Thornton said.
Police will have to complete a study of ballistics evidence to determine how many shots were fired and what type of guns were used, he aded.
At this time, we know that a number of people had guns and were shooting and it appears the security officer tried to stop them and was killed a police spokesperson said.
This investigation has just begun and more details will be released later in the week an officer said.

Security officer shoots to defend store clerk www.privateofficer.com
Shortly after three o’clock Saturday morning officers responded to Jubilee Food Mart in the 3200 block of Highway 80 where they found a man shot in the left hip.
Jackson police spokesman Officer Roderick Holmes said three men were arguing inside the store when they went outside and were followed by the store clerk.
According to witnesses a fourth man joined the altercation.
That’s when investigators said a bystander inside the store went outside to help the store clerk and that’s when someone in the group pulled a gun and shot the man who came to the clerk’s aid.
A security guard, who was also inside the store, then went outside and fired in defense of the injured man according to poilice.
The four men then left in two separate vehicles, a light and dark colored sedan.
Police said later one man arrived at a Jackson hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.
The names of the injured have not been released.
Jackson police said both men’s injuries do not appear life threatening and are investigating further.

Bouncer charged with attempted murder www.privateofficer.com
Daily Commercial News– A man allegedly beaten with a pool cue Tuesday outside a restaurant by a bouncer and found on the street in a pool of his own blood is in stable condition.
Leesburg police Capt. Rob Hicks said Robert Hamer did not sustain any life threatening injuries in the alleged attack by the Steve’s Redhouse Restaurant and Pub employee.
But the attempted murder charges will stick on suspect Paul Lorenzo Cooper, 27, through Hamer’s recovery, Hicks said.
Cooper was booked into the Lake County jail early Wednesday morning and released on $5,000 bail in the afternoon.
A police investigative report states “Cooper committed the offense of attempted felony murder by knowingly and willing pursuing a person, while armed with a pool cue, a weapon likely to cause serious bodily injury or death.”
“The fact that a person doesn’t die during a beating doesn’t mean its not attempted murder,” Hicks said during an interview.
According to the police report as well as an arrest affidavit, Cooper told investigators that the incident started after an “intoxicated” Hamer got into an argument with a bartender at the West North Boulevard establishment.
Cooper said he escorted Hamer to the door and pushed him out — and Hamer punched him in the mouth. Cooper then went after Hamer with a pool cue, contending self-defense.
The pool cue broke, at which time a second male allegedly began beating Hamer.
Hicks said investigators are still trying to determine if another man was involved in the attack.
Police responded to the restaurant about 8:40 p.m. after receiving reports that two men were beating a person in a roadway.
The report adds that officers spotted Hamer in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 441 lying in “a pool of what appeared to be blood,” with Cooper and another unidentified male in the area – the latter two who were ordered to stand near the patrol car.
Vehicles apparently had swerved around a prone, “lifeless” and “appeared to be dead” Hamer. At least one car stopped in front of Hamer to shield him from being run over by traffic.
The report adds officers assisted Hamer to the side of the roadway. The victim sustained injuries to the face and head and what appeared to be defensive wounds on the back of his hands.
He was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center.
